About me  I graduated from Danang University of Technology  I am working at Hydropower Project Management Board –EVN  Position: Manager of Material and Equipment Department  I have one son only, he is year old Thesis proposal – Page Introduction Outline of this talk Thesis Title: Applying project management performance assessment (PMPA) model to analyse the effects of influential factors on project management performance in HPMB3  Introduction  Literature Review Research Methods Concluding Remark References Appendix Thesis proposal – Page Introduction Research Background  Overview of project:  A prerequisite and impulsive element of the development of a corporate, a country  Efforts to create desired products and services with limited time and resources VietNam Law : “An investment project is a set of proposals relating to spend capital on creating, expanding or improving certain facilities in order to achieve the growth in quantity or maintain, improve, enhance quality of products or services within certain time” Thesis proposal – Page Introduction Research Background  Basic attributes of project:  Determined purpose and result  Its own growth cycle and limited life time  Project product is unique, unprecedented  Operation environment is colliding, unstable and risky  Complicated correlations between functional management and project management Thesis proposal – Page Introduction Research Background  Overview of project management:  The application of knowledges, skills, tools, techniques into project performance in order to meet demand from a project  The process of overall planing, coordinating time, resources and monitoring achieving project’s goals  Unrepeated process, absolutely different to manage daily work at a production performance (PMP)  The project management performance enhancement is a key factor guaranteeing the success of a project  Performance is an intangible thing and hard identification, so that choosing exact tools for assessing project performance to enhance PMP of corporation is a challenge Thesis proposal – Page Introduction Research Background  The status of project management in Vietnam  To abide by the Construction Law and the Investment Law  Regulations only mention to monitoring and assessing results of project performance (PP) but not mention to PMP Thesis proposal – Page Introduction Research Background  Hydro Power Management Board No.3 (HPMB3)  Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is a state corporation + Investors of many major electricity project + 66% of total power capacity of Vietnam electricity system with 38% power capacity from hydropower  HPMB3 is a member of EVN, assigned to manage construction of hydropower projects in the central region of Vietnam  The project managements in HPMB3 mention to monitoring and assessing results of PP but not mention to PMP Thesis proposal – Page Introduction Research motive  PMPA model, which was proposed by Bryde et al and examined by Tahir.M.Q et al, has positive impact on PMP and used as a framework to assess PMP of a corporation  The application of PMPA models to assess operational efficiency of project management have done by developed countries but not antecedent in Vietnam  The study of applying PMPA model to analyse the effect of influential factors on project management performance of project management boards in Vietnam is neccessary This research is also becoming an urgent demand in HPMB3 Thesis proposal – Page 10 Research Methods Hypothesis:   H1: The PM Leadership has positive effect over the PMP  H2: The PM Staff has positive effect over the PMP  H3: The PM Policy and Strategy have positive effect over the PMP  H4: The PM Partnership and Recourses have positive effect over the PMP  H5: The PM Life Cycle Process has positive effect over the PMP  H6: The PM Key Performance Indicators have positive effect over the PMP Thesis proposal – Page 22 Research Methods Research Design: Survey method:  Type of research: Quantitative  Level of research: Confirmatory  Measuring object: PMP in HPPMB3 Survey Object: HPPMB3 staffs and project partner  Questionnaires: point Likert Scale is used  Sample size: 150 sample Thesis proposal – Page 23 Research Methods Research Design: Survey method (cont): Questionnaires consisting of dependent variables (PMP) and independent variables (L, S, PS, PR, PLC, KPIs)  Questionnaire was developed depending influential factors on PMP and there are some supplement element  150 questionnaires will be delivery to questionereds throught ways: - Sending questionnaires directly to HPPMB3 staff and project partner - Sending questionnaires to their e-mails and request to answering questions by telephone (if any) Thesis proposal – Page 24 Research Methods Research Design: Response rate of questionnaires:  After data collection, I will code data in Excel 2003 and SPSS16.0 For calculating results, Multiple Regression analysis and Pearson Correlation are used  If collected data is not enough 150 samples as I expect, I will check to explain suitably Incase neccesary, I will try to send questionnaires more to collect data, not design data by random by myself Thesis proposal – Page 25 Research Methods Research Design: Description of the statistical analysis method:  Descriptive Statistic: Collect and calculating data following percent quantitive of point of questionnaires  Factor Analysis: Collect small variables into vector (L, S, PS, PR, PLC, KPIs)  Checking the reliability of each factor by using Cronbach”s Alpha: Checking small vectors Checking the correlation relationship between independent and dependent factor  Figure out the Regression Equation by using Linear Regression Analysis: Checking influential level of factors Thesis proposal – Page 26 Research Methods Research Design: The Equation of Regression: The Equation of Regression can be described: Y~f(X,Y) Where: X is independent factor; Y is dependent factor The multiple Linear Regression equation testing are following: Y = α + β1(x1)+β2(x2)+β3(x3)+β4(x4)+β5(x5)+β6(x6)+ε PMP = α + β1(L)+β2(S)+β3(PS)+β4(PR)+β5(PLC)+β6(KPI)+ε Thesis proposal – Page 27 Concluding Remark Expected Results and Contributions:  Effective project management plays an important role in   impulse the development of the country  We focus on analysing the effects of influential factors on PMP in HPMB3  The research’s result will be an important basis to propose solutions enhancing performance of the organisation Other than that, PMPA model may be used as a framework for assessing project management performance (PMP) for project management board in Vietnam Thesis proposal – Page 28 Concluding Remark Progress and Following Schedule
