Rationale of the study
English has established itself as a global language, serving as either a second or official language in many countries To validate English proficiency, international certificates like IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC are awarded after standardized tests Achieving a high score on these assessments is essential for accessing quality academic opportunities, whether for college admission or studying abroad.
For international students, proficiency in English is crucial as it is the medium of instruction in many foreign universities and essential for social interactions The trend of studying abroad is on the rise, serving as a gateway to employment opportunities in multinational companies in developed nations In Vietnam alone, the number of students pursuing education overseas reached approximately 190,000 in 2021, as reported by TienPhong.vn In addition to a strong GPA and extracurricular involvement, possessing international English certificates has become a fundamental requirement for university applications abroad.
In recent years, Vietnamese universities have shifted their enrollment strategies to include a combination of international English certificates and university test scores, impacting a significant portion of admissions—ranging from 40% at the National Economic University to 50% at the Foreign Trade University in 2021 This approach presents a valuable opportunity for students with average academic performance to gain admission to prestigious institutions, contrasting with the traditional admissions process that often favors only high-achieving students.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Definition of international English certificates
A certificate, as defined by Collins, is an official document that verifies the truth of various facts, including birth, marital status, and academic achievements According to Canadian news site BDC, international English language certification standards establish the necessary requirements for English learning processes to ensure consistent quality across countries The April International website highlights that many English certificates assess language abilities in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing To achieve specific goals, it's crucial to select the appropriate English language test, considering factors like universal recognition, scoring systems, test formats, and registration fees, which are essential for understanding the main language proficiency tests available.
Kinds of international English certificates
There are several different exams for English as a foreign language, and the exam candidates choose to take depends on their academic and professional goals
The recent report by Cambridge Assessment English highlights that the IELTS, or International English Language Testing System, is a globally recognized standardized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers.
Established in 1989 by IDP Education, IELTS is one of the leading English language proficiency tests globally It offers an academic version tailored for educational and professional contexts, and is recognized as a valid proof of language skills for various work permits and immigration processes.
The TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a widely recognized international certification administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) This exam assesses English language proficiency specifically in academic settings, making it essential for non-native speakers pursuing higher education in English-speaking environments (Courtney Montgomery, 2017).
TOEFL scores play a crucial role in the admissions process for universities, serving as a key indicator of English proficiency The test is essential for individuals seeking to demonstrate their English skills for various educational opportunities, including applications to foreign high schools, exchange programs, community colleges, and student visas.
The TOEFL test evaluates English proficiency in an academic context, making it a key criterion for university admissions It features reading passages that utilize formal academic language and sophisticated vocabulary, distinguishing it from more casual English usage Similar to the IELTS, the TOEFL comprises four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
The TOEIC, or Test of English for International Communication, is a widely recognized standardized English test that is particularly suited for professional and corporate environments According to the EF Blog, this test is preferred over academic language assessments because it evaluates practical communication skills Employers globally utilize the TOEIC to identify candidates who can proficiently engage with colleagues and clients in English, transcending borders and cultural differences.
The TOEIC offers two distinct assessments: the Receptive English test, which evaluates reading and listening skills, and the Productive English test, focusing on speaking and writing abilities Students have the option to take either one or both TOEIC tests based on their individual requirements.
This recent research has begun to provide several well-known international certificates that are commonly used in college exams for students.
The relationship between international English certificates and college admission
In recent years, university admission opportunities have expanded significantly, with various methods such as high school graduation exam results, academic records, and competency assessments gaining popularity Additionally, the increased use of English proficiency certificates has become a key factor for students, parents, and educators alike, enhancing the connection between international English certifications and college admissions.
Do Van Dung (2021), the headteacher of HCMUTE, emphasized that university admission based on international foreign language certificates is essential, as it motivates Vietnamese students to enhance their language skills Similarly, Le Thu Hien, a teacher at Truong Dinh High School, noted that despite regional disparities in high school assessments, directly recruiting candidates with international language certificates is a positive step These certificates are reliable and evaluate all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—ensuring objectivity and confirming the candidates' language proficiency.
While high scores in English certificates like IELTS can be beneficial, it is crucial to enhance global knowledge and develop soft skills such as communication and problem-solving Minh Hai, vice-rector of Ngo Gia Dinh University, emphasized that language is merely a communication tool; effective conversations with foreigners depend on more than just language proficiency Thus, IELTS should be viewed as a certification of communication ability Additionally, a solid knowledge base is vital for job hunting and expanding professional networks.
Students' English proficiency is typically assessed through English certificates, with various universities setting distinct standards for accepting these foreign qualifications For example, institutions focused on economics tend to demand higher language scores compared to those in the technology sector.
Reasons why students choose to use international English certificates to get
In recent years, the trend of requiring English certificates for university admissions has gained significant attention from both students and parents Understanding how to effectively utilize these certificates is essential for prospective applicants Consequently, extensive research has been conducted to explore the benefits that English certifications offer in the admissions process.
In today's developed economy, English proficiency is essential for securing high-paying jobs, as many positions require strong communication and writing skills Employees who excel in English become invaluable assets to their companies, distinguishing themselves from those lacking these skills This demand for English competency drives individuals to prioritize enhancing their language abilities, with English certificates serving as a testament to their qualifications.
Tran Huu Chung, vice president of Gia Dinh University, emphasizes that obtaining an international foreign language certificate is becoming a crucial trend in university admissions, offering candidates increased opportunities Similarly, Tran Khac Thac, vice president of training at Thuy Loi University, highlights the importance of high school students dedicating time to improve their foreign language skills alongside traditional subjects like Math and Literature This preparation is vital as the ASEAN labor market opens, where individuals lacking English proficiency may struggle in domestic competition Consequently, possessing an English certificate not only enhances university admission prospects but also provides a competitive edge in future job searches.
Students with English certificates can be exempted from English exams, alleviating unnecessary stress and maintaining academic quality This exemption allows students to focus on other subjects, potentially leading to higher scores in university entrance exams Thanh Tung, a student from Le Quy Don High School, noted in 2020, “I already had an IELTS certificate and I will take advantage of this to be exempted from the foreign language exam The high school graduation exam has many exam subjects; if you can reduce one exam, it will reduce pressure.” Additionally, in certain university majors, possessing English certificates can exempt students from several English-related credits, enabling them to dedicate more time to other subjects or part-time work.
Many top universities now require English certificates as part of their admission criteria, leading to a higher percentage of students gaining entry with these qualifications According to Le Dinh Tung (2021), Head of Training Management at Hanoi Medical University, approximately 10% of admission targets include additional English certificate requirements, allowing students with such certificates to achieve lower scores—by about 2 to 3 points—compared to those without This trend is evident not only at Hanoi Medical University but also at other prestigious institutions like the National Economics University and the Foreign Trade University of Hanoi, where possessing an English certificate can significantly enhance a student's chances of passing entrance exams.
In today's competitive academic landscape, students increasingly prioritize obtaining English certificates as a crucial requirement for university admissions Furthermore, it is essential for students to improve their English skills to enhance their prospects for university acceptance and future employment opportunities.
The effects of choosing to use English certificates to get into universities
In recent years, numerous universities have adopted international English certificates as a key criterion for admission, recognizing their various benefits This essay will outline the significant positive impacts of implementing such standardized assessments in the admissions process.
Many believe that passing a university entrance exam is easier than relying solely on college exam scores, with international English certificates accounting for 30% to 40% of the admission criteria This means that students with such certificates only need to concentrate on two additional subjects to gain university admission, significantly saving time in the application process Furthermore, top universities like FTU, NEU, and HUST are increasingly recognizing international English certificates as part of their admission requirements, thereby expanding opportunities for students aiming for prestigious institutions.
Obtaining an international English certificate significantly increases a student's chances of securing a scholarship at universities, as it demonstrates their proficiency in English High scores on these tests not only boost students' confidence in using the language but also encourage them to invest time in practicing English This dedication ultimately helps them achieve their desired scores, opening doors to greater academic opportunities.
International English certificates serve as a testament to students' dedication and hard work, as evidenced by high scores that indicate thorough preparation for the exam These certificates assess not only English proficiency but also the ability to navigate real-life situations, thereby enhancing problem-solving skills and reflecting practical applications of language abilities.
Possessing international English certificates has countless positive effects not only in entering universities but also in the future Therefore, students should own those because of the given effects.
Although having an international English certificate could provide countless positive effects, there are some negative effects that students should pay attention to.
Many students struggle to balance their preparation for international English certificates with their other academic subjects due to the unique question formats of these exams, which require significant time for both study and familiarization This challenge often makes it difficult for them to concentrate on specific goals, as they aim to excel in both their English certifications and high school graduation exams but lack the necessary time to meet both objectives effectively.
Repeatedly taking the IELTS test can lead to significant time and financial losses for students who fail to meet their target score For instance, a student aiming for a band score of 6.5 but only achieving 6.0 may incur an additional cost of nearly 5 million for retaking the exam.
The rising trend of obtaining international English certificates has led many parents to pressure their children into taking these exams, resulting in increased student stress Students lacking English proficiency may experience depression and poor outcomes Additionally, the demand for these certificates has given rise to numerous cram centers that offer low-quality teaching tips and lessons aimed at achieving high scores.
That is the reason why sometimes the students who achieve high scores in international English certificates are not as good at English as the lower ones.
In summary, utilizing international English certificates for university admissions offers numerous advantages; however, potential drawbacks also exist Therefore, it is essential for students and parents to conduct thorough research and consider these factors carefully to mitigate any negative impacts.
