I wanted to share a little information about my background I earned my PhD in Information Science with a concentration in Health Informatics in the College of Information here at UNT, after enjoying a full career as a nurse/healthcare executive in a variety of healthcare delivery environments I hold bachelor’s degrees in both biology and nursing from Juniata College and then Thomas Jefferson University I hold a current Texas RN license, and nursing has given me the chance to serve in a leadership capacity in many healthcare organizations Prior to earning my PhD, I served as the director of home health and hospice agencies; the director of an occupational health center; the Executive Director of a program funded by NIH and the National Cancer Institute to procure human tissue for research; and most recently, as the CLEAR | University of North Texas AGER 5300: Information Systems for Healthcare Management 2016 Chief Nursing Officer for a local hospital In each work environment, health care information systems were a key component of the organization and were essential to the delivery of high quality, outcome driven health care This course will provide a broad overview of healthcare information technology, including the impact of the external environment and government regulations, and a detailed review of hardware, software and clinical/administrative applications and 978-1-56793-599-8 Course Description This course provides an overview of health information systems and the applications in clinical and integrated services We examine the management of healthcare information systems and the impact of complex regulatory and reimbursement systems Primary issues include data security, storage and retrieval, management analysis, reporting, and system valuation This course is comprised of three modules, with 13 associated weekly online discussion topics In addition, there will be two tests covering information presented in the first and then second modules, and an applied final paper on a topic selected from a list of topics provided by the instructor In the final paper, he student will have the opportunity to more closely examine a topic area of designed to prepare students for advancement to leadership positions in health information systems management • Students will understand and explain the effects of the external environment on the evolution of health information technologies • Students will understand and explain the role of the Chief Information Officer • Students will be able to describe the types of operational, management, and clinical applications that are part of the health information system and will be able to articulate the needs of their user groups • Students will explain the current governmental and regulatory influences on the implementation and effective use of health information technologies • Students will be able to articulate effective HIT project management strategies • Students will learn to complete an HIT value analysis • Students will learn be able to articulate effective strategies for HIT system selection and contract management Learning Objectives • The learner will be an active and the Course is Organized: The course is organized into three specific modules: HIT Strategic Alignment, Operational Effectiveness, and Strategic Competitive Advantage In Week 1, we will begin the first module, HIT Strategic Alignment This module focuses on the place of health information technology (HIT) within the external and regulatory environments, and describes the role of the Chief Information Officer, and the governance of HIT This unit will take weeks, and will be followed in Week by Assessment Next, we will move on to the second module, Operational Effectiveness, which will begin in week and will also take weeks This module will focus on HIT architecture, infrastructure, system selection, and essential applications, and will be followed in Week 12 by Assessment Finally, in week 13, we the course menu entitled List of Final Paper Topics I recommend that students review all of the available topics and choose a final paper topic that represents an area of special personal interest covered in the course This should be a topic that you will enjoy finding out more about After reviewing the list of possible topics, each student will select the topic that he or she is most interested in, and will submit their topic in the area of Assignments in the course menu marked Final Paper Topic Sign Ups Your final paper topic selections will be approved by the instructor prior to moving on to the next stage, so take your time and choose your topic carefully Your selection cannot be changed once it has been approved, and students may select a final paper topic as soon as they easy reference ASSESSMENTS & GRADING This course is made up of a series of assignments and assessments to assist you in achieving the course learning objectives/outcomes Each week you will work on various combinations of assignments, activities, discussions, readings, research, etc which will be made available to you each Sunday at 5pm and close on the following Sunday at 5pm This gives you the benefit of the full weekend to complete your participation in the week’s discussion topic The total points available for the course for the combined discussion forums, assessment and final project paper is 1400 points I Discussion Board Participation and Weekly Activities (25%)- Your personal introduction and 13 discussion forums @ 25 points each = 350 points Purpose: To provide the student with a general introduction to major issues associated with healthcare administration, and to teach participants how to contribute meaningfully to a discussion in an online environment Before your first interaction on the discussion board, please review the Rubric for Discussion Board Participation posted in Rubrics Description: The discussion board assignments and activities are organized around the thirteen major topics covered in the course Textbook readings are linked to each discussion board topic, and I will introduce each week’s discussion with a lesson that presents an experience or perspective gained during my tenure as a health care executive or drawn from the literature that relates to the topic of the week Instructions: The course week will begin on Sundays at 5pm, and initial postings to the weekly discussion board assignments (your own response to the discussion topic and responses to two of your classmates’ responses) are due every Thursday, no later than 11:59pm These posts will lay the foundation for the beginning of our conversation, but students are expected to post throughout the week, and to introduce supplementary materials to expand the conversation or to illustrate your point Each week’s discussion will close on Sundays at 5pm and the new week’s discussion window will begin Begin reading weekly materials early, so that you will be the grading of the discussion board Participation is required throughout the week, not simply on a single day Each discussion forum is worth 25 points Students that fail to respond to a weekly discussion forum will receive a for the week Poor responses like “I agree” or “Well said!” are not substantive responses and will not be counted as a quality response Quality interaction with your instructor and with your peers is essential in this class In order to earn credit for the discussion associated with each topic, you are, at a minimum, required to respond to the discussion thread yourself and to post quality responses to at least two of your classmates by the Thursday 11:59 pm deadline Achievement of this standard will earn 15 points To earn the maximum credit available each week (25 points), you will need to improve or expand the week’s discussion by illustrating your points with personal examples, video links from YouTube, academic journal or professional magazine articles or Web based articles that you identify through your own research, or newspaper articles that are relevant, etc IMPORTANT: If you add such materials, please so by posting the web link to access the material you would like to share This ensures that closed captioning and other assistive tools will be available for students that must rely on them to access the material The more you discussions labeled by the appropriate topic by creating a thread • After you have responded to the discussion question each week, respond to the postings of two of your classmates by Thursday at 11:59pm • Throughout the remaining portion of the week, feel free to take the discussion in any direction that you choose as long as it is related to the weekly topic at hand and is supported with material that you contribute from your own experience or other sources This will keep our discussion dynamic and interesting Be aware of the policy for late work provided in the syllabus Mark all due dates on your calendar to be sure that course assignments are turned in on time Assessments (50%)- 350 points each or 700 points There will be two online exams, the first given during week called Assessment 1, and the second given during week 12 and both will be posted in the Assessment folder on the course menu Each exam will be worth 350 points and will represent 25% of your final grade Each exam will have 35 multiple choice questions (worth 10 points each) covering material presented in the first chapters of the textbook for the first exam and the second chapters of the textbook for the complete each exam online The exam will be open book/open notes and is designed to ensure mastery of major course concepts prior to beginning the final paper You are expected to know the information
