different teachers who have prior experience allowing me the opportunity to learn about how the lecture is taught to the students as well as how to approach and answer specific questions or problems the students may be facing on a daily basis 15 2.1.2 Internship Diary I spent weeks as an intern at Thu An Tutoring Center I went to the center days a week (from Monday to Saturday) My working and skills learned during the internship at the Academic Department - Having a small party with members of the Academic Department Table 2.1: Assigned tasks 18 2.2 The difficulties and learned lessons in my internship 2.2.1 The difficulties This is the first time I have worked in a real center, so I felt unfamiliar at first I know that internship is important because it helps students get used to the real working environment I learned a lot and had memorable experiences Although I read and learned about the teaching assistant interns' work before the internship, I still got some difficulties Firstly, it's psychological worries For the first time, I was not confident that I could everything well I feared of not doing well enough, doing wrong, not being able to get along with colleagues, etc But, after a few working days, I felt everything was fine and I thought that I could well and removed my worries Secondly, I got some professional difficulties Although I have specialized knowledge of English Teaching, I have the struggle to apply the knowledge in reality When I was assigned to help teachers in the teaching process, such as organizing games in English in the classroom for students, I often felt confused I don't know how to engage students in my lectures and how to design PowerPoint to deliver the lesson effectively I also didn't have much experience in using Word and PowerPoint software Meanwhile, PowerPoint is quite necessary for work Therefore, I tried to spend more time practicing to be able to use PowerPoint software well Besides, some of the teaching aids at the center are quite new to me, so it took me a little time to get used to them Thirdly, one of the biggest challenges I had faced during my time in the classroom was working with children with behavioural difficulties and hyperactivity, who found very difficult to follow rules and stick to them Most of the time they refused to the assigned tasks and caused disruption among the class or got involved in any sort of fight or exhibited rude behaviours towards me, teachers and classmates When these situations happened I tried to give them a time out in a different place or environment in order to thought over their behaviours 19 In addition, the time pressure to complete tasks is also one of the difficulties I usually spent a lot of time studying materials or updating new teaching methods, so I took much time to complete tasks Some of the tasks that I find the most difficult are helping programmes of learning activities according to the plan I also got a little difficulties with some tasks such as what material needs to be adjusted with the students, tracking learning progress, correcting homework for students, etc Trying to get things done on time sometimes made me stressed Finally, adapting to a new environment also made me a little difficulties at first The center environment is completely different from the studying environment, so I was a bit shocked Therefore, I got a little difficulties when I worked with my manager, colleagues, students, parents or other departments 2.2.2 The learned lessons In the process of studying at university, the internship is an extremely precious opportunity to experience the most authentic, professional working environment Four weeks in Thu An Tutoring Center not only takes my academic knowledge into practical experience but also lays a solid foundation for my future jobs Firstly, one of my lessons is being proactive At the center, everyone has their own job They not have time to care about what you are doing, whether you understand and it or not So, I always actively find and the assigned tasks If there are problems, I have to ask my colleagues or my supervisor to get the best solution Secondly, during my internship, I realized not to be afraid to ask questions At the beginning of my internship, I didn’t know how to lots of things I was always concerned about annoying someone Therefore, it took me time to complete tasks However, my supervisor and colleagues were very willing to help me or give me advice This was really useful for me 20 Thirdly, this internship made me improve my soft skills Soft skills are one of the important factors that help us succeed in career Apart from gaining a lot of major knowledge and teaching skills from the teachers, I picked up some of their valuable soft skills such as time management and communication skills as well Surely, this opportunity will be helpful to my future jobs In addition to improving my soft skills, I have also improved my English skills I had occasion to communicate with native speaker teacher, teach students English and translate many important documents The center’s teachers and staff guided me how to translate documents or interpret in front of the crowd confidently Other thing I could learn from this internship course was interpreting skills I had a chance to work as interpreter for native speaker teacher The teachers and the staff at Thu An Tutoring Center have been enthusiastic in pointing out my mistakes so that I could receive a lot of valuable experience for my future job The last skill I learned from this internship was teaching skill I had a time working as a teacher and teaching assistant When teaching, explaining the grammar structures for students, I realized that my English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation were improved a lot By observing teachers’ teaching process, I am acquainted with how to use appropriate words for students in a proper way Besides, ways to have conversation with students and how to design PowerPoint to convey the lessons productively are essential manners I learnt and applied After nearly a month of training at Thu An Tutoring Center, I myself have accumulated valuable lessons and will always be useful to me in the future 21 PART 3: THE REALITY OF USING ENGLISH IN THU AN TUTORING CENTER 3.1 The reality of using English in Thu An Tutoring Center English is also one of the conditions for recruiting employees Depending on the position to be recruited in the departments, the requirements for the applicant's English level are also different During the interview, the recruiter will communicate with you in English to check your level However, the frequency of using English by departments in the center is different The Academic department usually uses English every day Because the Academic department works directly with foreign teachers, solves all their problems The staff must communicate with foreign teachers both speaking and writing in English The Enrollment department or the Accounting department doesn't use English much Because the Enrollment department is responsible for consulting courses and arranging class schedules for students Meanwhile, the Accounting department mainly uses Vietnamese to write reports English-using skills of employees in Thu An Tutoring Center are shown in the table 3.1 below English qualification A B C Total Table 3.1: Structure of employees' English-using skills at Thu An Tutoring Center in the period from 2020 to 2022 (Source: Academic Department – Thu An Tutoring Center) Table 3.1 shows that in recent years, the foreign language proficiency of employees at Thu An Tutoring Center has mostly reached C In recent years, the number of 22 employees reaching level B has increased that it reached 21.42% (3/14) in 2020; 23.80% (5/21) in 2021; 26.92% (7/26) in 2022 In 2022, the number of employees with C levels increases compared to 2021 and 2020 is due to the number of new recruits In the two years of 2021 and 2022, the percentage of employees with foreign language proficiency in grades B and C increased significance due to changes in the requirements of the company's employees Due to having to deal with a large number of foreign teachers by phone, video call or email, the employees are trained in skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing from Beginner to Advanced levels (A1 to C2) As a requirement for outcome standards, academic managers and enrollment managers must be proficient in the four skills of listening – speaking – reading - writing and reading comprehension of contracts and international codes of conduct in English according to the Competency Framework English designed by the center 3.2 Proposing solutions to improve the quality of using English in the center After my internship period at Thu An Tutoring Center, I think center needs to something to help the employees improve their English Some people find it extremely difficult to learn English on their own in the workplace Lack of 23 confidence in their English prevents employees from speaking up, especially in the workplace So, I propose some solutions for the center First of all, ensure the candidate's English level when recruiting In addition to the professional test, the applicant's English skills must also be tested The center need to set appropriate level for each position Secondly, promote all the departments to use English more and create more opportunities for employees to work with foreigners Communicating with foreigners more will help employees improve their English skills and also help them communicate more confidently Thirdly, the center can organize more teambuilding sessions with the theme of improving English skills This not only creates a comfortable atmosphere, but also creates opportunities for employees to learn from each other So, their English skills can be significantly improved Finally, the most important thing is the attitude of each person If they have a positive attitude, they will always try to improve their English The center should have small gifts to reward those who always make such efforts 24 PART 4: SUGGESTED THESIS TOPIC English is considered as the most popular language popularly used to exchange information and ideas among different nations and cultures today Thanks to their English translated versions, countries are able to have mutual understanding and a sense of global citizenship in this multilingual world Moreover, English translation makes people understand each other more in the process of diplomatic relations and economic cooperation and other fields in today’s era when countries tend to integrate for the whole development As a result, English translation has gradually become an indispensable and pressing tool which set the path for the global success of individuals, organizations, and even businesses in the modern time when society is more developed and competition is relentless Therefore, nowadays when Vietnam becomes one of the members of World Trade Organization, it is necessary for Vietnamese students of English to have expert translation skill in order to meet the demand of integration into the world economy and exchange of culture with other countries As a result, learning translation skill is undoubtedly an advantage for Vietnamese students’ ideal future jobs I realize that students also have some mistakes on grammar, word choices and so on in Vietnamese- English translation Thus, I would like to propose a topic for my graduation thesis entitled: "A study on common errors in Vietnamese- English translation made by third-year students of English Faculty at Thuong Mai University." 25 CONCLUSION After about one month of training process at Thu An Tutoring Center, I finished my internship successfully with the whole-hearted help and careful guidance of my supervisor Ms Hoang Thi Anh Tho, the training guide Ms Dao Hong Ngoc and all employees of Thu An Tutoring Center Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my training guide Ms Dao Hong Ngoc for her constant guidance and Thu An Tutoring Center as well as all of the center staff for supporting and creating favorable conditions for me to complete my training process and this report Thank you very much! iv ... of Thu An Tutoring Center 1.1.3 Mission of Thu
