Class: 07 KQ-KC Time: 4 periods
Main language focus: Reading comprehension
Integrated language skills: Writing
I. Objectives: Students will demonstrate successful reading for comprehension of describing
structure.
II. Prior Knowledge
Most students have knowledge on Basic English.
III. Teaching Aids:
Reading text, tapes, projector, laptop
IV. Teaching Points:
A. Structural systems:
1. Vocabulary: (Ss work individually)
• The post-and-lintel structure consists of three upright posts and two horizontal lintels.
• The posts support the lintels which carry the roof.
• The posts carry the lintels which support the roof.
• The lintels span a distance of 1 meter.
• Materials used for post-and-lintel structures include stone and timber
2. Read and rewrite sentences :(Ss work in pairs)

The post-and-lintel structure, in the diagram above, is composed of straight members. The vertical
and horizontal members which are used to make the structure are called posts and lintels respectively.
The posts are spaced at 1 meter centers. They are made up of blocks. Both the posts and the lintels are
made of stone.
1. The post-and-lintel structure is composed of straight members.
The post-and-lintel structure ……. straight members.
2. The vertical members which are used to make the structure are called posts.
Posts are …………. members in the structure.
3. The horizontal members which are used to make the structure are called lintels.
Lintels are ………… member in the structure.
4. The posts are spaced at 1 meter centers.
The posts span ……… of 1 meter.
5. Both the posts and the lintels are made of stone.
Stone is main ………… for posts and lintels .

Joint X:
Plate A is welded to plate B
Plate A is joined to plate B by welds
Plate A and B are welded together
The force on the plate A is transmitted through the welds to plate B
Joint X is not filled with packing because the contact faces of the joint are machined flat.
Exercise 1: Complete these sentences about Joint Y . (Ss work individually)
a) Plate C plate D by
b) Plate C and D
c) The force on the plate C
d) Plate C plate D
e) Joint Y is filled with packing
III.Reading :
Exercise 1: Look at the text and answer the questions. (Ss work in groups)
The single-storey structure consists of three frames. These frames are made up of steel stanchions and
beams. The frames are placed between end walls and spaced at 3 metre centres. The stanchions carry
the beams. These beams support the roof. The roof beams cantilever a short distance beyond the

stanchions. This means that they extend over the profiled sheet steel cladding. The cladding can then
be placed outside the line of the stanchions.
The beams are bolted to steel stanchion caps. The stanchion caps are welded to the top of each
stanchion. The load on each beam is transmitted through these plates to the stanchions.
The upper face of the steel base plates and the ends of the stanchions are machined flat. The
bottom of each stanchion is welded to a base plate. Each base plate is fixed to a concrete column base
by two holding-down bolts.
Steel angles are fixed across the ends of the beams and built into the brick walls. These angles
tie the frames together and also provide a place to fix the top of the cladding.
Answer the questions:
1. How are the angles fixed to the roof beams?
2. How are the loads on the roof beam transmitted to the column bases?
3. What is the joint between a base plate a column base filled with?
4. Why do the roof beams cantilever a short distance?
