SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 Outstanding Section Award Outstanding Activity Award The Annual Report is the Business Report for the Section and must be received before a Section can receive its rebate for the next year It covers activities from June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014 Although any member can aid in filling out the report, submission can only be made by the serving chair of the section year listed above Supporting materials such as newsletters, programs, advertising, etc may be attached, but the total pages should be no more than 12 ( excluding the outstanding section and activity awards which can be two pages each), and must all be in one document (it may mean that the entire report is submitted in pdf format) Larger or extra pieces of supporting material, such as newsletters, multiple flyers, banquet programs, etc should be archived on the section’s SharePoint site with links in the report document as needed This report must be submitted by May 30, 2014 in order to be Describe how funds are raised, and how scholarships are awarded Public Policy (This section may be copied as needed for use in the Public Policy Award Form) Describe activities that inform the public and section members about public policy The Wichita Public Policy (PP) chair very actively communicates with his local company legislative affairs focal on AIAA public policy matters, for situational awareness on both sides and for review/comment/opinion in crafing key issue topics for CVD In turn, the company focal very actively works with counterparts in Wichita to work with the state and national legislatures on behalf of the Kansas aerospace industry Last fall, the Wichita PP chair began working with the national AIAA State Affairs Working Group, and he held a meeting with the director of the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University a person who is well-versed in working with both state and national legislatures to push aviation matters to communicate specific AIAA initiatives and also to gather guidance on how to most effectively work with the legislatures Describe activities that provided interaction with government officials The Wichita section participated in CVD, and more indirectly the Wichita PP chair, who is also a member of the AIAA national Public Policy Committee, Aeronautics Subcommittee, was actively involved in drafing the national CVD key issue on technology transition as well as pre-briefing the national CVD participants on that issue in the CVD “training” sessions Did your section participate in Congressional Visits Day or All Aerospace Is Local? If so, describe Yes, the Wichita PP chair along with five students from the University of Kansas participated in CVD Team Kansas was pictured in Aerospace America in the April and May 2014 issues The team conducted visits with all four House representatives and two senators from Kansas, and effectively communicated the key issues most relevant to the Kansas aerospace industry Honors and Awards Describe any local section awards given to members and supporters Please note if award is new this year List members nominated by the section for AIAA or regional honors and awards Please include nominee, award, and status a Section members Laurette Lahey, Michael Thacker, and Kyle Wetzel were nominated for AIAA Associate Fellow Judging will take place over the summer and results will be announced next fall Technical Activities How many local members are members of an AIAA Technical Committee? Statement of the mission and goals of the section How is your section functioning within the mission and goals of the AIAA? AIAA's mission is to inspire and advance the future of Aerospace for the benefit of humanity and the Wichita section fully supports that goal by hosting dinner meetings which are aimed mainly at aerospace professionals but which are open to the public Statement of philosophy of use of funds (both through rebates and other means) How are financial resources used by the section? How you think the funds are best utilized? Our funds are used for three main purposes: First, to help subsidize dinner meetings to bring in speakers we believe will be of interest to our members; second, to fund travel expenses for our members to events that benefit the section or the general public (eg Regional Leadership Conference and Congressional Visit Day); and third, to fund awards for students developing skills that are applicable to the aerospace industry (Kansas BEST and the Wichita State University Engineering Open House) Please describe any challenges or problems that arose during the year (or that are ongoing) and how the section dealt with them For the third year in a row our previous Section Vice Chair moved out of Wichita before being able to accede to the position of Section Chair In addition our Secretary moved shortly afer his election to his position Please describe how your section is responding to its unique circumstances and how it is making a difference In other words, why should this be an Outstanding Section? For the past several years our previous Section Chair stayed on his position as there was nobody willing to step up to replace him As mentioned in the response to Question 3, our Vice Chair again was unable to run for election as Section Chair so I ran for Section Chair in his place and was elected We also recruited new members to run for Vice Chair and Secretary We also had new members appointed to Programs Officer, Membership Office, and Young Professional Officer While some of the previous members of the Section Council made themselves available to us for support, we moved forward largely on our own It has been a very successful year and next year our current Vice Chair will be moving up to Section Chair, our Programs Chair will be moving to Vice Chair, and our Membership Officer will be moving up to Secretary We are hoping that over the summer we will also be able to more fully fill out our appointed officer positions The past few years have been tumultuous for our section with layoffs continuing to take their toll on our membership but we are hopeful that a level of relative stability has now arrived and our new core of younger members will help our section grow even more in the future ... two pages.)
