The students will not feel that learning is a burden if they are interested in studying They will put their hearts into learning actively Arousing the interest of the students is the key to learn English well Learning interest can promote the students to throw themselves into studying enthusiastically It also can enrich the students' knowledge, open the students' mind and make up for a weakness of intelligent development But how should we arouse the learning interest? Learning interest cannot produce spontaneously All kinds of social factors are influencing the studying of the students The teachers should arouse the students plan fully and purposefully to make the students interested in learning and transform the needs from the family, society and school into the internal ones Therefore, with this article, I decided to I share experiences with colleagues the topic: “Enhance students’ interest in learning English through experience activities in Dong Khe primary and secondary school” II theoretical basis Begin by making sure that teachers understand what interest, the role of interest What is interest? Interest is the best teacher It refers to a readiness or desire to give attention to something or learn about something (Longman dictionary of contemporary English, P798, and the Commercial press) It is a psychological inclination with which students can understand something well and takes an active part in learning activities The role and manifest of interest When students are interested in what they are learning They will learn them in a good mood and won’t feel tired during learning English It’s obvious that they will get twice the achievement with half an effort On the contrary, if students lose their interest, they will learn anything with a passive attitude, which leads to such results: They study English as a burden and are fed up with English Thus they will get half the result with twice the effort Methods to enhance students’ English learning interest To enhance student’s interest in learning English, teacher plays main role Motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is a key factor in the success of students at all stages of their education, and teachers can play a pivotal role in providing and encouraging that motivation in their students Of course that’s much easier said than done, as all students are motivated differently and it takes time and a lot of effort to learn to get a classroom full of kids enthusiastic about learning, working hard, and pushing themselves to excel Even the most well-intentioned and educated teachers sometimes lack the skills to keep kids on track, so whether you’re a new teacher or an experienced one, try using extracurricular activities to motivate your students and to encourage them to live up to their true potential 4 III Practical basis The project "Teaching and learning foreign languages in the national education system for the period 2008-2020" was approved by the Prime Minister on September 30th, 2013 Starting from the academic year 2008, Dong Khe primary and secondary school, as well as most schools in the district held official teaching English subjects Therefore, in the teaching process, our school faced many difficulties in teaching this subject The biggest difficulty is the lack of teachers of English, at that time the school had hired contract teachers, teacher shortage makes it difficult to complete the planning department and the quality of teaching is very much affected The second challenge, English is a new and difficult subjects, so students are difficult to reach and good in this course We know, each subject has its own peculiarity As a teacher of English, I realized that English is a difficult subject, even at first it is a luxury for coursework student's mountainous regions as they thought School year 1998, I started teaching career, the first day I walked into the classroom, I greet and say a few sentences in English is very simple so that students respond to me is incomprehensible silence, I called some students of the class are considered good stand up answers my question They face d awkward and confused Some strongly expressed an opinion that: We mainly hear teachers lecture and take notes, rarely speak English and could not understand what I said The next day they continued to English students now have a sense of fear of bald or boredom I wonder, concern: Why students have those problems? And that time let me answer that English is a difficult subject and new students it's hard to reach Actual past few weeks of classes, I was oblivious to a problem that they are almost "afraid" to learn in English, elementary students are only good at this subject is like most students left school very weak and maybe we just learned that due to the forced study for points Also, their vocabulary is too little, grammar knowledge uncertainty, limited communication level, non-standard pronunciation As a result, students are less interested With the difficulties mentioned above, I have concerns and find solutions to overcome by organizing for student extracurricular activities Through the active nature of learning by playing 5 Part B: CONTENTS I SUBJECTS AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY Aims of the research - To introduce interest and extra activities and to show the advantages of extra activities in learning interest - To show how to organize outdoor activities effectively and how to deal with initial problems that may arise - To show how this idea can be used for various outdoor activities - To give teachers confidence in organizing extracurricular activities themselves Scope of research: This study is only concerned with ways of organizing activities outside classroom rather than with teaching techniques II REAL STATES: Students English is one of the main subjects at school, but this subject is quiet difficult It is not easy for the students who don’t have aptitude to study English Specially, the students in rural area, remote area, and mountainous area are poor in English The innovation of program in textbook and applying new method in teaching as well as learning, many students like this subject They warmly respond all activities but most of them are good and excellent student The rest are poor, they learn English passively, they are always afraid of speaking in public because they are shy to make mistake We can see that these students are not keen on learning English Many students are short of learning conscious, lack of learning patience them is embarrassed to get and apply the theory in practicing skill But when students are interested in what they are learning They will learn them in a good mood and won’t feel tired during learning English It’s obvious that they will get twice the achievement with half an effort On the contrary, if students lose their interest, they will learn anything with a passive attitude, which leads to such results: They study English as a burden and are fed up with English Thus they will get half the result with twice the effort At the beginning of this year, I was offered to teach classes at Dong Khe primary and secondary school: Grade Taking survey of grade I got the following result: Total students Level of enjoyment 37 Standard of English knowledge Love Like Don’t like Hate Excellent Good Fair Poor/fail Amount % Amount % Amount % Amount % Amount % Amount % Amount % Amount % 8 15 13 16 (16%) (21,5%) (21,5%) (41%) (8%) (13,5%) (35,5%) (43%) According to the survey, most students are poor and fail Having that result due to students is not interested in learning English I asked my students: Why don’t you like English? Most of them answer “because it is difficult to remember too many words, the grammar is too complicated” English is one of the subjects many students are most afraid of learning so the poor result is not avoided The following evidences are proved clearly that there is the lack of students’ learning interest in English leading to poor result: Evidence 1: I asked 10 students by chance in class to talk about themselves in two minutes and result: students only talk about name, class, address, hobby… Example: My name is (/did/ wrong pronunciation) Kim An, I am fourteen year (plural) old, I live in …., I like English, I am….(heritage)….student I….….(heritage)….like watch TV (grammar).I like go to by bike Evidence 2: I gave students a dialogue and asked 15 pairs to read aloud and the result: each student made at least four mistakes, even there are students made thirty mistakes in 95 words they read Teachers Many teachers don’t want to change method They are afraid of the innovation although they know that there are many students lost their learning interests gradually because the teaching method is not persuasive enough to attract students’ interest Some teachers don’t want to let their students be in the extracurricular activities because they think that they will waste time I had taken a survey to check if the teachers of English often organize extracurricular activities and I got the following result: Organizing extracurricular activities Total Never teachers Amount/ % (25%) Rarely sometimes Often Amount/ % Amount/ % Amount/ % (37.5%) (25%) (12.5%) The reasons of above state *) Students: - Subjective reason: lazy, be afraid, poor perception Timid, lack of selfconfidence, complex, the method of learning is not suitable - Objectives reason: The teaching method, family, the environment, psychology… *) Teachers: - Be afraid of innovation - Limited aptitude III SOLUTION Overall To solve all these problems, I organize extracurricular activities regularly, about once a month is the most suitable To avoid being boring and repetitive, every time I hold a different types of activities such as: English club, English karaoke, watching cartoons or films in English, learning English from the online programs on the Internet Each activity has the effect of supporting and its own significance in the process of attracting and stimulating the students in learning the language One importance is that we must know how to organize such activities appropriately and cleverly, it will have a good result for teaching English Following are some extracurricular activities that I have held in recent years in order to attract and stimulate the passion of students in learning English These activities really brought a very high efficiency and stimulate the students' passion for English Organizing extracurricular activities 2.1 Watching cartoons and films in English In the extracurricular lessons in the afternoon, I often spend 45 minutes getting my students to watch cartoons or children film in English With this activity, not only the students relax their mind but they also learn to get the knowledge of English naturally After watching a movie, I usually give the tasks to check if they can or cannot understand what they have just watched and check if they can remember the main contents of the movie * Example: After watching cartoon “HORRID HENRY”, can you list out some sentences using “to be” Who can retell something that you like best about this cartoon? The fact that the students are very passionate about watching cartoons, so they remember quite clearly the content of the film Naturally, they learn amount of vocabulary and sentences to communicate and use every day *) Some cartoons that my students have already watched: 2.2 Learning English through interesting English songs At the beginning of the period, or at the end of it, I usually spend a certain amount of time training students to sing the songs in English via subtitles This is causing excitement for the children The kids are so keen on singing, so they will be easier to belong to the vocabulary or structures used in the song Through learning to sing, not only will the students strengthen the English subject knowledge, they also develop their social skills I think this is a very practical and essential complementary activity when learning a language Example: Learning to sing the song “TELL ME WHY” on KARAOKE online TELL ME WHY In my dream children sing a song of love for every boy and girl The sky is blue and fields are green and laughter is the language of the world Then I wake and all I see is a world full of people in need Tell me why (why) does it have to be like this? Tell me why (why) is there something I have missed? Tell me why (why) cos I don't understand When so many need somebody we don't give a helping hand Tell me why? Everyday I ask myself what will I have to to be a man? Do I have to stand and fight to prove to everybody who I am? Is that what my life is for to waste in a world full of war? (why, why if we're all the same) tell me why (why, why we pass the blame) tell me why (why, why does it never end) can someone tell us why we cannot just be friends *) Some English songs that I trained my students to sing through Karaoke: 2.3 Learning English from the online programs on the Internet Today, with the strong development of the Internet, it makes people learn languages easily to reach with the knowledge and skills they need There are many programs learning English is introduced to students through networking sites such as “Fun Easy English”, “English online”, “Tiếng Anh Hoa Mặt Trời” To consolidate vocabulary, grammar or reinforce the skills of listening, speaking reading and writing to students, I introduces and instructs them about some English course important and useful for junior high school students 11 Through it, you can learn in your spare time at home, or anywhere there is access internet *) Some useful websites for learning English: 2.4 Organize English Club Right from the beginning of the school year I made plans to establish a club, form and contents Club program The first time, I made the subject organized by the "Club" as follows, select teams from layers of two grades and (academic year 2021- 2022) Each team consists of members The contest consists of rounds - Round 1: teams play lots knockout - Round 2: winners in round play next - Round 3: + contest winner selected in the first, second + team lost in Round contest selected the third, fourth 12 Three rounds have contests Each session includes examination host and judges and teachers of English as the advisory The host and judges I get from students In each contest even though only 10 members of the two teams directly involved from start to play the game, but in addition I also held one contest for fans to attract more crowded audience as possible Audiences to "English Club" are to fans, to answer questions, to have fun and the most important thing is to learn English in a natural way, from the comfort of the game Each session consists of parts exam Each contest has a function, its own purposes There are specific points for each section After each performance *) Part 1: Getting started - At the competition starts, the host will read out and press time of minutes Which team is dressed much vocabulary write English correctly wins (Team was written more than 20 points; the team wrote less than 10 points are added) - The competition aims to examine and improve their vocabulary for past requirements such as: "Write the infinitive form of the verb in that you know?", "Write the mass noun", "write the short adjective" Members of the two teams will be on writing about vocabulary they know in their team sheet for minutes When the time expires, the advisory board will put the word, asks the audience literally (if possible), and editing Pronounced like the "Club" will be strengthened, expanded on a large quantity of vocabulary in English *) Part 2: Multiple choice - This session will have sentences unfinished Each question has answers A, B, C, or D The host will read each sentence and ask the same two teams responded by dirty card A, B, C, or D (Each question is dirty only a single card) - Then the host will ask each team representative will explain why they chose such answers Finally advisory board will explain and give the correct answer to teams and all "Clubs" will be clearer on the issue Each correct answer is plus points (total points 20 points) - The purpose of this section to test, strengthen and enhance their knowledge of grammar to the children - Example: When checking the understanding of the children, about the "Well" in English, I will be recommended as follows: Lan bought a movie ticket, she next Sunday A is going to see B Sees C Will see D Saw People .English all over the world A is speaking B speak C speaks D are speaking My brother the newspaper now 13 A reads B reading C is reading She English for years A taught B has taught C teaches I too much cake in the last party A eat B eating C will eat D will read D will teach D ate - In summary in this section I can check all the grammatical form, the children have learned Thereby, I - advisory board will Illusion wrong, repeat, reinforce, enhance and deepen knowledge of grammar to the children in a natural way (no pressure like in the classroom) I think this is the beauty of ''club'' *) Part 3: For fans (for audiences) - This section has questions, you can use pictures, objects used to ask fans, or they may ask the simple question close to the audience as much purpose can answer questions as possible Among them will be a few more tough questions for curious, exploring for the fans with good academic English - If the fans to answer questions the host will call up the lucky draw for his gifts (like magic hat game) To inspire fans The fans can be: How many months are there in a year? Which country won the Tiger Cup in 1998? Which animal in Viet Nam was Chosen to be a long game of SEAGAME 2022? Which subjects you like best? How many people are there in your family? Who is the oldest? - During the examination may have both the team does not answer the fans for reply (In order to fully exploit the understanding of the students and not overlook those who have thought about English Brother) *) Part 4: Key words - The game play is similar to the magic hat, except that, where the students will guess the word, pronounced in English - Advisory Board will give one word, one phrase keys including how many letters, how meaningful it Two teams take turns guessing letters in the word (Each correct guess is plus two points, wrong except a point) Which team is the key finding in advance plus points? 1- Example 1: "Since the key is an adjective of letters, talking to the style of each team" -> Answer: FAIRPLAY 2- Example 2: "The key is the first noun phrase about useful forms to consolidate and improve on the subject in English for you 11-letter phrases " 14 ENGLISHCLUB *) Part 5: Ring the bell to answer fast - This section consists of questions about social knowledge (learned in books in English, literature, history, geography ) - To be part of this contest them, I have compiled 100 questions beforehand to the team, for the team to find out the answer - Here the students had the opportunity to reply in English on the question of information; both structured training and know more about the social information useful What is the Highest Tower in the World? How long is it? - In this competition each team has one bell When the host is finished reading the question, which team will ring the bell before the previous reply list - Each respondent earned points, if you want to double the number of points, the team hopes to put on the table the star (Will be penalized, put stars hope that answered incorrectly) *) Part 6: SPEECH - Advisory Board is a theme for both teams to days before the examination compared to teams learn and prepare in advance - In the competition, will take minutes for two teams a representative from each team stood up for all DF presentations given in English Example - "You just told her thoughts on the subject in English" Example - "You just mentioned the pollution of the environment and how to resolve the pollution to the environment that we have today" My school's English club really attracts a large number of students involved and the enthusiastic response of the administration and all the teachers The team has participated in the competition enthusiastically, passionately; the members have to look for new and creative In each match I live interview some questions you have related to their English studies I've asked Le Van Viet Anh Grade7, “Why you come to “English Club"? And I got the result: 90% students answered “yes” Most teachers of English in my school and the nearby schools admitted that through extracurricular activities more and more students enjoy learning English Part C: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Meaning and scope of application of the initiative In conclusion, nowadays in Vietnamese secondary schools, the teaching of English in general does not meet the requirement of social development One of the reasons causing this problem is that the methods as well as techniques in teaching are not appropriate and flexible In my opinion, there are no methods or techniques that show absolute usefulness for the teaching unless the teacher can stimulate his/ her students and arise student’s interest in learning And what I hope to in this study just to upon and present some measures to increase students' English learning interest in secondary schools Due to the short time as well as limited knowledge of the author on this matter, mistakes and errors are inevitable So the thesis has left much room for further discussion, criticism and improvement by teacher and those who may concern All remarks, comments, suggestions are deeply appreciated and well received 18 Over time organizing extracurricular activities to English lessons, I see these measures play a positive role in supporting the teaching of foreign languages in general and English in particular It is one of the effective measures, is motivating students to actively participate in learning, research, brainstorming lesson We create situations, contexts, help the student practice becomes meaningful, inspire, help students focus absorb quickly all, contribute to improve the quality of student learning and performance teacher's teaching performance Thus, the organization of extracurricular activities not only creates a fun atmosphere, the warm up in student learning but also a scientific procedure, creativity of teachers Knowing integrated to suit the theme of the Unit Stimulate the passion for learning and research in each student We need to recognize the extracurricular activities as a rewarding job for those students Although it took some time during the teacher's preparation for the design of the game in the lesson Anyhow we are so young generation, the future for the country; we try to my best to invest in foreign language knowledge certain for each student Helps students later funded his basic foreign language, applied as the basis for the practice, to examine the areas of their specialty as well as perceived abundant source of knowledge of mankind Because in the twentyfirst century is the century of science and technology where knowledge of English which is the basis for exchange and learning with other countries around the world Recommendations, suggestions 2.1 For teachers: Must understand lectures, teaching plan Must refer to books and documents related to each unit and lesson to choose games and teaching methods appropriatedly Have got enthusiasm, responsibility and helpful with students Have to be prepared for teaching aids and teaching equipment appliances 2.2 With students: Must have a sense to prepare lesson active before going to class Must have enough all kinds of books for lessons Follow the guide and direct of the teacher 19 The problems presented above is just my own subjective way in Enhance students’ interest in learning English through experience activities in Dong Khe primary and secondary school Because researching time is limited, if there is nothing inappropriate, I am looking forward to contributing the criticism of colleagues so that I have an experience initiative better I sincerely thank you!
