Use Quizizz and Wheel of names in English lessons to increase student engagement through online lessons and in-class lessons during COVID-19 pandemic period - Improve the students’ performance on exams and increase their learning outcomes - Create an enjoyable asmophere during COVID-19 pandemic period in comparision to the typical lesson format and increase the students’ interest in the study of English 1.3 Subjects of the study The study is carried out with 43 students of the class 11B5 who study at To Hien Thanh high school in Thanh Hoa city and have been learning English for years even years( years at lower secondary school, one year at high school and even years at primary school) Among 43 students who take part in the study, most of them only have little knowlegde of English( based on the marks they got in the second final exam in grade 10) However, they have mobile phones which can be connected by wifi or 4G everyday 1.4 Methods of the study In order to achieve the above objectives, the teacher creates online quiz on Quizizz appilcation for grammar and vocabulary in each unit in the English 11 textbook and use Wheel of names to choose students or any things in random To promote mastery of the exercise, students are allowed to take each quiz as many times as they wish to get the highest grade In this study, theory study, observation, data collection and analysis, discussion as well as evaluation are mainly used to achieve the objectives of the study CONTENT 2.1 Literature review 2.1.1 Quizizz (https://quizizz.com/) From Wikipedia, Quizizz is an Indian educational software company headquartered in Bengaluru, India, that creates and sells a gamified student engagement platform The software is used in class, group assignments, pre-test review, formative assessments and pop quizzes.[6] According to this website, https://www.educatorstechnology.com/2021/12/whatis-quizizz-and-how-to-use-it-with.html Quizizz is a game-based learning tool that you can use to engage students in deep and meaningful learning experiences It allows the teachers to create both teacher-paced and studentpaced quizzes and lessons.[7] In other words, Quizizz is a 'gamified student engagement platform' that allows teachers to create, edit, and share fun and interactive quizzes and lessons Quizizz is an online assessment tool as a fun multiplayer classroom activity that allows all students to practice together with their computers, smart phones or Ipad As is the case with Quizalize, Kahoot, Quizlet, and Blooket, Quizizz lets teachers create their own classes, add students, and share game-based quizzes with them Using Quizizz editor, the teachers can easily design their own quizzes embedding various types of questions (multiple choice, open ended, polls, fill in the blanks, etc.) and media (e.g images, videos, voice clips, and audio recordings) With so many new concepts to remember, anything the teachers can to help the students recall information should be a welcome addition to the classroom When given the opportunity to remember learned concepts, skills and details through retrieval practice, this information is recalled and rewritten to students’s memories, creating longer lasting, more accessible paths of understanding Teachers can either assign quizzes as homework in which case students take their time to work on them at their own pace or teachers can host live quizzes in class As students take quizzes, teachers get access to 'detailed classlevel and student-level insights for every class' There are many different types of questions in the quizzes: • Ask the students to recall simple solutions with multiple choice and checkbox questions These types of questions are great for low-stakes quizzes, since they’re easy and don’t take long to complete • Ask your students to retrieve short answers with fill-in-theblank questions These questions are great for driving home specific facts • Help the students give short answers quickly with single textbox questions These questions are great for time-crunched quizzes, since they don’t take long to complete • Ask your students to explain complex concepts with open response questions Although they’re more difficult to evaluate, these questions give your students the freedom to tell you exactly what they know Some types of questions will, inevitably, be more difficult than others If the teacher wants their quiz results to reflect each student’s learning accurately, make sure that you weight each question based on its difficulty For example, complex open response questions should always be worth more than simple multiple choice questions To play a game on Quizizz, the teachers can either choose from a library of millions of public quizzes, or theu can decide to create their own quiz! Once the teachers have picked a quiz, they can conduct it in the classroom with Quizizz live mode or assign it as a homework game for students to practice at their own time Students can use any device with a browser to join the game, and you get all the data both for individual students or the class as a whole After providing students with a unique access code, a quiz can be recorded live as a timed competition or used as homework with a specific deadline After the quizzes have been completed, students can review their answers.[8] 2.1.2 Wheel of name (https://wheelofnames.com/) Wheel of name is a Random Name Picker Website This site provides a wheel that can be uploaded with activities and used to have the students ‘spin the wheel’ The teachers or the students click to spin the wheels and pick the random result It can be used as a random name picker in the classroom- pick a student randomly in the class It also can be used more than just name selection.[9] 2.1.3 The benefits of applying online quizzies and Wheel of names in English teaching and learning * The benefits of online quizzies Giving online quizzes is one of the techniques that teachers can use in class This activity helps the teachers and the students as well, to know what and how much they have understood about a subject This technique is important to be given at the beginning or end of the class However teachers must be mindful to choose the appropriate types of quizzes for the students They have to consider that the quizzes are not only to know the students' comprehension toward the topic but also to make them enjoy completing the quizzes During elearning, teachers can try to use websites that provide ideas and templates which can help them create quizzes Quizizz is one of examples of web-based quizzes that teachers can use to create fun online quizzes Besides, students receive immediate feedback and it can be constructive in nature if the teacher sets up the questions and answers with constructive feedback Firstly, Students are being actively engaged in subject material When students cannot answer certain questions in a quiz, they will go back to reread certain parts of the chapter Teachers can also review questions with most incorrect answers with the students Secondly, Quizzes can increase students’ motivation Students would like to get higher scores during the quizzes To make it happen, the students will pay attention to the teachers' explanation and may even review before the quiz Thirdly, Quizzes can help students to recall information and get better grades When the quiz is set as an assignment, students can play the quiz over again by themselves By repeating, the information will be stuck in their mind Last but not least, Fun online quizzes can reduce students’ stress Quizizz has a live dashboard with music background Students are able to see their own and others’ rank They can compete with other students to get higher scores Powerups feature in Quizizz helps students to get double points or they may also decide to erase this option This feature makes students excited to get more power and use it Sometimes, after they answer the questions, a meme will appear These features make students forget that they are doing a quiz In conclusion, interactive online quizzes not only help teachers with teaching techniques during e-learning but also have a beneficial impact on students Increasing students' involvement, motivation, better score and stress reduction are several benefits that students get through fun online quizzes.[10] * The benefits of Wheel of names There are a lot of virtual random wheel spinners the teachers can choose from However, Wheel of names is an easy website to use, highly customizable, and very engaging for students There are so many uses in the classroom with this random picker wheel This tool can be used without signing into an account However, if teachers wish to use their spinners over and over again or want to create one ahead of time, they can login with their Google account and their lists can be accessed and edited any time under the Open List Tab.[11] In the classroom when teachers use Wheel of names- a random name picker to pick the students in random, they are very eager to see the students who will be chosen This concentration also engaged them in the lesson 2.2 The reality of the students’ engagement and English learning outcomes in class 11B5 at To Hien Thanh High School in Thanh Hoa city Although students who are in grade 11 have been learning English for years or even years(3 years in primary schools), they still feel that English is a very difficult subject Many students not receive sufficient exposure at home They have many difficulties in recognizing sounds, understanding English sentences as well as using English to exercises because of the lack of knowledge on sentence pattern, grammar knowledge, poor vocabulary and even wrong pronunciation Additionally, the students who study at To Hien Thanh High School in Thanh Hoa city not have much opportunities to use English outside classrooms Thus, with lessons at school, they find it difficult to remember English words, the pronunciation as well as the usages Those are the reasons why their English are not good, even there are many students who not know anything about English For these students, learning English as a foreign language is a really boring and uninteresting task when they study at school During Covid-19 pandemic school learning is both done online and in- class Teaching through online learning is challenging not only for teachers but also for students Besides, with difficulties of online learning such as the lack of devices, no internet connection, limited digital skills of parents it is not easy to attract the students’s attention on English lessons not only in lessons at school but also in online lessons during CoVID-19 pandemic period The English marks of these students in the second term final exam when they were in grade 10( school year 2020-2021) are below Average mark of the class is 5.58 2.3 The application of Quizizz and Wheel of names in English lessons during COVID-19 pandemic period to increase engagement and learning outcomes for the students of class 11B5 at To Hien Thanh High School in Thanh Hoa city 2.3.1.Time and Measurement 2.3.1.1 Time The study is carried out in both online and in-class English lessons during COVID-19 pandemic period of this school year( 2021-2022) in class 11B5 The study lasts nearly months ( from September The second period: the second term( January 18th 2022 to April 28th 2022) In-class lessons at 11A5 classroom equipped with television and internet connection 2.3.1.2 Measurement The assessment of student engagement in an English lesson in this study is based mainly on the number of the students and the times of their efforts on every quizizz exercise Their engagement here is mainly about their efforts in studying and their positive attitude toward the lessons and exercises on Quizizz In this study, I myself evaluate the students’ learning outcomes from the marks they get in the final exam of the second term in comparison with ones they got in grade 10 In addition, my observation about their improvement compared to their levels at the beginning to see whether the students are able to recognize the grammartical points or exercises better or not 2.3.2 The use of Quizizz and Wheel of names 2.3.2.1 My Quizizz(https://quizizz.com/admin) Design a quiz(game) The teachers can either multiple choice questions + Choose from a library of millions of public quizzes If the teachers want to use an existing quiz, they can follow these steps: STEP Go to the teacher’s address on www.quizizz.com STEP Select the “Create” panel and enter a name for the quiz Then, choose the appropriate topic(s) and Next STEP 3: Use the “Search for quizzes” box and browse STEP 4: Enter the name available on the website and can be download as Excel files + Some suggestions in Quizizz selection Basing on the content of units in English 11 textbook and the preparation for the second final exam, I recommend some exercises on Quizizz such as: 3.2.2.2 My Wheel of names (https://wheelofnames.com/) STEP Go to www.wheelofnames.com STEP 2: Click on ”Open” to log in by using one of the sign- in methods Step 3: Click on “New” and write the teachers’ own names in the box (11B5, SENTENCES, GRADE 11 MOCK TEST) Step 4: Click on “Save” to save the wheel Step 5: Click on the wheel to spin If the Messenger 2.4 Results and Findings As we know, young learners can easily get bored and lack focus when they study for long periods of time, especially in online classes during COVID-19 pandemic period In order to cope with this limitation, the teacher designed fun quizzes for the students in order to engage students in more active learning Unique features such as power-ups and live dashboard in Quizizz can boost their interest toward the quiz Furthermore, there are several benefits of giving online quizzes for students After using Quizizz and Wheel of names in English lessons for months in this academic year- during COVID-19 pandemic period, it is important to recogize, overall, engaged students are better students who are more actively involved with the content of the lesson and they consequently score higher on final tests With the resulting data is compiled into a spreadsheet to give the teacher a clear visual of the students’ performance in order to analyze trends in which areas might need the most focus in the future This immediate feedback can be used by teachers to revise future learning activities and alter the concentration of material by putting a more significant emphasis on concepts that students are struggling with From the reports of exercises on Quizizz, it can easily to recognize that the number of students who plays the quiz as well as their efforts are much better than ones before This study investiges the effectiveness of Quizizz and Wheel of names on increasing students’ engagement in English lessons during COVID-19 pandemic period It has been shown to motive students to study more and increase participation in activities in class From the marks students of class 11B5 got in the final exam of the second term, it can be seen that that their learning outcomes has been improved Even, there are a lot of good marks Average mark of the class this year is: 6.33( last year: 5.58) This study finds that students perceive that using Quizizz enhances their learning They said that Quizizz is easy to use; doing in-class exercises using Quizizz is better than doing in-class exercise on paper; using Quizizz reduces the test anxiety The study also finds that the more frequently Quizizz is applied in English lessons, the higher their marks in exam are Another finding is that the students become more familiar with English grammatical points at the same time as they know more about the vocabulary and develop their language skills as well as share a good moment with their classmates in their English study 3.CONCLUSION 3.1 Conclusion Having completed this study, I myself believe that the use of Quizizz and Wheel of names is one of the most effective ways in order to increase student engagement in English lessons as well as improve their performance on exam regardless of the age or background of the students, especially during COVID19 pandemic in particular and in learning English in the long run in general Besides difficulties, COVID-19 pandemic period has provided us with an opportunity to pave the way for introducing digital learning using mobile devices and practise information technology skills I have had to make a choice of what I thought most important in terms of theory, the benefits of using Quizizz and Wheel of names in English lessons so as to increase the students’ engagement and develop language skills for the students in their English study This study is aimed at increasing student engagement and the learning outcomes of the students of class 11B5 at To Hien Thanh High School in Thanh Hoa city, Thanh Hoa by using Quizizz- an educational app and Wheel of namesa name picker website It can be clearly seen that students were very positive about the online quizzes in term of ease of use, ability to engage the lessons and improve their learning outcomes, as well Through exercises on Quizizz, the students read and write step by step, finally they will feel easier to develop skills what they want in English They won’t feel worried and have difficulty when they are asked to exercises in English Therefore exercises on Quizizz could become an instrument to practice the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing Quizizz platform should be dedicated to teaching vocabulary, grammatical structures and pronunciation as well, while simultaneously arousing students’ interest in the study of English as a second language According to the result of the study, this application may help students in general and high school students in particular enjoy learning English more, developing their English language and confidence in English exercises as well Additionally, with the development of information technology and modern devices, the students can easily find and study with other English games outside classrooms to have better effects on both improving their learning outcomes as well as developing their English language skills Considering the benefits of Quizizz and Wheel of names on the development of English language, it can be suggested that further- study on different engaging platforms with appropriate aims should be considered This is my own experience in teaching English to the students of class 11B5 this school year at To Hien Thanh High School in Thanh Hoa city With the requirement of teaching and learning English now, I myself believe that the students will use English better, have more confidence in English communication when their language skills are developed Finally, I hope to receive ideas from other teachers so as to have the better study 3.2 Suggestion I myself think that the devepoment of students’ language skills in the study of English as a second language by Quizizzes applications will increase if somedays, we are able to utilize technolygy in English language teaching and students have more chance to use modern technology in English language studying Moreover, I suggest that more training classes for English teachers, even online courses should be held so that the teachers can have more knowledge related to the subject they are teaching and more opportunities to meet and share their experience in their teaching Besides, high schools need to be equipped with advanced technology and other conditions to have an positive effect on teaching and studying a language Lastly and even more importantly, a new textbook has been published in stead of the current one However, many students not have opportunity to study it Although the current textbooks has been changed much in order to meet with the need of the students as well as the society, the contents of skills parts are not really suitable to the requirement of today’s life In addition, high school students not have opportunity to practise much in the real life so they are easy to forget Therefore, The Ministry of Education and Traning should have plans to edit the textbooks and cirriculum which are more suitable for the changes of both the students and the society In summary, the ability of teachers in teaching English, the changes in the content of the textbook and the use of advanced technology in the English classrooms would make the quality of teaching and learning English at high schools better in the future XÁC NHẬN CỦA HIỆU TRƯỞNG Thanh Hóa, ngày 25 tháng 05 năm2022 Tơi xin cam đoan SKKN viết, không chép nội dung người khác Lê
