Log in II Constructions Chapter 1: Definition I General definition of criticism The word “criticism” goes way back from the ancient Greek language, with “kritos” meaning judge, and kritikos meaning critic Then, the meaning of judgment made its way to Latin, forming “criticus” then to French (critique) and lastly made its appearance in the English language from the early 17th century under the name: criticism Particularly in English, criticism has split meanings It first appeared to be “a scholar analysis and balanced judgment”, then later turned into “an unfriendly assault” in many minds (1) However, according to reliable sources of contemporary language, criticism, in its truest form is: (noun) the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes; the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work (Oxford Languages) (1) The act of giving your opinion or judgment about the good or bad qualities of something or someone, especially books, films, etc (2) the act of expressing disapproval of somebody/something and opinions about their faults or bad qualities; a statement showing this disapproval or the work or activity of making fair, careful judgements about the good and bad qualities of somebody/something, especially books, music, etc (3) II Definition of constructive & destructive criticism Constructive criticism “People who avoid all criticism fail It’s destructive criticism we need to avoid, not criticism in all forms.” Tim Ferriss, Entrepreneur, investor, author and podcaster For the most part, when being related to the word “criticism”, people often see it in a negative light No one really enjoys feedback that suggests modifying your own self However, feedback from others is what pushes us forward, to improve ourselves in a particular area and to see things in a wider viewpoint As a result, the term “constructive criticism” exists to serve no other purpose than to be a sincere guidance, a mutual support that eventually leads someone to change for the better and reach their higher self, mentally or physically a By definition “constructive criticism” is “honest, genuine, well-meaning feedback that provides a critique of the strengths and weaknesses of something or someone” (4) b Components Under the view of a constructive criticism, the four components (5) of criticisms’ examination are perceived as: - Intention: A constructive criticism comes from a place of support and problem-solving, from someone who is close to you, someone with your interests at heart, willing to express their ideas to see you improve and develop in a certain field - Delivery: The manner of delivery should be subtle enough for recipients to take in the message A constructive criticism should be given at appropriate times, one-on-one or in a close group, while being delivered straightforwardly, respectfully and sincerely with a soothing tone and smart word choices - Action: Commonly, a solution being put out in order for the recipient to make a change toward an issue is a great indicator of constructive criticism - Person: A constructive criticism does not aim to attack any person’s self-worth Instead, its main focus is only on the present detail, the course of actions or the specific behavior of an individual that needs to be reconsidered by the receiver Therefore, it is crucial for any individual to recognize and be able to take in constructive criticism to see things in a bigger picture, to allow yourself to evolve in not just skills and knowledge, but also reaching emotional maturity Destructive criticism In total contrast, while both types of feedback point out our mistakes, flaws or potential improvements, destructive criticism should deserve full avoidance a By definition “destructive criticism” is “negative feedback that is often incorrect, unsolicited, or downright malicious and can undermine, harm, or even destroy someone’s work, reputation, self-esteem” (5) b Components Under the view of a destructive criticism, the four components of criticisms’ examination are recognized as: - Intention: Much different from the intention of caring and supporting, a destructive criticism can stem from prejudice, such as sexism, racism, etc…or formed by the giver’s own hatred, self insecurities, frustrations, negative emotions - Delivery: A destructive criticism is usually accompanied by a disrespectful manner to the receiver It could be the raise of voice, implied threat, or mocking body language The This is a preview Do you want full access? Log in Chapter 2: Repercussions of Destructive criticism There is no doubt that destructive criticism brings about various drawbacks to humans It does not only affect the emotions of those being criticized, this kind of criticism causes a lot of health problems as well Moreover, destructive criticism is a potential risk to connection between human beings as it creates arguments and pulls people away The following aspects are some of the major consequences of destructive criticism we have investigated I Negative emotions Sadness and anger These may be the very first feelings you experience when receiving a bad comment According to the questionnaire we have conducted earlier, 36% of young people going through criticism felt bad and disappointed, and 5% of those felt frustrated Criticism can appear anywhere, no matter if it is from families, friends, or social groups We feel sad for ourselves for not being evaluated deservingly, or we feel sad for the effort we have put in our work not being appreciated We can also feel frustrated because we did not push ourselves hard enough, or for the feedback not going deep enough to understand what we These experiences are different for every person, however, it is true that sadness and anger exist, and we have to deal with it Feeling of being Threatened One of the common feelings but receives little attention when we face destructive criticism is the feeling of being threatened Threats have existed ever since the beginning of human history There can be two reasons for why we feel threatened: First of all, being destructively criticized influences our awareness of ego People tend to avoid all negative comments given to their performance by creating a wall of positive comments This has been proved in Shopping for Confirmation: How Disconfirming Feedback Shapes Social Networks (Paul Green, Jr., Francesca Gino ,Bradley Staats, 2017) In this study, the authors noted that “these feedback processes are often ineffective because they represent threats to recipients’ positive self-concept” (6) People have awareness of their being, and they have the desire to express things in their own way Therefore, how ironic it is when some day, your opinions, your identity get judged by people This is why we tend to ignore these comments as we consider them threats to our mindset, and also to a factor demonstrated below Besides, negative comments are also considered by our body a threat to our survival When receiving negative feedback, our mind processes a reaction called the fight-or-flight response This happens when we are put into danger or stress, causing a series of signs such as dilated pupils, rapid heart rates, etc, which is beneficial in helping us make decisions in dangerous situations, such as facing predators, however, it is not suitable for situations like receiving this kind of criticism, as it may be overreacting and can be harmful for our health Stress Of all emotions we may go through, being stressful can be considered the most serious one Stress exists when we are put under pressure, and criticism unarguably brings a huge amount of pressure to us When someone is judged, they may experience a great deal of stress as their outcome is evaluated negatively and there is no support for the path they choose to follow Stress can result in physical, mental and behavioral failures You might have to endure headaches, muscle tension and fatigue, as well as anxiety and burnout In addition, controlling anger will become more difficult, use of tobacco and eating habits may also change Stress is a huge obstacle to many of us: youth, pioneers, artists, etc It hurts us from the inside and makes us neglect our health Thus, you may always be aware of what they think of you but not what you think of yourself, but you should never let those comments affect you II Effects on teamwork Weakening the unity Being a threat to our ego, destructive criticism brings along one more drawback When a person receives some harmful feedback from one of their peers, they have the intention of keeping their distance from those giving the feedback They tend to be around people who are supportive of their ideas and stay away from the opposite so as to protect their point of view A higher chance of arguments is also possible as now two people become defensive towards each other As a result, the state of unity of this team may not stay sustainable Weakening performance the team It is a common fact that unity is a key to efficiency However, destructive criticism attenuates this amazing factor to lead the team to the final goal A team in which members keep arguing and criticizing is not a perfect place to seed mind-blowing ideas As mentioned before, receiving a negative comment can make a team member anxious as well as lower their confidence As a result, there is little opportunity for a breakthrough to be brought into action due to fear of failure or judgement Damaging an ideal working environment Destructive criticism creates a toxic environment among peers Quoted from author Jennifer Herrity, where “When you have the opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback, it can help you feel valued in the workplace.” and “allows you to grow by getting This is a preview Do you want full access? Go Premium and unlock all 19 pages open, constructive feedback” (7) is a healthy working environment Destructive criticism is against this characteristic of an ideal teamwork place since it destroys the relationships of teammates and brings tensionAccess to the whole collective Moreover, it is extremely harmful to all documents to work in such a team for a long time, as you can be affected by physical and mental problems, such as fatigue and mental meltdown Get Unlimited Downloads III Creating a bad environment Improve your grades Among people in society Although it may seem rare to catch any sign of negative criticism in the outside world because it is rude and people often not have the courage to so, it is still possible to observe several actions of silent judgement Whenever someone dresses differently from other people, they have a high opportunity to receive “side eyes” from bypassers In our questionnaire, appearance and background consideredto two contents receiving the most Share yourare documents unlock amount of destructive criticism - respectively 79.3% and 69% of people joining the research Judging people only by their expression without any deep knowledge about their personality can create misunderstanding and lack of empathy, which is really crucial when it comes to connecting people There may be no word, but non-verbal criticism can create uncomfortable tension as well, and it makes distance among individuals in the whole community Upload Free Trial Get 30 days of free Premium On social platforms Everyday on social media, people are being harshly criticized for showing their identity Take the case of Taylor Swift for example In the year of 2016, she was booed and boycotted on almost every social channel because of edited footage and a wrong story made up by other shameful Already celebrities Many of the followers Premium? Log inturned their back on her, and the hashtag #TaylorSwiftisOverParty is a true nightmare Years later, although she has been proved blameless, the artist has decided to give up being active on her social channels like she used to She was hurt, but no one took any responsibility for that This is the reality of the modern world: people spit out things too easily but they not care about their words Hate spreads with an incredible speed on social platforms and so does it disappear Only by a wrong source of information, one person can be hated for no reason, and before their memories of the event instantly fade away, the bullies not even figure out they are the bullies The existence of social media has helped us keep connection, however, toxicity is growing so quickly Chapter 3: Repercussions of Constructive criticism Whether at work or in one’s personal life, having someone criticize with kindness will have a much more positive result As a matter of fact, effectiveness within an organization is measured by many factors which include feedback ratings of the team members Constructive criticism benefits everyone for the following reasons "In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport You must also be prepared to work hard and be willing to accept constructive criticism Without onehundred percent dedication, you won't be able to this " Willie Mays I The adviser Builds trust In every environment, constructive criticism is given to help people When properly administered, it will strengthen the employee-manager bond, friendship, etc… because it adds depth to the relationship. To exemplify, when employees know their boss cares enough to dole out advice in a respectful manner will make them feel valued This creates trust, because they know their manager has their best interests at heart and wants to help them become their best self Improve the ability of evaluation The adviser could develop their ability of evaluation and giving comments Giving constructive criticism is not always easy as it is turned into destructive criticism In order to this, people need to have a process of specifying, analyzing problems, choosing proper words, giving solutions, etc This course of actions provides them synthesis skills which allow them to give right constructive criticism Thus gaining further benefits: “We found that leaders in a supportive environment for feedback had much better performance improvement over time than those in the unsupportive feedback environment”, said Steelman, a professor of I/O psychology at the Florida Institute of Technology (12) II The receiver Promotes Growth To tell the truth, constructive criticism is designed to help people realize their full potential Rather than focusing on what they did wrong, this type of feedback offers advice on ways to improve performance next time Gaining a different perspective allows people to expand their horizons and become more well-rounded individuals This is because the more they get to know themselves, the more aware of what needs to be done correctly As a result, they are more likely to improve their weaknesses and strengths In contrast, they can not expect growth if they are never told to figure out where to improve Evaluates things from different angle Criticism results from conflicting thoughts from different parties about a particular subject When a person did or said something from his perspective, someone will find a way to constructively criticize his idea (or part of it) due to his or her different opinion The constructive criticism he gets presents another way which he had no idea about before Therefore, through the critique, that person can see something from a different perspective, thus increasing his knowledge (14) Identify trustworthy people As a matter of fact, not everyone is willing to spend time giving advice to someone that they not care about Therefore, when a person receives constructive criticism that means he receives caring and sincerity When the actions of giving constructive feedback are conducted on a daily basis, receivers are more likely to gather mental improvement as well as better performance in life According to our research, 81,4% of the participants are willing to give straightforward criticism to their close friends It can be concluded from this indicator that close friends are whom we can count on as they are bound to give sincere comments and support us III Both receiver and adviser Cultivates a trustworthy environment In an environment where people are able to share feedback and constructive criticism, everyone gains their own benefits Creating a transparent, collaborative atmosphere at work gives us all the opportunities to become better workers and people With feedback and input from our peers and managers we are able to learn and expand our horizons while creating trusting relationships with others Most importantly, an open environment like this allows us to be proactive and share our input without putting people's personal feelings in jeopardy (15) There is no perfect way to give someone a thoughtful comment Sometimes, misunderstanding can make a constructive comment turn into a destructive one, creating barriers between people In order to avoid the risk of misunderstanding, there are appropriate methods to instruct someone to give suitable comments, which will be mentioned in the next chapter 10 This is a preview Do you want full access? Go Premium and unlock all 19 pages Chapter 4: Method of creating and receiving constructive criticism Since sincere feedback is not always easy to speak and hear for both giver and Access Winstone to all documents receiver Through multiple experiments, found that people were far more likely to recall evaluative feedback—about something they have already completed—than Unlimited feedback on how they couldGet improve on a Downloads future task, also known as directive feedback.(16) Because of that, the way people create and receive constructive criticism is Improve your grades an art I The “art” of creating constructive criticism The role of empathy Upload When asked about the two methods, right-away strategy and sandwich strategies (first give a positive note, then Share give your your constructive documents criticism, to unlock and end with another positive comment.), which one is more popular, 35 people choose sandwich strategies, and 23 choose right-away The ones who often use right-away strategy are considered as leaders, or mentors; and the ones who are considered to use sandwich strategies are friends Free Trial One of the expert’s advice is that the criticism is using “I” statements It's a way to express opinion by focusing on the situation, rather than the person people are talking 30 days ofthink…” free Premium about “I” statements begin with Get “I feel…” or “I instead of “You said…” or “You did…” The results of our research are pretty positive when more than 70% use “I” statements to give feedback (17) In one point, giving positive feedback helps the listeners to evaluate the work that Premium? Log in about the side that they they've done well, and thenAlready can more easily accept the feedback should fix And for people who have low-self esteem, they don’t feel that their ego is hurt However, the indirectness in the way people give feedback can sometimes lead to confusion, especially at work; if adding too much praise in the process of giving feedback, it’s like an action of sugarcoating for the feedback that must be clear, and straight-forward And for the leaders higher in empathy are more at risk of decreasing the effectiveness of the criticism, and sometimes their words may be considered to inflate performance ratings That’s why leaders and mentors often give straight-forward feedback, and then give the receivers recognition in the end That’s the power of actionable feedback Following some research, study author Summer Bottini, PhD, BCBA-D, a postdoctoral psychology resident at the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta said that receivers cared more about the interpersonal abilities of the person giving the feedback than the 11 delivery method “People want input from someone who is genuine, engaging, kind, and clear,” said Bottini (12) Consistency is key When asked about the type of person that people are willing to give constructive criticism to, people answer they feel more comfortable when giving their feedback to family or close friends rather than partners at job, or acquaintance, or strangers The main reason is, they want to give feedback to people who really understand the good points in their feedback or because “If they are not close enough, I cannot say that If they are complete strangers, I am not ready to hurt them even just a little ” The fear of hurting other people’s feelings sometimes makes people hesitant to tell their true feelings “But the consequence is that supervisees don’t have an opportunity to respond to or learn from this input, and they often feel blindsided when they eventually receive evaluation.” said Falender, an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University and a clinical professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (12) Because of that, when people work as a team, even with the people we don’t know much about, it’s necessary to give feedback And the method which is recommended for these situations is to reflect the work with other work (not make a harsh comparison), so that the one who listens can learn from that Work environment: the environment where the receivers feel comfortable to ask for feedback and change When people look like they’re not accessible, the one who needs advice from them may hesitate to ask for feedback since they think it might bother the givers It’s important to show that you’re easy to approach and feel free to give criticism One more crucial factor is we not only show that we are willing to give but also receive feedback from them Winstone emphasizes to students that receiving a critique of their work is just the beginning of the process, not the end “There is often a power dynamic in which the professor or manager is seen as the gatekeeper and thus the feedback should not be questioned,” she said “But I urge my students to respond to my input and explain why they wrote something in a certain way, because I may have misunderstood or been biased.” (12) 12 II The “art” of receiving criticism In our research, we assume that there’s a machine which creates sincere comment prices of one penny per comment, and people have 100 pennies, so how much they want to buy? The results are abundant; some want to use all the money they have to buy, some want to use 100 to buy only just one worthiest comment But mostly people want to buy a few, or don’t buy anything since they want to use money to buy food and drink so that they’re happy Follow the results, we come up with: Not everyone is ready to take comments The reasons are simple: stubbornness, not wanting to change, following other people’s comments, just wanting to be themselves is enough That’s why the feedback when it comes to receivers also needs to be evaluated The factors included in the valuation process can be the people who give it, their attempts, and the facets they give comments Ignorance is also considered as a way to respond to a criticism; but understanding it well helps people to pick the worthy idea that they can follow Since not every constructive criticism comes in a gentle way; sometimes we can receive it in a straight way with no praise that makes it hard to consume In that situation, it’s important to take time to listen and think clearly about it Secondly, the mood when receiving feedback affects a lot of the action after it When being asked, people said they feel free to receive constructive criticism; however, when in a bad mood they don’t want to hear, or hear but save it for later use In a situation where leaders or mentors give comments, they don’t have much time to consider the real state of receivers, and might give feedback when their receivers-us in a bad mood And at those moments, people easily lose the valuable comments on their work The advice from experts is: continuously remind yourself that the feedback can help you improve, and link it with your role but not to yourself (17) 13 This is a preview Do you want full access? Log in and receive constructive criticism We divide into groups of age 18-28, 29-38, 40- 50 and more than 50 However, over 90% is from the age group 18 to 28 Because of that we know our research lacks answers from a higher age We also divide based on genders: male, female, others and there are 50.8% female, 47.5% male and the other We collected 59 answers and we are aware that because our form is quite long and includes the question that requires people to write their own stories so it couldn’t reach the KPI of 100 people like we have expected Logical link: The logical link is shown by the way we divided our research into three main parts and there's also three main points in our presentation: the repercussion of destructive 14 criticism, the repercussion of constructive criticism and also the method of both receiver and givers to have effective constructive criticisms The reason why we also include both version of English and Vietnamese in our research form is we know that some people want to read quickly by Vietnamese but also there are a lot of people sent us the answer of them in English is because there are stories that they don't want to tell in Vietnamese, but in English more because it can be less cringe and also easy to tell We receive a lot of answers in English and because of that we know our way is effective Difficulties and additional discussions: The difficulties are to reach people of the age that we aren’t in, like more than 20, more than 30 and older Because the elderly don't like using the Internet, or doing forms online At first we intend to print our form out and send it to our family members, our grandma grandpa to receive the answer from different ranges of age However, we didn't have much time to it so we canceled that plan The second difficulty is that we want to ask a lot but people don't want to answer all of them, especially the questions that require them to write instead of just only tick and rate However we also received a lot of high quality answers that participants were really open to share and we know a lot of stories and we can see that there are a lot of new points of view If we can go back, the first thing we would change is the way we divide participants into groups of age because almost 90% is from the age of 18-28 and turn out we should have divided into smaller groups like 18-20, 20-24, 24-28 The second thing is maybe we want to turn the plan of printing and spreading the research into reality 15 IV Conclusion After a long period of history, the definition of “criticism” has developed into many variations In modern times, criticism means giving comments on somebody or something Criticism includes four components, which are called intention, delivery, action and person, and is divided into types: constructive and destructive criticism While the former one means “honest, genuine, well-meaning feedback that provides a critique of the strengths and weaknesses of something or someone”, the latter one implies that “negative feedback that is often incorrect, unsolicited, or downright malicious and can undermine, harm, or even destroy someone’s work, reputation, self-esteem” Destructive criticism is a toxic type of action of giving feedback to someone, and it has a lot of detrimental impacts on people, on teams and also on the society There is no doubt that destructive criticism can hurt us emotionally as it is so raw and has no purpose of support Negative criticism is also a sabotage to unity and effectiveness in teamwork, and is the leading reason for growing toxicity in the society This is the most unwanted output of giving feedback to anyone as it is not helpful but extremely painful Repercussions of constructive criticism affect both adviser and receiver Specifically, the adviser could gain trust from others and improve evaluation skills, while the receiver could promote growth, evaluate things from different angles and identify trustworthy people Although constructive comments bring back an efficient working environment, it also has drawbacks if the adviser does not have effective ways in order to give proper comments It is agreeable that everytime we give feedback we try our best to not be offensive Although it can take hard work to so, giving out considerate comments have criteria to follow By putting empathy in our comments, not hesitating to point out one’s flaws ,creating a suitable environment to get people to ask, giving criticism is at remarkable ease It is, however, the cooperative attitude of recipients towards the criticism that plays the foremost role, thus, we should keep our minds open so as to advance ourselves and build a healthier community 16 This is a preview Do you want full access?
