The effect of part-time employment on college student's academic performance was examined using a quantitative technique The average score of undergraduates at NTT University, the number of hours worked per day, the nature of the part-time employment, and the workload at work were the variables utilized to explore the perceived influence of part-time work on university students' academic performance The findings of the research indicate that part-time employment has a detrimental effect on students' cumulative GPAs A group of researchers asserts that students gain work skills and experience on the job It was also found that, in some cases, students with part-time jobs took longer to complete their degrees than other students The average score of undergraduates at NTT University, the number of hours worked per day, the nature of the part-time employment, and the workload at work were the variables utilized to explore the perceived influence of part-time work on Table 4.1: The purpose of working 16 CHAPTER INTRODUCTION Part-time employment after hours by university students, both domestic and foreign, has become a typical occurrence in recent years The press, agencies, and companies with an interest in it are drawn to this hot phenomenon Students who work part-time are becoming more prevalent every day As is commonplace, part-time employment has an impact on academic performance for NTT University students as well Some students engage in paid part-time work For example, they work as salespeople, office workers, marketers, and receptionists, and help with family businesses (Billet & Ovens, 2007) There are some reports that health is affected by part-time work and working hours longer than prescribed According to the New Zealand Government, it issued the relevant decree to impose restrictions on the working hours of students International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week under current standards Similarly, there is a report by the Head of College and University Counseling (Association of College and University Counseling, 1999) that some students taking part-time jobs to increase income can lead to psychological disorders This is extremely serious because many students today intend to get a part-time job The result of studying is a competition between those who work part-time and those who focus solely on studying Students working part-time are limited in terms of time when studying while working, so they will spend less time studying, so the learning efficiency will be reduced Additionally, it's likely that part-timers won't be able to complete their degrees on time, creating a variety of challenging circumstances like pressure from the classroom, the family, the workplace, and many other issues Regarding the effect of part-time employment on students' academic achievement, there are two schools of thought While one group of researchers asserts that giving students job experience and practical skills at work is beneficial, another group believes that spending too much time at work distracts students from their studies, contributing to poor academic performance in school The temporal balance between work and study will determine if part-time work has a favorable or negative effect on a student's academic achievement This article examines how part-time employment affects university students' academic performance, with a special emphasis on undergraduates at NTT University The study aims to investigate and analyze the effects of working part-time jobs for NTT University students in order to convince NTT University to grant scholarships to NTT University disciples who have had difficult circumstances but have achieved many achievements What effects part-time jobs have on students' performance? The research is mainly aimed at critical data as well as perceptions that part-time jobs can cause a host of other social complications This study provides a specific view of the issue and provides a summary of the information discussed in this project, thereby helping students to balance study and work through the management of time CHAPTER LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 Theoretical Framework Part-time employment, as defined by the International Labor Organization in (2003), is defined as having fewer hours worked per week than full-time employment If a worker regularly works less than 30 or 35 hours per week, they are considered parttime There are differences in working hours between nations when it comes to the duration of part-time employment Part-time employees in Australia in (2007) were those who worked fewer hours than their full-time counterparts within a certain industry, and the majority of the time worked was less than 32 hours per week In Canada (2007), the definition of a part-time employee is one who typically works less than 30 hours per week at their primary or only employment Nearly the same, working part-time is defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as working between and 34 hours per week In contrast to full-time workers, part-time workers might not be entitled to the same benefits For instance, part-time employees are not entitled to employee benefits, such as health insurance, in the United States as of (2009) From the definitions given above, it can be inferred that a student who works a part-time job throughout a semester and puts in fewer than 20 hours a week can be considered a student who is employed Even if the number of working hours varies, it is typical for students to work full-time during the semester break 2.2 Literature Review "Lifestyle and the knowledge of working are two of the greatest aspects students must acquire to participate in part-time jobs" (Carney, Mcneish, & McColl, 2005; Oi I & Morison, 2007) According to some national councils, part-time jobs probably have positive effects (National Commission on Youth, 1980) The sooner students approach the jobs, the more experience they have; they easily get used to working when they graduate by knowing their working habits Several studies suggest that interpersonal student relationships at work are the building blocks of relationships for working students (Greenberger, Steinberg, & Ruggiero, 1982) A good workplace, as well as highquality work, gives students interesting and positive experiences This can help students develop close relationships with colleagues (Mortimer & Shanahan, 1991) Indeed, it is not surprising that pupils that produce quality work experiences dispatch that a source of satisfaction is the workplace (Ford & Bosworth, 1995) In Western societies, it has been demonstrated that part-time employment has effects on student learning outcomes, but very few studies have been done on the impact of part-time employment on student social life In most previous studies, student employment was viewed as a life experience (Ford & Bosworth, 1995) In addition, most students work part-time because their families are unable to provide their youngsters financially (Curtis, 2007; Callender, 2008) In 2006, Humphrey said that one of the main factors that determines whether students choose part-time employment in Western cultures is the availability of family financial aid The 2003 white paper, The Future of Higher Education, observed that they know that students' lifestyle choices affect how much they spend, and we think it makes sense for students to work to pay for their expenses [2.2.6] Some UK and US studies inform us of the consequences of part-time jobs, which can affect a student’s performance badly According to UK studies, students are more likely to be absent from class and spend most of their time working (Smith & Taylor, 1999) In addition, students are less likely to participate in additional activities such as volunteering, sports, art, etc (D'Amico, 1984; Taylor & Smith, 1998; Warren, 2002) With all of those potential affections, students might miss their chance to experience those fascinating activities, which teach tons of helpful soft skills (Hope, 1990) It is hard for them to concentrate on the lesson due to exhaustion (Pickering & Watts, 2000), all of which have the potential to affect students’ performance The majority of studies indicate that working more than 15 hours a week as a secondary student hurts scholastic attainment (Stern, 1997) Such students perform worse academically, complete fewer assignments, are more likely to leave school early, and are less likely to enroll in a post-secondary program Students who work fewer hours experience a number of detrimental effects A 1995 study from Toronto found that students who worked These results are supported by the fact that those who worked more than 20 hours had a 16% dropout rate, and those who worked more than 20 hours had a 33% dropout rate Singh (1998) discovered that in a study that took socioeconomic background and past achievement into consideration, the more hours worked, the bigger the negative consequences for student progress Younger pupils who labor longer hours may have more severe impacts than older students (Barone, 1993) The responsibilities of both employment and school can be difficult to balance for many kids (Worley, 1995) An increase in the number of hours worked has been cited as one of the most influential elements in several studies showing that employment has a detrimental impact on student's academic progress (Watanabe, 2005) Figure 2: Percentage of students working and not working It is evident that young people are increasingly choosing to work part-time It has been linked to both student lives and their academic work while they are seated in class Recent research has indicated that students feel that part-time employment is actually required in the current economic climate Comparatively few students indicated that part-time employment is not required Students are doing part-time employment at a rising rate in Western nations, particularly the United States and Australia (Maarja Beerkens, 2011) It is quite challenging to locate a part-time employment that fits students' skills without interfering with their academics It is obvious that young people are selecting part-time employment more frequently It has been connected to both students' personal life and academic performance when they are in class According to recent study, students believe that, given the present economic situation, part-time employment is genuinely necessary Fewer students than you may expect said having a part-time job is not necessary Western countries, especially the United States and Australia, are seeing an increase in the number of students doing part-time jobs (Maarja Beerkens, 2011) It might be quite difficult to find a part-time job that suits students' talents and doesn't interfere with their studies In reality, many students choose working part-time rather than juggling their studies and jobs, which has a negative impact on their health and academic performance By precisely identifying the consequences of part-time job on students' academic outcomes, it is possible to advisestudiess this issue and offer suitable solutions for students to be well-equipped in both knowledge and abilities 10 Figure 3: Percentage of academic results of students working part-time The pie chart clearly demonstrates the learning outcomes, showing that more than half of the students are impacted when they work that is unrelated to their major Moreover, the proportion of students earning good marks is not very high (1.9%)for those majoring The majority of students get high marks and there are hardly any mediocre or poor pupils since some students still manage to reconcile work and school Working in the correct major generally has an impact on academic outcomes of students Academic performance is often better for pupils who work than for those who not, as they put in more effort and produce better outcomes other professional work, etc Students in college frequently work part-time jobs today Most students (85%) who responded to the topic question chose "To archive more skills and working experience" as their top priority The majority of Nguyen Tat Thanh University students majoring in English language studies select a part-time employment that is related to or near to their major in order to gain experience, increase their knowledge base, lay the groundwork for a more convenient career in the future, and enhance their 11 quality of life Some students must manage their own lives while living apart from their relatives, although the expense is minimal Their daily living costs, including those for accommodation, food, transportation, books, study supplies, and even tuition, are rising The majority of pupils come from impoverished rural backgrounds Support for students is still scarce due to the challenging economic climate Students are thus compelled to work part-time to pay for everyday living expenses and ease the burden on their families As a result, students frequently search for lucrative careers They frequently put in between 14 and 21 hours a week of part-time work, and some even go above 21 If they are unable to successfully manage their time, these part-time occupations will keep pupils occupied Due to this, students who work part-time not learn at the same rate as those who not Table (page 22) shows that the proportion of students with average academic ability is large (75.7%), while the proportion of students with good and above average abilities is low (22.4% and 1.9%) and the number of students with below average abilities is essentially nonexistent Figure 4: Percentage of academic results of students who not work part-time 12 The pie chart shows that students who not work part-time had greater academic achievement than those who do, with good and above average performance accounting for 53.5% and 1.8%, respectively, and average performance accounting for 43.9% This suggests that there may be a difference in the learning results between students who work part-time and those who not As may be seen from the research findings above, students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University who work part-time report that it has a significant influence on their academic performance Figure 5: Work hours during the week According to the graph, 20% of students work five to 10 hours each week Ten to fifteen hours a week are worked by 60% of students Ten percent of students work more than twenty hours each week A student may only work a maximum of 20 hours a week while they are in school, according to Vietnamese law Students who work more than 20 hours a week have less time for study, which could affect how well they succeed in school The survey also discovered that students work part-time for a variety of reasons, and that this has an impact on their academic performance First off, many families find it difficult to afford high university tuition fees, especially those of overseas students Students labor hard to earn money through part-time jobs 13 to relieve their parents' financial burden Second, a university education serves as a springboard for a future job In the actual world of employment, candidates with prior job experience are given precedence For overseas students for whom English is a second language, job searching is much more difficult It shows that the study's conclusions are in line with the body of knowledge in this area Table 0-1: The purpose of working The purpose of working The purpose of working Numbers Money (64%) Gain working experience (66%) Make new friends (32%) Make use of leisure time (52%) Get to know society and practice (48%) yourself According to Table 1, the majority of students work (66%) to obtain experience, followed by 64% to increase their discretionary money Combining these two groups, it appears that almost two thirds of students work part-time while they are in school to help parents with the cost of education and to become accustomed to a new work environment This image calls attention to the cost of exporting education to Asian nations, which includes the cost of tuition fees The purpose of the study was to determine if students are aware of the effects of part-time employment We also inquired about respondents' perceptions of the work's impact on their academic achievement We found that the majority of the respondents were aware that their occupations would prevent them from having adequate time for studies According to statistics, students who have part-time jobs reportedly feel worn out and lack study 14 time However, contemplating their profession after graduation, doing a part-time job while they are in school seems to be the only option for them to gain work experience and acquire the necessary abilities To successfully complete projects and exams in university courses, students need adequate time to fully understand complicated material Thus, managing time and striking a balance between job and study is a serious challenge for students CHAPTER CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION 5.1 Conclusion This research objective is to investigate the impact of the part-time job during study for students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University A survey was undertaken to collect data and it was evaluated that a part-time job is a statement and crucial thing for students, but it does not always offer benefits or difficulties However, part-time jobs have two sides, but the main side is still the negative side because in terms of learning, health, etc they nearly a huge direct impact For instance, part-time jobs cause students to be unable to graduate on time owning to subject debt or quitting school because they are able to manage the time spent working and studying Looking for part-time work to supplement their income, makes the students caught up in the cycles of making money is considered a trend for most students nowadays When the need to earn money is too great, the higher the intensity of work, the lower the quality of learning 5.2 Recommendation From the information and results after the study, we would like to make the 15
