choosing the signal to be used for the determination of the peak lum inance ratio, the APL of the signal should be considered Emissive display technologies are known to em ploy power lim iting circuits that reduce display luminance under high APL conditions Backlit display technologies may also vary their output based on signal APL For each of these signals, a single m easurement in the centre of the display is recomm ended for determ ining luminance in each picture setting of interest B Three bar vi deo si gn al The Energ y Star program and some North Am erican regulations use the three bar video signal described in 2 for determining the peak luminance ratio This signal has a relativel y high APL and is likel y to trigger power limiting circuits I EC 62087: 2008 made this signal available for determ ination of power consumption, so it has been convenient to use for determination of peak lum inance values as well B Box and outl i n e vi deo si gnal The box and outline video signal described in 2.2 is introduced in this edition of this standard and is intended to elim inate the effects of power limiting circuits H owever, no single applicable video signal can guarantee the absence of power lim iting for all m odels of equipm ent NOTE The box an d outli ne video sig nal is l ikely to be used in Europe for m easu rin g th e peak lum inance ratio rel ated to
