70 sector’s inability to address the region’s water crisis, which requires additional approaches, such as those involving the food sector or climate change Despite its meaningful contribution, this study does not consider the food sector, which is a factor that narrows the research results in discussing the region’s long-term water-saving scenarios Further, the research model would require a more holistic approach with multidimensional research to address issues in water savings as well as CO emissions Policy discourse Following studies provide analysis of energy-food-water linkages with the extended implication at policy discourse of these resources in the medium to long-term perspectives Scott et al (2011) investigate the relationship between energy and water in the United States to the year 2030 An increasing demand for energy and water resources under the challenges of rapid population and economic growth will lead to conflicts among sectors and across the country These challenges notwithstanding, the United States enacted its Energy and Water Research Integration Act to separately consider its energy and water development policies Therefore, this research aims to develop an integrated planning and evaluation of the energy and water sectors The author analyses the relationship between energy and water in four regions of the United States—the Southwest, East, Northeast, and Central regions—by developing three scenarios for energy and water These scenarios involve i) developing energy and water in the Southwest, where water is scarce; ii) ensuring balance between social and environmental impacts and coal development in the East; and iii) managing conflicts between environmental impacts and the economic purposes when developing natural gas shale in the Central and Northeast regions of US The author addresses the necessity for a cross-sectoral approach in making policy decisions that impact the energy and food sectors This research applies the LCA, policy analysis, calculation model, and scenario analysis methods, which create a multidimensional approach The research results contribute to future works by consolidating the integrated energy and water research perspectives However, the study did not consider these various scenarios’ socio-economic and environmental impacts, which are significant for broader policy analyses and in proposing a policymaking framework
