Apply in the looking back lessons in Tieng Anh 10 - Due to limitation of time, only the students of 10A1, 10D1, 10D3, 10A3 were asked to participate in our study PART II: CONTENT Theoretical and practical background 1.1 Theoretical background 1.1.1 Definition of project based learning There are different definitions of project based learning offered in a number of materials by famous websites and researchers as follow + Pblwork.org: Project based learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real world and personally meaningful projects + Pblwork.org: Project based learning is a teaching method in which students get knowledge and skills by working for an extended period time to investigate and respond to an authentic engaging and complex question, problem or challenging + Miss Hong Dinh (Bie.org): Project based learning is a systematic teaching method that engages students in learning important knowledge and developing 21st century competencies through an extended student influenced inquiry process structured around complex authentic questions and carefully designed products and learning tasks 1.1.2 Benefits of project based learning + Engaging + Develop and apply language knowledge and skills in authentic context of a project + 21st century skills, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, problem solving, self- direction + Opportunities for meaningful input, output interaction, and feedback (SLA perspective) + Combines knowledge and skills + Flexible + Student centered + Easy to align with standards 1.1.3 Steps to conduct projects + Agree on the theme of project + Determine the ultimate outcome of project + Structure the project + Prepare students for language demands gather information + Prepare student to combine and analyze data + Prepare students for language and demands of final activity + Present the final product + Evaluate the product 1.1.4 Definition of awareness + Cambridge dictionary: Awareness is something that is exists or understanding of a situation or subject at the present time based on information or experience + Psychologist Shelly Buval and Robert Wicklund: Awareness is the state or ability to perceive to feel or to be conscious of events, objects, or sensory patterns 1.1.5 The importance of raising students’ awareness of life + Help students learn a lot of useful life skills + Motivate students to use English to express their ideas of life in various situations + Encourage students to get on well together in teams or groups to lead them to good things Thanks to raising their awareness of life, they will behave and recognize everything better in their life 1.2 Practical background Through our teaching, we have realized that our students are really excited about project based learning However, they don’t know how to use their language to design a project More often, they also have difficulties in representing a project effectively That is why we have made attempt to solve our students’problems By using this method in teaching, we not only introduce them kinds of abundant projects but also be able to raise students’ awareness of life That is why they are very eager to work Finding useful solutions is mainly duty of our experience Solutions To help students get accquainted to applying project based learning with the aims to raise students’ awareness of life, we have organized these following solutions in the classroom - Cartoon video project - Design recycling products project - Volunteer project - Dream school project - Performance project - Survey project 2.1 Cartoon video project In this part, students are asked to make a cartoon video relating to the topics of the lessons Students have to role play of different characters in their videos and they will have to use their voices to mime these characters Objective: to provide students with opportunities to develop their collabration skills Besides, this activity also urges students of their duties and responsibilities of their family and the environment Procedure: Step 1: Teacher puts students in to groups and have them to choose their group leaders Teacher asks them to assign tasks for each group member, making sure that all group members contribute their project work Step 2: Teacher tells students about the project requirements and shows them how to make a cartoon video (Students can use some popular apps such as vyond, animiz, cap cut…) Step 3: Teachers provides students deadline to complete their projects Step 4: Teacher invites two or three groups to give their presentations T encourages the rest of the class to ask questions at the end Step 5: Teacher gives students a checklist for peer and assessment Step 6: Teacher gives praise and feedback after each presentation Example 1: Unit 1: Family life Objectives: improve their technolgy skills by making family videos with the topic: helping with family chores Furthermore, this makes them be more aware of sharing household chores with their parents Teacher may give some suggestions before they make videos What you to help with family chores? How often you these household chores? project has a possitive impact on students’awareness of life Ten topics of global success book are so familiar to real life that they can affect thought and actions of students to live better To start with, after studying the first lessons, students can learn life skills and how to behave from their parents Morever, humans and the environment, protecting the 33 environment are such all the rage topics that they have good influences on students on protecting the environment Furthermore, students realise the importance of developing their traditional music and advertise their local tourist attractions through two lessons: Music and ecotourism In addition, benefits of volunteering activities are introduced in unit 4: Better for community Thanks to taking part in useful activities in the lessons, students gain life experiences, for example helping different people, going to different places and dealing with different situations Besides, students can have a good chance to create and discover useful products for learning In ventions and new ways to learn are two units which encourage students to design and look for meaningful message for their studying Last but not least, the topic Viet Nam and international organizations is one of memorable tittles in New Tieng Anh 10 It provides students with the amount of knowledge of various international organizations and helps them to understand more benefits since Viet Nam joined different international one In short, Tieng anh 10 have brought a great deal of strange new things to students to learn and discover On top of that, practical topics play a crucial role in raising students’awareness of life Findings and evaluation Having applied this teaching method to 10 graders in this year, we have carried out some surveys among students The results of our work are counted as the following bar charts 34 The chart illustrates the percentage of students who are keen on project method in classes, 10A1, 10D1, 10D3 and 10A3 before and after doing the experiments Overall, before doing experiments, the number of students show interest is low Meanwhile, there is a dramatical increase in students’love of project after applying this method Looking at the detail, only 41,46% of 10A1, 44,44% of 10D1, 26,08% of 10D3 and 15,91% of 10A3 showed their interest to this at first Then statastics showed different results: 10A1: 92,68%, 10D1: 93,33%, 10D3:73,91% and 10A3: 56,82% The graph compares the proportion of students having more essencial life skills in given classes before and after doing the experiment As can be seen clearly from the chart, after the experiment, the number of studens who learn more important lifeskills increasing considerally Many of them shared household chores with their parents, started with small practical actions to protect the environment, designed useful products for learning and introduced a wide range of traditional music and scenic spots to their friends The survey on the We use Microsoft excel 2013 to find the average score Valuable distance = (Maximum –Minimum) /4 = 4-1 /4 = 0.75 We have the following valuable distance: + 1.00 – 1.75: Not urgent + 1.76 – 2.51: A little urgent + 2.52 – 3.27: Urgent + 3.28 – 4.00: Very urgent + 1.00 – 1.75: Not feasible + 1.76 – 2.51: A little feasible + 2.52 – 3.27: Feasible + 3.28 – 4.00: Very feasible 4.2.1 The urgency of the survey on the urgency is 3.29 (very urgent) Meanwhile, all of solutions are valued from urgent to 36 very urgent There are four solutions valued very urgently The first solutions are volunteer and performance projects with score of means at 3.28, 3.29 and the second ones are dream school and design product project with score of means at 3.29, 3.49 In general, we can realize that some solutions feasible 3.31 Very feasible Average score From the above table, we can have some following feedbacks: Looking from an oral perspective, we realize the feasibility of the suggested solutions There are three among six solutions valued very feasibly The feasible solutions are research project with score of means at 3.32, dream school project with score of means at 3.36 and design product project with average score at 3.42 In general, these solutions have applied in Tan Ky high school in this school year which are very feasible They can be conducted on a large number of students from all levels 37 PART III: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION Conclusion In our study, we have applied project based learning to raise students’ awareness and have achieved some positive results + It helps our students improve these following points considerably: critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills + Students’ attitude to life has changed positively They have taken the responsibility for problems of life + Students have become more confident to express their ideas about different situations in life Obviously, this study has been real of help to our beloved students Suggestion In order to make our study more merits, it should be conducted for a large number students from all different levels participating Applying project based learning not only makes students eager to study English but also raise their awareness of life Last but not least, we would like to express our gratitude to our colleges and beloved students who help us without hesitation for us to complete this
