to respect COURSE DESCRIPTION IEP 063 is an advanced grammar reinforcement and utilization course, emphasizing both oral and written language skills This course focuses on the major structures of English and also explores the various exceptions and nuances of these structures The use of grammar within the context of authentic materials is emphasized The instructor will focus on the use of passive and perfective gerund and infinitive forms, conditional sentences and wish clauses, proper sentence structure, coordinating conjunctions and connectors, adverb clauses and phrases, and other Communicate orally and in writing using grammar structures that are clearly recognizable to native speakers of English; Use different verb tenses appropriately and with relative ease; Recognize the differences between nuances of closely related structures; Identify and correct grammar errors in your own writing CORE CONCEPTS To achieve the goals of this course, you will need to master the following core concepts: Form, meaning, and use of the English verb system; Sentence structure, word order, subject-verb agreement; Coordinating conjunctions and connectives; Adverb clauses and Grades for IEP courses are submitted to the registrar as Pass/No Pass, but a decimal grade may be given by the IEP instructor The decimal grade you receive for the course will be derived using City University of Seattle’s decimal grading system A minimum passing score of 75% is required in order to pass this course and is based on the following: Assignments Quizzes (two equally weighted) Grammar guidance in determining your decimal grade EXPLANATION OF ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING QUIZZES There will be two quizzes on the various grammar points covered in this class Your instructor will provide information about the content, style, and grading criteria for the quizzes in this course Grading Criteria for Quizzes Quiz grades will be based on the percentage of correct answers GRAMMAR CONTEST You will work in teams of three You will create a grammar competition for your classmates based on selected grammar elements It is up to you to choose the form of the contest (competing teams, competing individuals, multiple-choice questions, making the contestants move around the classroom, measuring the speed of response, etc.) You will also create the evaluation system (how the correct responses will be awarded) and decide on an attractive prize for the winner The contest should be fun and creative, with the use of some visual aids This will be done at the end of the term in order to review the grammar elements covered in the course Grading criteria for this assignment will be specified by your instructor CLASS CONTRIBUTION Dynamic participation in class is critical in order for you to improve your English abilities This includes arriving to class on time, being prepared for class, asking questions of your peers and instructor, and submitting ideas to class discussions and presentations Contribution is also measured by participants’ investment in their peers’ success as demonstrated by giving and receiving feedback, participation in group activities, and willingness
