email regarding program requirements, deadlines, etc All email messages will be sent to your official TAMU email address The Business Honors Weekly Update is sent out early each week to keep you informed of upcoming professional development events, academic and scholarship opportunities, internship and employment opportunities, and other noteworthy Business Honors highlights for the week You are responsible for reviewing the Weekly Update and taking action as necessary The Weekly Update will be sent from honors2@mays.tamu.edu ECAMPUS eCampus is an online platform used by most professors to communicate with their students, record grades, and share course information Business Honors utilizes eCampus for announcements, Professional Development (PD) information, and program materials This is also where you submit blurbs for PD event credit You can access eCampus through Howdy using your Net ID and password It is your responsibility to learn how to access and utilize eCampus If you IN TOUCH WITH US BH BASICS BH @ A GLANCE To be in good standing, meet program requirements, and graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Honors, you must: Read, acknowledge, and adhere to the Business Honors Code of Conduct Maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA Complete the courses required for the major, including the BUSN 484 Internship Attend at least four Professional Development events each year Complete a Portfolio or Signature Work project Attend the annual All BH Meeting Read and complete the summer reading assignment each year CODE OF CONDUCT Developed by Business Honors students in 2018, the Business Honors Code of Conduct outlines the guiding principles and expectations for Business Honors students during their time at Texas A&M University It serves as a “standard of excellence and integrity within and outside of Mays Business School.” Incoming students are required to sign an acknowledgement (located in eCampus) stating you have read and understand the Code of Conduct Do not approach signing the Acknowledgement Statement as if it were a Terms and Conditions statement on a website You will be held accountable for following the standards it contains See the full Business Honors Code of Conduct in the Appendix GPA REQUIREMENT You are required to maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA For further information about this requirement, please see page REQUIRED COURSES Your BHNR major requires 30 credit hours of honors level coursework, which consists of hours of required courses, 15 hours of business electives, and hours of elective options Additionally, you are required to complete an internship For more information on required coursework, please see pages 7-9 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Attending a minimum of four Professional Development (PD) events each academic year is an academic requirement of the program Failure to attend at least four events each year will result in dismissal from the program For more information, please see pages 10-14 PORTFOLIO (C/O 2021 & EARLIER) Your portfolio is a place to develop and document your learning from freshman to senior year in the Business Honors Program You will gather materials and reflect on your learning, strengths, goals, and accomplishments Your online portfolio is not meant to function as a professional or public tool though you may choose to use it that way but rather as a personal collection and documentation of your growth and development You will receive more information and direction on developing your online portfolio in BUSN 125 Any questions concerning your portfolio should be directed to your advisors or the director SIGNATURE WORK (C/O 2022 & LATER) Through a culminating experience - or signature work- you will synthesize the knowledge and skills you have gained through your coursework, co-curricular activities, internships, study abroad, and other related experiences by applying your learning to an important real-world issue You will choose the topic and form of your project Over the course of multiple semesters, you will work independently with a faculty/advisor coach to put together a capstone project you will present during your senior year ALL BH MEETING You will attend an All Business Honors Meeting each fall semester This meeting covers various critical updates and announcements related to Business Honors requirements and procedures for the current academic year There are two time options available, but you only need to go to one To remain in good standing with the Business Honors Program, you must attend this meeting This is considered an academic requirement of the program With the exception of an academic conflict, no absences are excused SUMMER READING All leaders are readers To support and help you develop this habit, Business Honors has a summer reading component The program will provide you with a short list of recommendations and will purchase your selection If you not submit your book selection to Business Honors, you will need to purchase a book from the recommendation list yourself Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers Harry S Truman After completing your reading, you will compose a short reflection of key takeaways from the book and upload it to your online portfolio Business Honors staff will review your reflection in your portfolio STAY IN TOUCH WITH US ACADEMICS GPA REQUIREMENT You are required to maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average This is the standard set for all honors students at Texas A&M University, and it is the threshold students must meet to be eligible to take honors classes and earn a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Honors MEETING WITH YOUR ADVISOR Business Honors is your academic major and you are expected to regularly meet with your Business Honors advisor Your advisor will assist you with navigating your degree plan, course scheduling, graduation requirements, and program requirements Advisors will publish walk-in advising and individual appointment schedules each semester You can use NAVIGATE to schedule an appointment online with them You should meet with your advisor at least once a semester, however, you may choose to meet more often Working with your advisor allows you to make informed and intentional decisions about your academic plan The program director is available for appointments as well NAVIGATE/MAKING AN APPOINTMENT NAVIGATE is an online platform you will use to connect with campus resources, including the Business Honors advisors and director To make an appointment: Log into Howdy Go to the My Record tab Go to the Advising Appointments block on the right side of the page Select NAVIGATE – Schedule Advising Appointments Once in NAVIGATE, select Get Assistance Follow the prompts to select an appointment type, advisor, and time Director: BUSN 125 Meeting, Internship, Program Requirements, Signature Work Advisor: Any appointment type (excluding BUSN 125 Meeting) Each BH staff member has a link to NAVIGATE in their email signature PROBATION AND DISMISSAL POLICY At the conclusion of each fall and spring semester, your student record will be reviewed to ensure you continue to meet the required 3.5 cumulative GPA minimum Please note your cumulative GPA, not your semester GPA, is reviewed If your cumulative GPA is 3.5 or greater, you are considered to be in good academic standing with Business Honors If your cumulative GPA is below a 3.5, you will be offered academic probation OR dismissed from Business Honors, according the chart below Note: Seniors (including rising seniors) who are on academic and/or program requirement probation must have a second major on their record You will be contacted via email if your status in Business Honors changes FIRST TIME BELOW Business Honors at Mays Business School is a challenging, discovery-driven program and academic major As an academic major, the curriculum components listed on pages 7-9 are required The BHNR major requires 30 hours of honors level coursework, which consists of hours of required courses, 15 hours of business electives, and hours of elective options Additionally, you are required to complete an you are eligible to receive Latin Honors from the university Latin Honors are awarded as follows: SUMMA CUM LAUDE MAGNA CUM LAUDE CUM LAUDE 3.900-4.000 3.700-3.899 3.500-3.699 All students awarded Latin Honors are provided with a yellow stole and are allowed to wear it over their gown at graduation ALUMNI INFORMATION Once you have graduated from Texas A&M University, there are several ways to stay in touch and involved with the Business Honors program Most importantly, you will complete an exit survey in your graduating semester to provide contact information and employment or graduate freshman and sophomore students for their achievements Through a self-nomination process, the award is presented annually to two freshmen and two sophomores who display exceptional promise If you are eligible for this award and would like further information, please visit launch.tamu.edu or speak to your advisor about requirements and information BROWN RUDDER AWARD The Brown-Rudder Award honors an outstanding senior student who exemplifies the leadership, patriotism, fortitude, courage, humility, love of Texas A&M University, and willingness to uphold the principles for which Texas A&M stands as vividly exemplified by James Earl Rudder during his lifetime No more than two Brown-Rudder awardees are selected at Texas A&M each year The award is presented at the LAUNCH recognition ceremony and commanded the historic Pointe du Hoc battle during the invasion of Normandy in World War II and served as the 16th President of Texas A&M University (1959-1970) GATES-MULLER AWARD The Gates-Muller Award was established to provide public recognition to an outstanding senior graduating from Texas A&M who has demonstrated qualities of leadership, patriotism, courage, and service to country, school, and nation so clearly exemplified by Robert M Gates The award is presented at the LAUNCH recognition ceremony and announced at the commencement exercise(s) of the honorees college at Texas A&M President of Texas A&M University LOUDDER MEDAL OF EXCELLENCE The Loudder Medal of Excellence is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional development of themselves and others through reflective Students looking to gain some real-world experience before pursuing an MBA have the option to apply for early admission to MBA programs across the country Some of the most prestigious schools in the nation - including Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, and others - offer students the chance to enroll in an MBA program and spend a few years in the workforce before they actually begin attending classes If you are interested in these programs, have a conversation with your advisor about which school is right for you FELLOWSHIPS National Fellowships help to facilitate a student's educational, professional, and personal development through unique and rewarding experiences Participating in the National Fellowships process often gives students deeper insights into who they are and what is most important to them The Fulbright and Rhodes scholar programs are examples of fellowships, but there are many other opportunities available Please see launch.tamu.edu or speak with your advisor for more information FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR Designed to foster a global mindset and encourage international relationships, the Fulbright U.S Student Program sends students around the world to develop connections and community around the globe, while continuing their education This cultural exchange offers an appreciation for other perspectives and a unique oldest and most celebrated international fellowships in the world, the Rhodes Scholarship is designed to offer 32 students from the United States a chance to further their education at the University used by Business Honors students, should equip you with the knowledge and comfort of any type of business dress code 21 SCHOLARSHIPS STAY IN TOUCH WITH US UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS The University Scholarship Application is available each year between October and February for currently enrolled students at Texas A&M This application provides access to consideration for university-wide in the Weekly Update as we are made aware 22 APPENDIX BUSINESS HONORS CODE OF CONDUCT 23 CODE STAYOF INCONDUCT TOUCH WITH US INTRODUCTION Business Honors (BH) at Texas A&M is an elite academic institution dedicated to fostering an environment that both challenges and holistically shapes the students and also sows and cultivates the seeds of life-long friendships. While enrolled in this program, students are relied upon to respect the dignity of their peers and professors and to reflect the core values of Texas A&M in their daily actions PURPOSE We the students of Mays Business Honors accept and allow this document to establish a set of guiding principles for the members of the Mays Business Honors program and to outline the expectations of these members in various settings This Code of Conduct created by students, for students, will hereby serve as a standard of excellence and integrity within and outside of Mays Business School Student’s Mission: Through engaging and informative educational programs which relentlessly pursue and consistently exhibit excellence, Business Honors at Texas A&M University strives to nurture young leaders in mind, body, and spirit, further equipping them to serve others with humility and to run with gratitude and boldness throughout life’s journey ACADEMIC INTEGRITY All students are required to adhere to the Aggie Code of Honor: “An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do.” The following outlines in further detail expectations for each student in regards to academic integrity Lying: Students are expected to be above reproach in dealing honestly with instructors and administrators Lying to instructors and administrators includes, but is not limited to: acquiring completed assignments and essays from other students or online and submitting the assignment as one’s own work; misrepresenting facts, including false grades or ingenuine resumes, for the purpose of obtaining an academic advantage; or falsifying research data, laboratory reports, and/or any other academic work offered for credit 24 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY (CONT.) Cheating: In a collaborative environment like Mays Business School, it can be easy to blur the line between helping one another and cheating However, while collaboration is encouraged when applicable, students are expected to follow all guidelines outlined by instructors, to ask clarifying questions when the level of cooperation allowed is ambiguous, and to ensure one’s academic success is ultimately due to one’s own efforts Cheating includes, but is not limited to: copying from another student’s test, essay, or assignment unless specifically allowed; using unauthorized materials during a quiz or test, such as notes, computers, or books; using, buying, or soliciting the contents of unadministered tests, test keys, or assignment solutions; working with other students on an assignment when such collaboration is prohibited; divulging the contents of an exam with students who will take the exam, or for use by future students - including providing test questions and exam information to third parties when the instructor prohibits it; or using GroupMe and other forms of communication to share test questions or answers to other assignments, unless specifically allowed by an instructor Stealing: In an academic setting, stealing can take many forms Students are expected to acquire all class materials through legally acceptable means that also meet any requirements set forth by instructors Stealing includes, but is not limited to: taking from an instructor class materials not given to students, such as exams and answer keys; using harvard cases and other class materials bought by other students without purchasing the materials; or copying, photographing, and distributing textbook pages and other materials in violation of copyright laws Tolerating Those Who Do: An often overlooked portion of the Aggie Code of Honor, it is imperative in maintaining a culture of academic excellence, collaboration, and achievement free from academic dishonesty that students hold one another to the same high standard of academic integrity Students are expected to take appropriate actions, such as reporting violations to the Aggie Honor System Office, and to hold other students accountable to these standards, specifically when encountering instances of academic dishonesty 25 RESPECT (EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS) As members of a competitive Honors program, students are held to a high standard It is the responsibility of students to represent the program in a positive light while attending Texas A&M University Students are expected to abide by the core values of the university - leadership, loyalty, excellence, integrity, selfless service, and respect - in everything they The following outlines expectations in settings students will commonly find themselves Interactions with Advisors: Business Honors advisors work to ensure academic success and guidance for nearly 400 students Thus, it is the expectation that students will be respectful of their time Scheduling appointments or attending posted office hours is the best way to speak to an advisor For easier questions, emails can be sent However, students should allow adequate time for an advisor to respond to their concerns Interactions with Faculty: Students are expected to adhere to the attendance policies outlined in their syllabi When attending class, it is expected that students are active participants in class, respectful with their use of technology, and respectful of their professors time It is to be understood that faculty and professors are busy, and their time is valuable Students should be respectful with their use of email and attending office hours Interactions with Students: Students are expected to treat their peers with tolerance, kindness, and respect, both in and out of the classroom All students are part of the Aggie Family, so this expectation applies to students both in and outside of the BH program This expectation of respect extends to social media platforms, especially during interactions with other Business Honors students in groups such as GroupMe or class facebook groups The purpose of these is to connect, not to promote alienating opinions or offensive comments towards others Interactions with Staff: Students will receive weekly communications from the program directors and coordinators as well as student staff members The same expectations of respect and timeliness holds true The Business Honors staff is working to ensure the betterment of the program, and students should aid them in this goal 26 TRIPS Students of Business Honors have the privilege of participating in real world, external opportunities, such as study abroad trips, company visits, and professional development events, and are expected to uphold the highest level of professionalism, reflecting well on Texas A&M University During such trips, students are expected to: dress appropriately, following established guidelines for professional wear; arrive promptly and be prepared; treat employees, speakers, and guest with the utmost respect both in oral and written communication; and refrain from activities that might prove harmful to the facility where the event is taking place, including but not limited to: chewing gum, eating, and drinking colored beverages, unless provided during the event RECRUITING Business Honors students participating in recruitment for internships or full-time employment will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines: Provide an accurate representation of themselves: Students will provide only complete and true information in their resumes, interviews, salary negotiations, and all other interactions with potential employers regarding their experience, awards and honors, academic performance, and skills Fulfill commitments: Students are expected to show up at interviews, office visits, and all other recruitment events they have committed to attend, and so in a timely manner If a student wishes to reschedule or cancel an interview, he or she must so in a respectful and timely manner Pursue a position only if interested: Students are expected to go through the application and interview process only for companies for which he or she is genuinely interested in working If a student wishes to gain practicing interviewing, he or she may so through the Communications Lab or other Career Services events Stop recruiting upon accepting an offer: Students will withdraw from consideration from all employers with whom they are recruiting immediately upon accepting an offer of employment Follow all rules and laws: At recruitment events, students are expected to follow all venue rules and state and federal laws, including those regarding alcohol consumption Practice good etiquette: Students are expected to dress appropriately, correspond politely, and behave professionally throughout the recruitment process Students will act in a way that is respectful to all company representatives, career services employees, and fellow students. When in doubt, seek help: If a student is unsure of the most ethical way to approach a decision in the recruitment process, he or she can contact the Texas A&M Career Center, the Mays Career Services Office, or a Business Honors staff member 27 PD EVENTS Students are required to attend four professional development events per year in order to remain in good standing with Business Honors Student participation in these events comes with the expectation that they will be respectful of their fellow students and those putting on the events Reservations for a PD event will be done in the method specified in the weekly update Cancellations for a PD event should also be done through the link in the weekly update However, it should be noted, that cancellations should only be done in the case of emergencies or unavoidable conflicts When possible, cancellations should be done with at least 48 hours notice This ensures that fellow students have an opportunity to participate in events Registering for multiple events with the intention to “hold your spot” is considered unethical Participation in a PD event comes with the expectation of appropriate dress and behavior Dress styles shall be defined as the following: College casual: whatever you regularly wear to class Yard work casual: get ready to some work! Sharp casual: at a minimum, nice jeans and a dress shirt Business casual: Men - slacks, button down or polo, dress shoes, and belt; Women - slacks or skirt, dress shirt in a solid color, heels or closed toe flats Business professional: Men - matching suit with tie and dress shoes; Women neutral blouse and heels During a PD event, students are expected to: arrive on time and stay for the entirety of the event; sign in upon arrival; ask questions and actively participate; eat an appropriate amount of the food provided; and introduce themselves to the speaker(s) To obtain credit for PD events, students should submit blurbs, thank you notes, or other forms of credit only for events that they have signed up for and attended in their entirety Professional development is an integral part of each student’s degree program, and any attempt to misrepresent one’s attendance at these events is considered unethical and a form of academic dishonesty DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE Failure to adhere to the rules and policies currently existing and those henceforth set by this document will lead to a review of BH membership at the discretion of the Director of Business Honors 28 CONCLUSION The vision of this document is to put into writing the elite standards of excellence, humility, and integrity that already exist among members of the Mays Business Honors Program While this Code of Conduct establishes a solid foundation of guiding principles for the Mays Business Honors Program, it should remain a dynamic document that reflects the rapidly changing environment around us and adapts to the needs of the BH program For this document to effectively serve as a guide for the preservation of the invaluable principles present in the Business Honors culture at Texas A&M, we must fully grasp and live by the values and standards set forth in this writing. If we not intend to live by the vision and conditions outlined in this pact, we should withhold consent However, if we proffer consent, it should be with the aim of acting in integrity under its requisites AMENDMENT PROCESS If changes to this document become necessary, amendments or additions may be proposed to the Program Director Developed by Business Honors students in 2018 29
