SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 Outstanding Section Award Outstanding Activity Award The Annual Report is the Business Report for the Section and must be received before a Section can receive its rebate for the next year It covers activities from June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012 Although any member can aid in filling out the report, submission can only be made by the serving chair of the section year listed above Supporting materials such as newsletters, programs, advertising, etc may be attached, but the total pages should be no more than 12 (excluding the outstanding section and activity awards which can be two pages each), and must all be in one document (it may mean that the entire report is submitted in pdf format) Larger or extra pieces of supporting material, such as newsletters, multiple flyers, banquet programs, etc should be archived on the section’s SharePoint site with links in the report document as needed This report must be submitted by June 30, 2012 in order to be etc) Also include the focus (young professional, public policy, technical, workforce development, STEM K-12, etc or just general), any publicity used for the event, and if it was jointly sponsored and if so, by whom We had three general section events, each technical in nature: a 8/25/2011: The Challenge of Testing NextGen by Dr Wilson Felder from the FAA This was a dinner meeting held at the Marriott hotel, Wichita The speaker was sponsored using funds from the AIAA Distinguished Lecturer program Attendance was 28 b 10/27/2011: High Power Rocketry by Steve Klausmeyer held at the Cessna Conference Center This was an informal presentation including basics of propulsion, aerodynamics, and stability and control He had examples of model hardware on display and showed launch videos The event was very well attended by about 90 people Many of the attendees were not AIAA members We departed slightly from our normal dinner meeting format and brought in Subway sandwiches, chips and drinks funded entirely by the section Flyer is included as Attachment B, below c 11/17/2011 Dinner Meeting: Hawker Beechcraft Test Pilot and Manager Dan “Shaka” Hinson “AT-6 “Coyote” Development: Flight Test of Light Attack Capabilities.” Held at the Ryan’s Steakhouse, Wichita Attendance was 45 Flyer is included as Attachment C, below Also of note was a planned event for Jan 2012 that had to be cancelled at the last minute due to technical difficulties Six members who gave conference papers at the Aerospace Sciences meeting agreed to reprise their talks two weeks after the conference We intended to tie-in membership via WebEx at three locations: Wichita, Lawrence, and Manhattan Unfortunately, as noted, we ran into difficulties and cancelled the meeting With the opportunity lost it was not rescheduled I want to try this again in Jan 2013, as it is a good way to tie in membership outside of Wichita We supported the Annual meeting of the Wichita Council of Engineering Societies in Feb, 2012 The speaker was John Tomblin, Executive Director of the National Institute of Aviation Research: “Aviation and NIAR: Did you Know?” We coordinated with a Wichita State Student section meeting who hosted a Distinguished Lecturer talk be Dr Walt Silva “Innovation is No Vacation”, held 4/6/2012 We advertised that meeting to the professional members The AIAA Design/Build/Fly competition flyoff was held April 13-15 in Wichita, and was well support by the section membership The flyoff was coordinated by the Section Chairman, and a large number of section members helped to judge reports, perform technical inspections, and judge the flyoff Approximately 500 students, faculty, and guests attended comprising 57 university teams from across the US, Europe, and the Middle East Membership Activities Describe any membership recruitment/retention activities (this section may be copied as needed for use in the Membership Award Form) a We distributed membership materials at the High Power Rocketry meeting, since it was well attended by nonmembers b We set up a table at the WCES meeting (See attachment D, below) c Distributed AIAA Educator Associate membership applications at Teacher’s Night Out at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson on November 18, 2011 There were an estimated 300 teachers at the event Education List the student branches within the section and describe any section activities related to these branches a Student Branches: Kansas University, Wichita State University, and Kansas State University b Related Section Activities: The professional section sponsors an award for the WSU Engineering Open House Total award is $150 Describe actions taken to establish new student branches Describe involvement of the section with the Region Student Conference a Due to conflicts with the Design/Build/Fly contest, there was no attendance by either student section at the SPC, or by any Wichita Section members Describe any professional continuing education programs (this section may be copied as needed for use in the Career and Workforce Development Award Form) Describe any precollege outreach programs instituted/continued this year (this section may be copied as needed for use in the STEM-K12 Award Form) a The professional section sponsors a contribution to the Kansas BEST foundation Total award is $500 b We also made a $350 contribution to the Great Plains Robotics Alliance 6 Does your section have a scholarship fund? Describe how funds are raised, and how scholarships are awarded Public Policy (This section may be copied as needed for use in the Public Policy Award Form) Describe activities that inform the public and section members about public policy a We have a member who is part of the AIAA Public Policy Committee Describe activities that provided interaction with government officials Did your section participate in Congressional Visits Day or August is for Aerospace? If so, describe a Yes, we sent a representative to CVD: Austin Harper from Spirit Aerospace This was his first attendance at CVD Meetings were held with the Kansas delegation Honors and Awards Describe any local section awards given to members and supporters Please note if award is new this year List members nominated by the section for AIAA or regional honors and awards Please include nominee, award, and status Technical Activities How many local members are members of an AIAA Technical Committee? Describe any section publications other than a newsletter, including content, frequency and distribution How does the section utilize electronic communication, such as email notification, social media (such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter), etc? a The dominant method of communication between the council and membership is via email The following questions are for those sections with active websites Do you use the AIAA SharePoint site to host your section’s homepage? If not, you host a website elsewhere? a Yes, we have a page on the AIAA SharePoint site, but we don’t use it very much How often is the site updated, and you have a webmaster? b Not very often We need to follow-up with our webmaster What is the most utilized feature of the website? Do you use it to promote upcoming section activities? We received an unsolicited contribution in the amount of $3925.00 from Spirit Aerosystems When we inquired we were told that this was intended to go to AIAA national and was given to us by mistake Refund of the contribution to Spirit Aerosystems is pending and will be reflected in the 2012-2013 audit report Were any meetings or functions underwritten or financially supported?
