University of Washington Husky Union Building Seattle, Washington, USA Project Data Sheet Specifications Project: University of Washington Husky Union Building Application: Atrium Location: Seattle, WA, USA Size: 10,400 ft² / 966 m² Architect: Perkins + Will Novum Systems Structural AES, TR: The primary vertical members at this 3-story atrium entrance are elliptical glulam columns, which are braced at each floor level using a mixture of tapered elliptical glulam beams and circular steel tubes To minimize the structure at the roof and maximize the views to the sky, Novum used a mixture of mild steel HSS members and stainless steel tension rod bracing to support the glass skylight at the top of the entrance The steel door portal, in combination with stainless steel circular columns, support the tapered glulam beams of the glass canopy Glazing PSG: The point supported insulated glass panels at the front of the faỗade were 10-9 wide, allowing the atrium to be supported with only (3) primary columns and large expanses of open glazing In front of each glulam column was a vertical point supported triple laminated glass fin, with a colored interlayer to achieve a striking shade of blue The glass fins stop just above the point supported glass canopy, which used clear glass with a frit on the #2 surface to create shading A stainless steel trim piece was provided around the edges of the canopy glazing to create a crisp edge Design Solution Novum engineered and built these beautiful canopies and atriums using a mix of wood and steel structural elements along with point supported glazing for the north and southwest entries of the University of Washington Husky Union Building This unique mix of elements create a monumental entrance that pays homage to the dichotomy of woodsy, natural beauty and cutting-edge engineering of the Pacific Northwest pds191-a Novum Structures www.novumstructures.com
