Safety and vehicle damage warnings
Throughout this manual, you will see safety and vehicle
dam-age warnings You must follow these warnings carefully to
avoid possible injury or damage
The types of warnings, what they look like, and how they are
used in this manual are explained as follows:
CAUTION This is a warning against anything which may cause
injury to people if the warning is ignored You are
informed about what you must or must not do in
order to reduce the risk of injury to yourself and
others.
NOTICE This is a warning against anything which may cause

is ignored You are informed about what you must or
must not do in order to avoid or reduce the risk of
damage to your vehicle and its equipment.
Trang 3Important information about your Toyota
Occupant restraint systems
Toyota encourages you and your family to take the time to
read Section 1−3 of this Owner’s Manual carefully In
terms of helping you understand how you can receive the
maximum benefit of the occupant restraint systems this
vehicle provides, Section 1−3 of this Owner’s Manual is
the most important Section for you and your family to
read
Section 1−3 describes the function and operation
concern-ing seats, seat belts, SRS airbags and child restraint
sys-tems of this vehicle and some potential hazards you
should be aware of These systems work together along
with the overall structure of this vehicle in order to provide
occupant restraint in the event of a crash The effect of
each system is enhanced when it is used properly and
together with other systems No single occupant restraint
system can, by itself, provide you or your family with the
equal level of restraint which these systems can provide
when used together That is why it is important for you and
your family to understand the purpose and proper use of
each of these systems and how they relate to each other
The purpose of all occupant restraint systems is to helpreduce the possibility of death or serious injury in theevent of a collision None of these systems, either individ-ually or together, can ensure that there is no injury in theevent of collision However, the more you know aboutthese systems and how to use them properly, the greateryour chances become of surviving an accident withoutdeath or serious injury
Seat belts provide the primary restraint to all occupants ofthe vehicle, and every occupant of the vehicle should wearseat belts properly at all times Children should always besecured in child restraint systems that are appropriate fortheir age and size SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)airbags are, as their names imply, designed to work with, and be supplemental to, seat belts and are not substitutesfor them SRS airbags can be very effective in reducingthe risk of head, chest and knee injuries by preventingcontact of the head, chest and knee with interior portions
of the vehicle
Trang 4In order to be effective, the SRS airbags must deploy with
tremendous speed The rapid deployment of the SRS
air-bags makes the SRS airair-bags themselves potential sources
of death or serious injury if an occupant is too close to an
airbag, or if an object or some part of his or her body has
been placed between the occupant and the airbag at the
time of deployment This is just one example of how the
instructions in Section 1−3 of this Owner’s Manual will help
ensure proper use of the occupant restraint systems, and
increase the safety they can provide to you and your
fami-ly in the event of an accident
Toyota recommends you to read the provisions in Section
1−3 carefully and refer to them as needed during your time
of ownership of this vehicle
Event data recorder
Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control tain aspects of your vehicle These computers assist indriving and maintaining optimal vehicle performance Be-sides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is asystem to record data in a crash or a near car crashevent This is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR).The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR In acrash or a near car crash event, this device may recordsome or all of the following information:
cer-Engine speed
Whether the brake pedal was applied or not
Vehicle speed
To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
Position of the transmission selector lever
Whether the driver and front passenger wore the seatbelts or not
Driver’s seat position
Front passenger’s occupant classification
Trang 5SRS airbag deployment data
SRS airbag system diagnostic data
If your vehicle is equipped with a vehicle stability control
(VSC) system, its Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may
con-tain another EDR There are a variety of driving situations
which include activating the VSC under which the VSC
EDR will record certain information The VSC EDR may
record some or all of the following information:
Behavior of the vehicle
Steering wheel angle
Vehicle speed
To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
To what extent the brake pedal was applied
To what extent the ECU controlled the condition of
the 4 wheels
Vehicle stability control system diagnostic data
The information above is intended to be used for the
purpose of improving vehicle safety performance Unlike
general data recorders, the EDR does not record sound
data such as conversation between passengers
Toyota will not disclose the data recorded in an EDR to athird party except when:
An agreement from the vehicle’s owner (or the ing company for a leased vehicle) is obtained
leas-Officially requested by the police or other authorities
Used as a defense for Toyota in a law suit
Ordered by the courtHowever, if necessary Toyota will:
Use the data for research on Toyota vehicle safetyperformance
Disclose the data to a third party for research poses without disclosing details of the vehicle owner, and only when it is deemed necessary
pur-Disclose summarized data cleared of vehicle cation information to a non−Toyota organization forresearch purposes

Type B
Your vehicle is supplied with two kinds
of keys.
1 Master keys (black)—
These keys work in every lock YourToyota dealer will need one of them tomake a new key with a built−in trans-ponder chip
Since the doors and trunk lid can belocked without a key, you should al-ways carry a spare master key in caseyou accidentally lock your keys insidethe vehicle
Type B only—This key is fitted with thewireless remote control transmitter Forinformation on use of the wireless re-mote control transmitter, see “Wirelessremote control” on page 20 in this Sec-tion
2 Sub key (gray)—
This key will not work in the glove box, trunk and the door located behind therear seat armrest (on some models)
To protect items locked in the trunk orglove box when using valet parking, leave the sub key with the attendant
A transponder chip for engine immobilizersystem has been placed in the head ofthe master and sub keys These chips areneeded to enable the system to functioncorrectly, so be careful not to lose thesekeys If you make your own duplicate key,you will not be able to cancel the system
or start the engine
Keys (with key cylinder−type
ignition switch)
Trang 27NOTICE When using a key containing a trans-
ponder chip, observe the following
precautions:
When starting the engine, do not
use the key with a key ring resting
on the key grip and do not press
the key ring against the key grip.
Otherwise the engine may not start,
or may stop soon after it starts.
When starting the engine, do not use the key with other transponder keys around (including keys of oth-
er vehicles) and do not press other key plates against the key grip.
Otherwise the engine may not start,
or may stop soon after it starts If this happens, remove the key once and then insert it again after remov- ing other transponder keys (includ- ing keys of other vehicles) from the ring or while gripping or covering them with your hand to start the engine.
Do not bend the key grip.
Trang 28Do not cover the key grip with any
material that cuts off
electromagnet-ic waves.
Do not knock the key hard against
other objects.
Do not leave the key exposed to
high temperatures for a long period,
such as on the dashboard and hood
under direct sunlight.
Do not put the key in water or
wash it in an ultrasonic washer.
Do not use the key with
electromag-netic materials KEY NUMBER PLATE
Your key number is shown on the plate.
Keep the plate in a safe place such as your wallet, not in the vehicle.
If you should lose your keys or if youneed additional keys, duplicates can bemade by a Toyota dealer using the keynumber
We recommend writing down the key ber and storing it in a safe place
num-The key consists of an electronic key and a mechanical key The mechanical key is for emergency use If the elec- tronic key does not operate, you can open the driver’s door using the me- chanical key.

or unlock all the doors and can openthe trunk by using the wireless remotecontrol function or entry function of thesmart key system
2 Mechanical keys—These keys can lock
or unlock the driver’s door, the glovebox and the door located behind therear seat armrest
Keys (with smart key system)
Trang 29Spare keys should not be left in the
cabin In the event that a spare key is
left in the cabin, the smart key system
will remain actuated even after the
doors have been locked Under these
circumstances, the trunk can be opened
even after the driver has exited and
locked the vehicle, increasing the
dan-ger of theft (Refer to “OPENING
TRUNK WITH SMART KEY SYSTEM” on
page 46 in this Section.)
To protect items locked in the trunk or the
glove box when using valet parking, leave
the electronic key with the attendant Keep
the mechanical key with you For details
about locking the trunk opener switch, see
“—Luggage security system” on page 47
in this Section
A transponder chip for engine immobilizer
system has been placed in the electronic
keys These chips are needed to enable
the system to function correctly, so be
careful not to lose these keys
CAUTION
People with implanted pacemakers
or cardiac defibrillators should keep away from the smart key system antennas, because the radio waves may affect the operation of such devices For the antenna locations see “ANTENNA LOCATION” on page
32 in this Section.
Users of any electrical medical vice other than implanted pacemak- ers and implanted cardiac defibrilla- tors should consult the manufactur-
de-er of the device for information about its operation under the influ- ence of radio waves Radio waves could have unexpected effects on the operation of such medical de- vices.
If necessary, the entry function can
be disabled See “DISABLING THE SMART KEY SYSTEM” on page 36
in this Section.
NOTICE When using a electronic key contain- ing a transponder chip, observe the following precautions:
Do not affix any material that cuts off electromagnetic waves (such as
a metal seal) on the electronic key.
