Rationale of the study

English has established itself as a global language, serving as either a second language or an official language in many countries To validate English proficiency, individuals can obtain international English certificates through tests like IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC Achieving a strong score on these assessments is essential for gaining entry into quality academic institutions, facilitating both college admissions and opportunities for studying abroad.

For international students, proficiency in English is crucial as it is the medium of instruction in many foreign universities and essential for social interactions in a new country The trend of studying abroad is on the rise, with many students viewing it as a pathway to employment in multinational corporations in developed nations In 2021, approximately 190,000 Vietnamese students pursued education at foreign universities, highlighting this growing interest A key requirement for applying to these institutions, in addition to GPA and extracurricular activities, is obtaining international English language certificates.

In recent years, Vietnamese universities have increasingly adopted a dual enrollment system that combines international English certificates with university test scores or school reports This approach has significantly impacted admissions, with institutions like the National Economic University and Foreign Trade University reporting that such criteria account for 40% to 50% of their enrollment targets in 2021 This shift presents a valuable opportunity for students with average academic performance to gain access to prestigious universities in Vietnam, as the traditional admissions process often demands high scores attainable only by academically strong students.

International English tests offer significant advantages for learners, but their growing popularity is influenced by various factors beyond just educational benefits Given the limited research on this topic, we undertook a study to explore "The real situation of using international English certificates in the university entrance exams of students in Hanoi."

Objectives of the study

This study aims to investigate the current utilization of international English certificates in various schools and universities, highlighting both the positive and negative impacts these certificates have on students' college admissions.

This research evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of obtaining English certificates, highlighting the types of candidates who should pursue international English qualifications for university applications As a result, this study offers valuable guidance for parents and students in deciding whether to invest in English certification.

Scope of the study

This study focuses on high school students, graduates, and postgraduates in Hanoi who utilize English certificates for university admissions Due to constraints related to time, cost, and human resources, the research does not cover all international certificates Instead, it aims to identify the key factors influencing the use of these certificates in university entrance exams.

Research Questions

1 Why are more and more students choosing to use English certificates to get into universities?

2 What are the effects of choosing to use English certificates to get into universities?

Methods of the study

The research will employ both quantitative and qualitative methods, utilizing survey questionnaires distributed to approximately 100 students from the National Economics University This approach aims to collect data reflecting students' opinions and attitudes regarding the importance of English certificates for university admission.

Tentative report outline

The study consisted of three main parts as follow:

Part I - Introduction: Presented a brief introduction of the rationale for the study, the aims, and objectives, scope, significance, research method as well as the design of the study.

Part II - Development: Included the following chapters:

Chapter 1: Literature review, dealt with the concepts of online shopping, shopping motivation, online shopping perceptions, the influences of shopping motivations, and reviewed studies of the moderating effects of involvement

Chapter 2: Methodology, presented research questions, participants, methods of the study, instruments, data collection.

Chapter 3: Results and Discussions, described data analysis, discussion, and major findings.

In the conclusion of the study, key issues were summarized, highlighting the research's limitations and offering suggestions for future investigation Additionally, the article includes a References section that lists all sources cited and Appendices that provide the survey questionnaires used for students and lecturers.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Definition of international English certificates

A "certificate," as defined by Collins, is an official document verifying various personal facts such as birth, marital status, and academic achievements According to BDC, international English language certification standards establish the necessary criteria for English learning programs to ensure consistent quality across countries The April International website highlights that numerous English certificates evaluate language skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing To effectively reach specific language goals, it is crucial to select the appropriate English language test, considering factors like universal recognition, scoring systems, test formats, and registration fees, with a focus on the main language proficiency assessments.

Kinds of international English certificates

There are several different exams for English as a foreign language, and the exam candidates choose to take depends on their academic and professional goals

The recent Cambridge Assessment English report highlights that the IELTS, or International English Language Testing System, is a globally recognized standardized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers.

Established in 1989, IELTS is one of the world's leading English language tests, recognized globally for its academic version tailored for educational and professional settings Additionally, IELTS serves as a valid proof of English proficiency for various work permits and immigration processes.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a widely recognized international certification administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) This test assesses English language proficiency, particularly in academic settings, making it essential for non-native speakers aiming to succeed in English-speaking environments (Courtney Montgomery, 2017).

TOEFL scores play a crucial role in the university admissions process, serving as a key indicator of English proficiency for prospective students This test is essential for individuals seeking admission to foreign high schools, exchange programs, community colleges, or for obtaining student visas, as it demonstrates their ability to succeed in an English-speaking educational environment.

The TOEFL test emphasizes the use of English in academic settings, making it a key criterion for university and college admissions It features reading passages that employ formal academic language and advanced vocabulary, distinguishing it from casual English Similar to the IELTS, the TOEFL is divided into four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

The TOEIC, or Test of English for International Communication, is a crucial standardized English assessment utilized by employers globally to evaluate candidates' ability to communicate effectively in diverse work environments According to the EF Blog, this test is more aligned with professional settings than academic language assessments, making it an essential tool for companies seeking to ensure effective cross-cultural communication among colleagues and clients.

The TOEIC offers two distinct tests that assess different English skills: the Receptive English skills, which encompass reading and listening, and the Productive English skills, which focus on speaking and writing Students have the flexibility to take either one or both TOEIC tests based on their individual requirements.

This recent research has begun to provide several well-known international certificates that are commonly used in college exams for students.

The relationship between international English certificates and college admission

In recent years, university admission opportunities have expanded significantly, with various methods now available, including high school graduation exam results, academic records, and competency assessment tests Additionally, the growing popularity of English proficiency certificates among students, parents, and educators has strengthened the connection between international English certifications and college admissions.

Do Van Dung (2021), headteacher of HCMUTE, emphasized the inevitability of university admissions based on international foreign language certificates, viewing this approach as a catalyst for Vietnamese students to enhance their language skills Similarly, Le Thu Hien from Truong Dinh High School (2021) noted that while assessments of high school learning outcomes vary across regions, directly recruiting candidates with international language certifications is a positive step These certificates offer high reliability and assess all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—ensuring objectivity and confirming the candidates' foreign language proficiency.

While high scores in English certificates can be beneficial, it is crucial to expand global knowledge and enhance soft skills such as communication and problem-solving Minh Hai, vice-rector of Ngo Gia Dinh University, emphasized that language is merely a communication tool; effective conversation with foreigners requires more than just linguistic proficiency Thus, IELTS should be viewed as a certification of communication ability Additionally, a solid knowledge base is vital for job searching and building professional relationships.

English proficiency for students is typically assessed through English certificates, with varying criteria across universities for their acceptance For example, institutions focused on economics often demand higher language proficiency scores compared to those in the technology field.

Reasons why students choose to use international English certificates to get

In recent years, the trend of requiring English certificates for university admissions has gained significant attention from both students and parents Understanding how to effectively use these certificates is essential for prospective applicants Consequently, extensive research has been conducted to explore the various advantages that English certificates offer in the admission process.

As economies develop, the importance of English proficiency increases significantly, with numerous jobs requiring strong communication and writing skills Employees with English expertise often enjoy higher wages and become vital assets to their companies This growing demand for English proficiency drives individuals to enhance their language skills, as English certificates serve as a reflection of their capabilities in the job market.

Tran Huu Chung (2021), vice president of Gia Dinh University, emphasized that university admission based on international foreign language certificates is an inevitable trend that will continue to expand, providing candidates with greater opportunities Similarly, Tran Khac Thac (2021), vice president of training at Thuy Loi University, highlighted the importance of high school students dedicating time to enhance their foreign language skills alongside subjects like Math and Literature This preparation is crucial as the ASEAN labor market opens, where individuals lacking English proficiency may struggle in domestic competition Consequently, possessing an English certificate not only facilitates university admission but also enhances job prospects in the future.

Students with English certificates can be exempted from English exams, alleviating unnecessary stress and maintaining educational quality This exemption allows students to focus on other subjects, potentially improving their scores on university entrance exams Thanh Tung, a student at Le Quy Don High School, emphasized the advantage of using his IELTS certificate to avoid the foreign language exam, noting that reducing the number of exams eases pressure Additionally, in certain university majors, possessing English certificates can exempt students from various English-related credits, enabling them to dedicate more time to other academic pursuits or part-time jobs.

Many top universities increasingly require English certificates as part of their admission criteria, leading to a higher percentage of students gaining entry with these qualifications According to Le Dinh Tung (2021), Head of Training Management at Hanoi Medical University, 10% of admission targets include additional English certificate requirements, allowing students with these certificates to score 2 to 3 points lower in entrance exams compared to those without This trend is not limited to Hanoi Medical University; other prestigious institutions like the National Economics University and Foreign Trade University also favor applicants with English certificates, enabling them to secure admission with lower scores Thus, obtaining an English certificate significantly enhances a student's chances of acceptance into top universities.

In today's competitive academic landscape, students increasingly prioritize obtaining English certificates as a crucial requirement for university admissions Furthermore, it is strongly advised that students improve their English skills to enhance their prospects for both university acceptance and future employment opportunities.

The effects of choosing to use English certificates to get into universities

In recent years, numerous universities have adopted international English certificates as a criterion for admission, recognizing their numerous benefits This essay will outline several key advantages of this approach.

Many believe that passing a university entrance exam is easier than relying solely on college exam scores, with an international English certificate accounting for 30% to 40% of the admission criteria This allows students with such certificates to focus on just two additional subjects, significantly saving time during the application process Furthermore, top universities like FTU, NEU, and HUST have adopted international English certificates as part of their admission requirements this year, thereby expanding opportunities for students to gain entry into prestigious institutions.

Obtaining an international English certificate can significantly enhance a student's chances of securing a scholarship when applying to universities This certification demonstrates the student's proficiency in English, making them more appealing candidates for scholarship opportunities Additionally, high scores in these tests boost students' confidence in their English skills, motivating them to dedicate substantial time to practice Consequently, this commitment often results in achieving their desired scores, further improving their prospects for academic success.

International English certificates serve as a testament to students' dedication and hard work, with high scores indicating significant preparation and effort These certificates assess not only English proficiency but also the ability to navigate real-life situations, thereby enhancing problem-solving skills and reflecting practical applications of the language.

Possessing international English certificates has countless positive effects not only in entering universities but also in the future Therefore, students should own those because of the given effects.

Although having an international English certificate could provide countless positive effects, there are some negative effects that students should pay attention to.

Many students struggle to balance their time between preparing for international English certificates and their other subjects The distinct question formats of these certificates require significant study and familiarization, making it challenging to concentrate on specific academic goals As a result, some students find themselves trying to excel in both international English exams and high school graduation tests, but often lack the necessary time to meet both objectives effectively.

Repeatedly taking the IELTS test can lead to significant time and financial losses for students who fail to achieve their target band score For instance, a student aiming for a 6.5 may only score 6.0, resulting in an additional cost of nearly 5 million for retaking the exam.

The rising trend of international English certificates has prompted many parents to pressure their children into taking these exams, which can result in significant stress for students Those lacking proficiency in English may experience depression and achieve little success Additionally, the obsession with obtaining these certificates has led to the proliferation of cram centers offering low-quality teaching tips and lessons aimed at achieving high scores.

That is the reason why sometimes the students who achieve high scores in international English certificates are not as good at English as the lower ones.

In summary, utilizing international English certificates for university admission offers numerous advantages; however, it is essential to acknowledge the potential drawbacks Therefore, students and parents should conduct thorough research and exercise caution to mitigate any negative impacts.

DATA ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS

The chart clearly indicates that undergraduates represent the highest percentage at 77%, significantly outpacing high school students at 20% and postgraduates at just 3% This stark contrast highlights the dominance of undergraduates in the data presented.

Figure 2.2 indicates that the majority of students have either used or plan to use international English certificates, with the highest percentage representing those who have already obtained such certificates for university entrance Conversely, the lowest percentage corresponds to individuals who do not intend to pursue any international English certificates, accounting for 9% Notably, 41% of students fall into the category of not having international English certificates and not planning to use them in the future.

It can be clearly seen that 100% of students took the IELTS for their international English certificates, without any TOEFL or TOEIC.

According to Pie Chart II.3.2, a significant number of individuals view international English certificates as fairly important, with 28 respondents supporting this perspective In contrast, only 16 and 6 participants regarded these certificates as extremely important and important, respectively Notably, there were no respondents who considered international English certificates as not at all important or slightly important, highlighting a general consensus on their value.

The following pie chart indicates different reasons of using certificates in university entrance exams.

Various factors contributed to the trend of students pursuing international English certificates Primarily, many top universities require these certificates as part of their admission criteria, with 38 students citing this as their motivation Additionally, 37 students indicated that obtaining these certificates offers a competitive edge in future job searches and helps alleviate the pressure of concentrating solely on two or fewer exams during national high school assessments.

A survey of 30 participants revealed that 23 students were confident that obtaining international English certificates would enhance their opportunities Recognizing the value of these certifications, they decided to invest in their English language skills and pursue international qualifications.

Among the students surveyed, 20 pursued international English certificates to secure scholarships for studying abroad, while 18 opted for these certifications to avoid the necessity of graduation English exams Additionally, a limited number of students cited alternative motivations for obtaining these certificates.

The data indicates that a significant majority of students perceive positive effects of international English certificates, with 46% agreeing that these certificates simplify university entrance exam processes compared to college exam scores Additionally, 54% of students feel more confident with an international English certificate, while none expressed total disagreement Furthermore, over 40% of students believe that these certificates enable frequent English practice, and around one-third neither agree nor disagree, agree, or totally agree on the scholarship advantages associated with international English certificates.

A significant 40% of students who undervalued international English certificates demonstrated a strong work ethic, four times greater than those who opposed the idea Meanwhile, 42% of students recognized that these certificates provide better opportunities for admission to prestigious universities Additionally, 38% of students expressed neutrality on the matter, while 36% acknowledged that these certificates enhance problem-solving skills and reflection, as they are tailored to real-world scenarios.

A survey reveals varied opinions on the negative impacts of international English certificates for university entrance Notably, 40% of students feel that the demands of preparing for these certificates hinder their ability to focus on other subjects, while an additional 28% remain neutral Furthermore, 40% express concern that the pressure to achieve specific goals detracts from their overall focus Financially, 36% believe that repeatedly taking the test without achieving the desired score is a waste of money, with 32% fully agreeing Additionally, nearly one-third of students find the stress of parental pressure to pursue these certificates overwhelming, and the same percentage acknowledges that the obsession with these qualifications has led to the rise of low-quality cram centers and teaching methods aimed solely at achieving high scores.

The pie chart reveals that 38 students, representing 93%, are expected to pursue an IELTS certification, while only three students are set to take the TOEIC exam This indicates a significant preference among students for IELTS, as evidenced by the fact that 100% of students in figure 2.3.1 are studying for the IELTS.

The data presented in Figure II.5.2 indicates that the majority of students, 17 in total, are targeting an IELTS score of 7.0, which is significantly higher than the 10 students aiming for 7.5 and the 8 students striving for 6.5 Additionally, 3 students are on track to achieve a score of 9.0, while 2 are aiming for 8.0 Notably, only 1 student is likely to reach a score of 6.0 in the near future.

The analysis reveals that a significant majority of individuals recognize the value of international English certificates, with 18 respondents considering them fairly important In contrast, 15 participants deemed them extremely important, while 6 rated them simply important Only 2 students viewed these certificates as slightly important, and notably, no one expressed the opinion that they are not important at all.

A significant number of students pursued international English certificates primarily for their advantages in future job prospects, with 33 students citing this reason Additionally, 23 students aimed for higher wages, while 15 sought scholarships Fourteen students recognized that many prestigious universities require English certificates for admission Nine students appreciated the ability to focus on fewer exams, thereby reducing pressure, while eight found it convenient to avoid graduation English exams Seven students believed it was easier to meet university English output standards, and only two students mentioned other reasons, including parental pressure.

The data indicates that nearly half of the students believe that using international English certificates simplifies the university entrance process compared to relying on college exam scores Additionally, 43.9% of students feel more confident in their English skills and practice more regularly due to these certificates Approximately 36.58% believe it is easier to obtain scholarships, with 34.15% agreeing with this sentiment While about 50% of students think that having an international English certificate opens more doors to prestigious universities, there is a notable lack of disagreement on this point Furthermore, 43.9% agree that these certificates enhance problem-solving skills and reflection, highlighting their practical application in real-life situations.

A significant portion of students express concerns about the negative impacts of international English certificates on their university entrance preparation Nearly 50% feel they lack the time to balance studying for these certificates with other subjects Furthermore, 43.9% struggle to maintain focus on specific goals, while 41.46% believe that repeatedly taking these tests is a waste of money Many students report feeling stressed due to parental pressure to pursue these certificates, with a notable 39.02% agreeing that the obsession with these qualifications has led to the rise of low-quality cram centers focused on achieving high scores.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Suggestions for students

III.1.1 Suggestion on how to use English certificate effectively

In today's academic landscape, obtaining English certificates has become increasingly important for university applications However, students must research individual university requirements, as these can vary significantly For instance, Foreign Trade University mandates a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, while National Economics University accepts students with a score of 5.5.

III.1.2 Suggestion on how to balance other subjects

Many students struggle to balance their time between learning English and other subjects, which can result in ineffective studying To enhance their learning, students should create a clear timetable and adhere to it Additionally, identifying their proficiency levels and selecting appropriate study methods can significantly improve their effectiveness in mastering English.

Parents must understand their children's capabilities to avoid setting unrealistic expectations that can lead to stress For instance, if a child scores 6.0 on the IELTS exam, but parents anticipate an 8.0, it can create unnecessary pressure on the student.

In summary, parents are encouraged to guide their children in pursuing international English certificates, as these credentials offer numerous benefits However, it is crucial for parents to thoroughly research their options and foster motivation in their students throughout the process.
