MEMORANDUM January 24, 2017 TO: Members of the Board of Trustees FROM: Nancy L Zimpher, Chancellor SUBJECT: Appointment of Dr Wayne J Riley as President of the State University of New York Downstate Medical University Action Requested The proposed resolution appoints Dr Wayne J Riley as President of the State University of New York Downstate Medical University Resolution I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution: Resolved that the appointment of Dr Wayne J Riley as President of the State University of New York Downstate Medical University, effective on or about April 3, 2017, be, and hereby is, approved Dr Riley will receive a salary of $500,000 per year from State appropriated funds and $175,000 per year from the campus foundation Dr Riley will also receive a $7,500/month housing allowance and either use of a campus automobile or automobile allowance Background I recommend that Dr Wayne J Riley be appointed President of the State University of New York Downstate Medical University Dr Wayne Riley is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Healthcare Management, Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University He is the immediate past President of the American College of Physicians, an international organization of 148,000 internal medicine specialists and subspecialists He was the 10th President and Chief Executive Officer of Meharry Medical College (January 2007 until July 2013) He previously served as the Vice-President, Vice Dean for Health Affairs and Governmental Relations, and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas He joined the faculty there after completing residency training in Baylor’s internal medicine residency training program Board Resolution -2- November 3, 2016 Dr Riley, an academic primary general internist, has had 25 years of progressively increasing and significant senior level management, policy and leadership experiences in academic medicine, patient care, research administration, academic health center administration, health care management, health policy, biotechnology, the corporate sector, government service, advocacy and organized medicine He is well versed in healthcare management and policy, is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Medicine (previously the Institute of Medicine) of the National Academy of Sciences, a Master of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Society of Medical Administrators (SOMA), an organization composed of the nation’s top 50 physician executives He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the National Board of Medical Examiners Dr Riley earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in anthropology (concentration in Medical Anthropology) from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut; a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree in health systems management from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans; a Master’s in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Rice University in Texas, and a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree
