televisions The original services were analogue H owever, as digital broadcast technology has been introduced over the last several years STBs have becom e a rapidl y developing technology for both subscription and free to air terrestrial, cable and satellite TV services Most recentl y STBs have been developed for I nternet protocol TV services The range of types now available vary from simple adaptors for terrestrial free to air TV services to com plex m ultituner types with recording and time slip functions STBs are now emerging with rem ovable and non removable solid state mem ory – 16 – I EC 62087-5: 201 © I EC 201 Due to the rapid rise in STB use, concerns have been raised about the increased energ y consum ption by these devices and actions in the form of a num ber of programmes both voluntary and regulatory have been implem ented In I EC 62087: 201 STB m easurem ent methods were revised in response to both the changed nature of STBs and the need for internationall y accepted m ethods of measurem ent to facilitate the development of energ y efficiency programmes associated with STBs STBs covered by I EC 62087: 201 include STBs with recording capability using non rem ovable media such as HDDs or solid state m emory I t also includes recording capability on removable solid state mem ory DVD recorders and Blu-ray Disc TM (BD) recorders are excluded from the scope of this standard The m easuring m ethod covers both so called sim ple STBs and also com plex STBs The distinction between these types of STBs is whether conditional access is deployed in the STB The power
