Báo cáo môn Những kỹ thuật gia tăng giá trị thương hiệu The role of social media in higher education classes Nowhere is the prevalence of social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) more evident than at the university. As instructors seek to technology to mediate and enhance their lecture as well as foster active learning for students, social media is becoming more prominent in higher education settings. Many academics advocate for the intentional use of social media as a teaching tool. However, empirical data has been slow to back up the notion. The majority of current research on the usability and efficacy of social media in higher education focuses on selfreported data (e.g., surveys, questionnaires) and content analyses. This document evaluates the outcomes of empirical investigations and summarizes scholarly works. Some drawbacks are acknowledged, and new study directions are suggested.

UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC AND FINANCE  REPORT The role of social media in higher education classes Group: Team member: Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Mai - 185040085 Đinh Thị Linh Nhi - 185040922 Trần Thị Hoàng Anh - 185040777 Trần Lê Tường Vy - 185090043 Phạm Thị Mỹ Linh - 185040869 TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MƠN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU Abstract Nowhere is the prevalence of social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) more evident than at the university As instructors seek to technology to mediate and enhance their lecture as well as foster active learning for students, social media is becoming more prominent in higher education settings Many academics advocate for the intentional use of social media as a teaching tool However, empirical data has been slow to back up the notion The majority of current research on the usability and efficacy of social media in higher education focuses on self-reported data (e.g., surveys, questionnaires) and content analyses This document evaluates the outcomes of empirical investigations and summarizes scholarly works Some drawbacks are acknowledged, and new study directions are suggested Introduction The explosive expansion of social media and other Web 2.0 technologies has never been seen before (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010) As users create material, post images, select to "like," or play in a game, social media technology has become a crucial element of everyday life The pervasiveness of social media is never more evident than at universities, where the technology is redefining how students connect, cooperate, and study Even as today's college student encounters a range of classroom formats (i.e., "brick and mortar," "virtual," and "hybrid"), the use and effect of social media varies depending on context The idea that social media may be a useful tool for educational reasons has recently attracted attention, despite its widespread use as a personal or professional tool At the same time, this emerging field is attracting more research attention It's worth looking at social media's potential as a learning facilitator and enhancer As a result, this literature review will look at the topic, "What is the function of social media in the higher education classroom (real and virtual)?" as it is described in contemporary scholarship and investigated in empirical studies TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MƠN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU The review begins with a brief overview of the methods used to identify relevant articles in the literature review An operational definition of social media is provided, followed by an examination of the most prominent social networking sites' usage trends The review's following part focuses on what scholars have said should be the antecedents of educational social media use Next, the benefits and downsides of using social media in class are discussed The following is a list of the most popular social media applications and the research that has been done on them The review finishes with literaturebased or author-proposed recommendations for further study Methodology In September and October of 2012, a review of the literature was conducted I used Web of Science, EBSCOhost, and ERIC to conduct a systematic search of specialist data-base sources Google Scholar searches were also carried out Facebook, Higher Education, Social Media, Social Media in Education, MySpace, LinkedIn, Web 2.0, Social Networking, Social Networking Sites, and Blogs were among the search terms and phrases Additional articles were found utilizing the "snowball" strategy of utilising the most current works to identify relevant publications mentioned in them Because research article keywords aren't based on a standard list, it's very probable that part of the literature was overlooked Here's an interesting technique from a literature study on the same topic Conole & Alevizou (2010) employed social media (i.e., Cloudworks) to outsource to other academics, requesting their aggregate feedback in addition to the traditional review process Component 3.1 A sense of historical change and development 3.1.1 A sense of historical change Social media is a wide phrase that refers to a variety of technical platforms that promote cooperation and community (Joosten, 2012) While a precise definition appears to be problematic (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010), social media is frequently defined by example Recent depictions frequently feature applications such as social networking sites, blogs, wikis, multi-media platforms, virtual gaming worlds, and virtual social worlds (Barnes & TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MÔN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU Lescault, 2011; McEwan, 2012) Because of the ubiquity of SNSs such as Facebook and MySpace, as well as LinkedIn, social networking sites (SNSs) were chosen as the subject of this review to reduce the range SNSs are webbased services that allow users to build personal profiles, generate content, and exchange messages by interacting with other users in the system The phrases "social networking" and "online social networks" are interchangeable (boyd & Ellison, 2007) When referring to SNSs and other social media, some scholars prefer the more encompassing phrase Web 2.0 (Gruzd, Staves, & Wilk, 2011; Hemmi, Bayne, & Land, 2009; Kaplan & Haenline, 2010) The issue of defining social media is made more difficult by the fact that it is in continual flux SNSs change throughout time as developers add new or improved functionality to fulfill user demands Some social networks cater to certain specialized markets, therefore features may be tailored to specific consumers Match.com and eHarmony.com, for example, are dating-oriented social networking sites (and were not included in this review) Users may construct their own social networks on Ning A quick summary of Facebook's functional- ity encapsulates the majority of SNSs' present features Users may exchange messages, add friends, update personal profiles, join groups, create apps, host content, and learn about other users through their online accounts on Facebook (Haase, 2010) 3.1.2 Development of social media • Facebook Facebook might be the face of the internet's social networking sites It is the "leading" social networking site, founded in 2004 by then-Harvard undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg (Lenhart et al., 2010) Among the numerous studies reporting statistics on Facebook adoption and usage (e.g., Hargittai, 2007; Jones & Fox, 2009; Lenhart & Madden, 2007; Salaway & Caruso, 2008), Ellison, Steinfield, and Lampe (2007) discovered that 94 percent of their college students were Facebook users, spending an average of 10–30 minutes on the site and having 150–200 friends More recently, 90 percent of undergrad college students were found to have Facebook accounts in a broader research (Harvard, 2011) Following Facebook's one billion user milestone in the first few days of October 2012 (Facebook.com), an intriguing use trend has surfaced In August 2012, college-age users TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MƠN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU (Facebook's most mature demographic) allegedly spent 25% less time on the site, a trend that is expected to continue (Blodget, 2012) Facebook is a website which allows users, who sign-up for free profiles, to connect with friends, work colleagues or people they don’t know, online It allows users to share pictures, music, videos, and articles, as well as their own thoughts and opinions with however many people they like Catching – up School news Schools can share information to students and parents quickly and effectively through Facebook page This might include updated facts about upcoming events, current happenings around the school, or recent announcements Opportunities Companies too post about their job offerings on Facebook pages Using such pages, students can find work offers with their qualifications Non – profit education space By creating a group in Facebook, students will be able to exchange information with their peer In this group, students share information exams, homework and assignments • MySpace MySpace was one of the first social networking sites, launched in 2003 by Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson With rapid development in its first few years, it was regarded as the most popular social networking site by 2009 (Lenhart, 2009) Fifty percent of adult social networking users said they had a MySpace profile Users were more likely to be female, Hispanic or black, and had a high school diploma with some college experience The average age was 27 years It, like Facebook, provides an interactive network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photographs, music, and videos submitted by users (boyd et al., 2007) • LinkedIn LinkedIn is a social networking site that was founded in May of 2003 and is mostly used for professional networking LinkedIn users frequently collaborate with others at work and have a contact list of individuals they TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MƠN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU know and trust Because interacting with people involves either a pre-existing connection or some mutual interaction, the trust factor is a key topic in this SNS (Papacharissi, 2009) Last December, comScore stated that LinkedIn had surpassed 35 million users, making it the third most popular social networking site in the United States Information about the social network Linkedin is quite rare and is not common in our country Targeted at Linkedin users are mainly businesses Therefore, understanding about LinkedIn social network is quite vague LinkedIn's platform is similar to Facebook and other social networks However, LinkedIn is mainly used by businesses and professional individuals for the purposes of recruitment, job search and business expansion In short, Linkedin is similar to Facebook but is mainly used for work and study instead of entertainment When applying LinkedIn to higher education as a tool to help students Create individual activity records: Linkedin also needs to provide a tool so that each student participating in the study has an electronic record That profile includes the student's activities and achievements, such as what majors studied, honors earned during college In addition, Successfully building a personal brand on LinkedIn will bring many benefits to students Linkedin is a professional social network, so the members on it are mostly working people, including from CEOs, directors to employees of companies and corporations Therefore, if you have a personal brand on LinkedIn, you will have many advantages Follow the activities of the university, class: Just one button "follow" your school right on LinkedIn Students will be updated more often with school news such as events, extracurricular activities and the latest updates on the curriculum Gain specialized knowledge: On Linkedin, there are many professional groups established for the purpose of exchanging knowledge and working experience in a specific field These groups are mainly made up of experts or qualified individuals in the same field Therefore, when participating in groups, students can discuss, share and learn many things • Blog TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MƠN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU A weblog, often known as a blog, is an online diary in which a number of writers engage by conversing about a certain topic or emphasis Users can publish personal material, remark on and link to other media sites, and make observations about other users' contributions, much like they can on other social networking platforms (Du & Wagner, 2006) The term "weblog" was first used in 1997 (Blood, 2000) By 2004, Merriam-Webster had named the word blog as its Word of the Year (http://www.merriam-webster.com/info/04words.htm), indicating its rapid development Technorati.com (2012) (http://technorati.com) is one of the most popular blog monitoring and rating services, with over 1,315,000 active sites in its database Blogs are most often given as a simple tool by hosting providers such as Blogger, ModBlog, and Xanga Larger and more sophisticated users may need to run their own blogs (Du & Wagner, 2006) Blog, short for weblog ("web diary"), is a form of online diary, which has exploded since the late 1990s Bloggers (bloggers), be they individuals or groups, post Online information on all subjects, usually related to personal experiences or opinions, mainly provides information on selected topics, unlike traditional newspapers Software-supported, easy to use, blogs spread very quickly and anyone can easily create a blog for themselves A blog site can contain hyperlinks, images, and links (to pages containing movies and music) The blog text uses a discussion style A blog is usually only related to a favorite topic Applications of blogging in higher education in Vietnam o A repository of resources and lectures We can create blogs as a place to store documents, images, lectures, virtual experiments, etc., which are collected and accumulated during our teaching Then select, arrange these documents and post them on the blog according to different topics and formats At this time, the blog will become a storage place for teachers and students to access and download If we want to restrict who can access the blog and download files, we can set an access password and provide this password to students TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MÔN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU o Create online discussions Usually, teachers only think about going to class and teaching the predefined knowledge in the lesson plan If in the process of teaching, there is an issue that needs to be discussed, teachers often limit the time for these discussions Well then, fellow teachers! Why don't you use the blog to expand the space and time for discussions? Students or teachers can continue to think about controversial topics or issues in class and continue to express their opinions or thoughts on the teacher's blog or the class Blogs are a great tool for teachers to create online discussions and encourage their students to participate In addition, blog viewers can also subscribe to receive email notifications whenever there is a new comment on a topic of interest to them This is a way to "simplify" the form of a forum (forum) Instead of struggling with creating a real forum, we simply created a topic to discuss and let the students participate o Create class publications Colorful wall newspapers with topics about schools, teachers, and friends are probably not too unfamiliar to those who have ever attended school How many "talent of painting and poetry" of the classes have contributed their energy, passion, and excitement when creating those wall newspapers And now, information and communication technology (ICT) continues to put in the hands of teachers and their students a new tool: blogs Students can collaborate to create an “online newspaper” for the class, for the school In this online newspaper, we can introduce how to study well, praise members for their progress, write about a memorable class memory, etc In the process of collaborating and helping each other, students I will learn how to work and share with others TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MƠN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU o Use blog as newsfeed Teachers can limit their paper consumption and energy in repeating every notice and note sent to students Simply try posting a news article on the class blog That's enough! Or teachers can also use blogs to express their opinions, share learning and teaching experiences, express interest in a certain issue, etc However, it should be noted that the announcements must be clear and detailed about the content, events, place, time of taking place and participants Besides posting announcements on blogs, teachers can also use other forms such as email, message boards sent via email (newsletter), common email system (mailing list), to deliver information to students and parents If you are still afraid of transferring information electronically, the simplest way is to experiment with your class or with a small group, and learn from the experience o Multimedia integration With a blog, information not only comes from text, but we can also use images, videos, and presentations to lead and introduce a specific content Remember the time when the whole world was shocked by the sudden passing of the King of Pop Michael Jackson, and then his songs, video clips, PowerPoint files flooded the Internet world So on your blog, you're just going to use a boring paragraph to remember Michael? Try embedding a video clip of “Heal the World” in your blog to hear and feel the messages of the King of Pop! Embedding video clips, images into blogs is very easy, teachers not need to have knowledge of code or programming The usual operation is just to copy the link of the multimedia file from the sharing website and paste it into the blog TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC KINH TẾ - TÀI CHÍNH MÔN: NHỮNG KỸ THUẬT TĂNG GIÁ TRỊ THƯƠNG HIỆU o Get feedback Blogs can be a good medium for teachers to get feedback from students and parents on teaching issues, questions related to school life, questions about class grading The process of absorbing and processing feedback helps in teaching and learning, as it helps clear up many of the questions that stand in the way of student learning The more willing a teacher is to communicate and answer questions from students and parents, the more esteem and confidence that teacher will gain from their peers, and the higher their image in the eyes of their peers industry and the Board of Directors • Instagram Instagram is a social network specializing in sharing photos and videos, so it is designed on the basis of creating beautiful and attractive images At the same time, it also provides a lot of different photo and video editing modes according to user preferences Instagram is a free photo and video sharing app for Apple iOS, Android, and Windows Phone We may upload photos or videos to the service and share them with our followers or with a select group of friends They can view, comment on, and like posts their friends share on Instagram Applications of Instagram in higher education in Vietnam Use instagram to make photo essays In a visually-focused class or subject, students can use Instagram to present a series of photos or graphics in a visually appealing way Instagram allows students to practice telling stories digitally in a way other social media platforms lack Students can create class-specific Instagram accounts and can delete them after the course is over if they wish Introduce outstanding information and images of the university to everyone This helps to increase the recognition of the university thereby attracting more students
