Dr Robert W Coonrod, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Montana (UM) here, has resigned to accept the position of academic vice-president at the University of Idaho (UI), Moscow, according to UM President Robert T Pantzer Dr Coonrod, 48, assumes his new duties July 1, succeeding Dr H Walter Steffens, who became Idaho’s first academic vice-president in 1961 after 40 years service to the Idaho institution Dr Steffens retires June 30 at 65, Dr Coonrod has been arts-and-sciences dean at UM since 1960 Dr Coonrod's appointment was made by UI President Ernest W Hartung following approval of Dr Coonrod's appointment by the Idaho Board of Regents at its meeting in Pocatello, Idaho, this week Concerning Dr Coonrod’s accomplishments while at UM, Pres Pantzer said, "Dean Coonrod has contributed outstanding service in one of the most difficult and demanding positions at the University Under Dean Coonrod's fine leadership there has been unprecedented growth in both graduate and undergraduate programs of the College of Arts and Sciences We will miss his strength in administrative and academic affairs, but we recognize the move to Idaho is important to his professional future and we wish him every success in his new position." Commenting on his forthcoming move to Idaho, Dr Coonrod said, "My nine years at the University of Montana have been fruitful for me professionally and rewarding for both my family and me I have had a particularly challenging role to play here under the superb leadership of President Pantzer, and the stimulation of a highly qualified faculty Though I look forward to the professional challenge awaiting me, my family and I will miss the U of M and the Missoula community." more ROBERT COONROD TO BECOME PAGE Before joining the UM faculty as arts-and-sciences dean in 1960, Dr Coonrod was chairman of the Arizona State University Department of History His previous academic experience also includes stints at Stanford University and at the U.S Military Academy, West Point Dr Coonrod received his bachelor's degree in 1942 at Southwest Missouri State College He holds two graduate degrees from Stanford, a master's which he received in 1947 and doctorate awarded in 1950 In 1959-60 Dr Coonrod did postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan Center for Study of Higher Education He is one of four American educators awarded the 1959-60 Michigan Fellowships in College Administration Dr Coonrod has been consultant in higher education for the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools from 1959 to date, and during the same period has served as accreditation examiner of the North Central Association and Northwest Association Since 1966 Dr Coonrod has been president of the Western Montana Council, Boy Scouts of America During the Foreign Service Institute's Summer Seminar on the Near East in 1953, Dr Coonrod visited a number of nations including Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Greece and Libya Dr Coonrod has been listed in Who's Who in America since 1962 In 1959 he was one of four "Great Teachers" Selected for Who's Who Among Students by students at Arizona State University Dr Coonrod is married to the former Virginia McGill of Bakersfield, Calif couple has three sons Dr Coonrod is a native of Warrensburg, Mo ### The ...ecus Information Services • University of montana • m iss oul a, montana 59801 *(406) 243-2522 IMMEDIATELY sale/js 3/21/69 state + cs + ROBERT COONROD TO BECOME ACADEMIC VP AT U OF IDAHO MISSOULA,...
