It seems like only a decade ago that the popular opinion was that not a lot of furniture would ever be sold by mail order. First, people would need to see and touch it in person, Second, they would not make a large financial purchase sight unseen. It only took a few years to disprove that theory. Catalogue companies like Frontgate, Ballard Designs, Pierre Deux and many others saw their business soar by oering easy shopping, unique looks, quick, dependable delivery and guaranteed satisfaction. Although we in the industry knew the furniture was usually not a bargain price-wise, the consumer didn’t know that and catalogue sales of furniture grew into a multi-billion dollar industry. Then came internet sales. Ignoring the success of how well furniture had sold via catalogue sales, many predicted that consumers might purchase accessories or small occasional pieces under $300 but would not make large purchases of furniture on the internet. Once again they were mistaken. One internet company reports selling at least one US$4000 sofa a week! CONTENT AS THE NEW CURRENCY I recently attended an all-day conference at High Point University. The theme was the online marketing of furniture. The keynote speaker was Kristine Kennedy, the Editorial Director of Wayfair, formerly known as CSN Stores. Why was an editor, rather than a marketing person, giving a speech on how to sell furniture online? Kristine came from Better Homes and Gardens, one of America’s leading magazines. She had worked there 17 years, the last eight as East Coast Editor. She made it clear up front that she had been hired as a writer, not as a sales person. She explained that Wayfair had realised that the key to dierentiating itself from the competition was content. She strongly believes that content is the currency of online influence. Her role is to provide content by oering ideas and advice that provide a service to the consumer and connect her with Wayfair. Today 78 percent of Americans use social media. Blogs continue to grow in both popularity and influence. The first thing Kristine did when she joined Wayfair was to review the copy on their website. It was fairly dull and did not appeal to women. She created a blog called My Way Fair, which included articles on colour and decorating. She will soon introduce guest bloggers. She also invites writers to contribute blogs and pays them, just like a publication. There are many interior designers who like to blog. Kristine calls them: “Our Wayfair Homemakers.” Whether you are a manufacturer or a retailer, ask yourself: “What are we already doing that we can turn into content?” Content attracts both new and returning customers. You use it to educate the customer about the product, or the product category, increasing both interest and desire to own. CREATE A BUZZ The customer uses your information to build their confidence in purchasing the product; therefore it is an eective way to overcome any of their objections or reservations. An editorial approach to content gives what appears to be an impartial endorsement to the product. You can give it personality, tell its ‘story’ and even humanise it. If done properly, your content can create a buzz by giving people a reason to talk about you, as well as refer to your decorating tips and ideas. This creates repeat visits, even when the customer has no particular purchase in mind. Here’s a simple exercise: Make a list of words that describes your company’s philosophy. This becomes your brand’s personality. Here are the words Wayfair came up with when creating its new content: Down to earth, human, up to date, approachable, friendly, imperfect, comfortable, helpful, accessible, engaging, quirky and personal. These words then become the foundation of your brand. Use them sparingly when writing editorial content about your product or company. TO TWEET OR NOT TO TWEET Make sure you are keeping up with the latest forms of social media that may broaden your audience. Pinterest is very hot right now. It allows both you and your customers to ‘pin’ home furnishings pictures or suggestions on a website. It is proving to be quite eective. Wayfair had 1400 pins posted at the time I heard Kristine’s presentation. Here are some examples of how Wayfair creates the image it desires for some of its brands: • Flash Sales: Very editorial in appearance, such as ‘Editor’s Picks’, but are really editorial content designed to promote luxury items • Added Value: Don’t just ask your customer to buy a Le Creuset pot, throw in recipes and cooking ideas for free • Stylish and Entertaining • Special Promotions and Bargains The secret to success is dierentiating yourself from the competition. Give your customers something of value for free. Don’t be afraid to be a bit wacky. Be original and entertaining. Most of all, constantly update your web page. Give your customers more than just a price deal to attract them to your page on a frequent basis.
