Website: www.eemc.com.vn INSTRUCTION MANUAL BUCHHOLZ RELAY TYPE BR-l HYODA INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION I Introduction Installed between a transformer and a conservator, the Buchholtz relay detects the gas and the steam generated inside the transformer at a trouble and triggers an alarm and trip signal to safeguard the transformer The relay is also used for daily inspection and maintenance At a minor trouble When the gas produced by a trouble inside the transformer reaches a certain level, the 1st stage contact point gives an alarm At an instantaneous major trouble The 2nd stage trip contact is operated by accelerated oil flow from the transformer to the conservator 0il level control Oil level and gas level can be observed(controlled)directly through the sight glass 4.Gas analysis Accumulated gas in the relay can be extracted through the gas vent valve or sampled for gas analysis II Composition The Buchholtz relay comprises the terminals unit, the microswitchs operating unit, a casing containing two floats (gas accumulator) and a bulkhead (flange)to transfer float motion to the switchs unit with the magnets and the casing is provided with a sight glass for oil level observation and the flange with a gas vent valve and a float locking mechanism to safeguard the floats III Principle of operation Operation of the 1st stage alarm contact The relay is filled with oil When gas is accumulated by a trouble in the transformer, the oil level comes down to lower the float for alarm Reaching a specified level, the accumulated gas operates the 1st stage contact (microswitch) through the bulkhead then to trigger an alarm signal Operation of the 2nd stage trip contact At major trouble in the transformer, a large quantity of gas is produced and the oil moves toward the conservator accordingly When a specified flow rate is reached, the 2nd stage contact point (microswitch) is operated by the pushed down float for tripping to trigger a trip signal The 2nd stage contact doesn't operate without oil flow even when the relay is filled with a large amount of gas because the gas goes out to the conservator through the pipe before the contact point operates Restored normal oil level resets the contact (microswitch) to open together with the float Operational specifications of the contact point and the electrical rating are shown in Table and Table respectively Type Table-l Operational Specifications of Contact 1st Stage Gas 2nd Stage oil D C H Accumulation Flow G1 130 105 15 G2 155 120 19 G3 130 105 15 G4 155 120 19 50 ± cm/sec 450 ± 10 cc 100 wires by opening the cover of the terminal box Screw size of the terminals is M5 After connecting the wires, tighten the cover firmly with a packing attached Refrain from opening the terminal board and the terminal box itself as the bottom of the terminal box is made to a sealed structure containing microswitches and magnets 3) Float locking mechanism The float locking mechanism is attached to fix the floats for protection at inspection and transportation Operate the locking mechanism as stated below Detail of float locking mechanism (1) Take off the covering cap (2) Insert the section marked minus of the covering cap into the shaft fully ~o the end (about mm of insertion) and turn the red point to the position of ACT or LOCK When the red point is set at the right position, the shaft comes out of itself by about mm, and doesn't turn unless it is pushed in (3) For transportation, be sure to set the red point at LOCK'position (4) For operation of the transformer be sure to set the point at ACT position Otherwise, the floats are fixed and the contact points can't be closed (5) Checking motion of contact points Check motion of the contact points while mounting the locking mechanism onto the relay So long as the oil level in the relay is normal, the contact points are closed when the red point is set at LOCK position as shown above and opened when set at ACT position Check motion of the contact points by repeating the operation two to three timea After operating, make sure that the red point is at the right position, then tighten the covering cap to the original position 4) Gas vent valve Use the gas vent valve to sample accumulated gas at a trouble or to extract the gas Take off the guard cap and open/close the valve by turning the shaft section marked minus (-) After using the valve, be sure to close it fully, and attach the guard cap to the original position 5) Sight glass The sight glass is graduated as illustrated at right Use the scale for checking gas level, 300 float motion, and other day-to-day inspection ... 1 05 15 G4 155 120 19 50 ± cm/sec 450 ± 10 cc 100 ± 10 cm/sec Table-2 Electrical Rating of Contact Resistance load Inductive load AC 1
