IE Brown Executive MBA Developing innovative leaders for a changing world Liberal Arts meets the MBA IE Business School Brown University 01/02 IE Brown Executive MBA The IE Brown Partnership IE and Brown: two world-class institutions, one unique experience in management education In 2009, IE Business School and Brown University formed a broad-based partnership, bringing together one of the world’s leading business schools and a globally distinguished research university This unique partnership rests on strong shared values and a common vision Brown and IE share a commitment to academic excellence, student-centered learning, innovation in teaching and research driven by entrepreneurial thinking and interdisciplinary exchange The two schools are bound by a common vision of higher education institutions as the critical knowledge hubs of the twenty-first century where students, academics and practitioners come together to learn, grow and to transform the world around them Madrid-based IE Business School is consistently ranked as one of the best business schools in the world Since its founding in 1973 as an independent, post-graduate institution, it has earned a reputation as a particularly innovative, entrepreneurial school that has transformed management education with practice-oriented programs, incorporation of the humanities into business training, and the use of blendedlearning methodologies combining online and face-to-face interactions Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island, is one of the most highly esteemed universities in the U.S and a member of the Ivy League Its superlative programs in undergraduate, graduate, and medical education are characterized by a distinctive academic philosophy, a world-class faculty, and a tradition of innovative and rigorous multidisciplinary study Brown’s mission is to serve the community, the nation, and the world by educating and preparing students—in the words of its original charter—”to discharge the offices of life with usefulness and reputation.” Brown attracts independent, motivated and open-minded students with global interests Combining IE’s strength in interdisciplinary management education and Brown’s excellence in the humanities, social, biological and physical sciences, the two schools have created the new IE Brown Executive MBA with a single purpose: to develop informed, globally-minded, and innovative leaders Santiago Iñiguez Dean of IE Business School David Kertzer Provost, Brown University “This initiative comes at a particularly propitious time, as the global economic situation calls for a systematic rethinking of financial systems and management paradigms There needs to be a much wider approach to understanding the role of corporations and managers within our global society Managers need to be exposed to broader philosophies and schools of thought, building a wider vision of value creation and sustainability This alliance is a major step forward in developing a higher education model which is focused on developing students who are global citizens as well as well rounded professionals” “This partnership gives us an opportunity to create a new model of leadership education, one that fuses the breadth, creativity, and rigor of the liberal arts with the latest innovative approaches to training managers and entrepreneurs for the global challenges of the twentyfirst century Successfully meeting those challenges will require a generation of leaders who understand the cultural, social, political and scientific changes that are transforming our world, and who can apply the research and analytical tools they acquire in dynamic and complex environments.” IE and Brown a unique blend, a unique program The IE Brown Executive MBA* is a highly innovative program designed to provide senior managers with the opportunity to develop and broaden their management and leadership skills in an intensive, Executive MBA Liberal Arts meets the MBA The IE Brown Executive MBA program aims to develop holistic managers and entrepreneurs, leaders with a global vision of management – global in terms of geography, business functions, and business’ role in the world Designed against the backdrop of twentyfirst century management and leadership challenges, the program provides cuttingedge training in all the functional areas of management and cultivates leaders who are: • entrepreneurially-minded employing innovative thinking to turn challenges into opportunities; • globally-aware and inquisitive of the social, political, economic, and technological changes in the world; • morally-grounded with a strong ethical compass and an understanding that real economic value creation must be socially and environmentally sustainable; • authentic, flexible, and able to cope with ambiguity – the attributes needed to manage and lead in times of change A program designed for professionals with a busy agenda The program format and mode of delivery make it accessible to participants anywhere in the world It is specifically designed for senior managers and entrepreneurs who wish to undertake a rigorous, intensive, and transformational MBA program without taking a break from their current job or responsibilities The program utilizes a part-time blended methodology combining short face-toface periods with intermittent online study that is optimized for the busy agendas of executives and entrepreneurs on the go This way, participants get to continuously apply the insights gleaned from the program in their jobs, fostering rapid assimilation and deeper learning A program that is not for everyone In keeping with the two schools’ values and strengths, the IE Brown Executive MBA goes further than a traditional MBA The program is designed to pose the pertinent questions of our time and to foster critical inquiry in the best liberal arts tradition The IE Brown Executive MBA is particularly well-suited if you aspire to: • … understand how the history, culture, and politics of countries and regions shape the marketplace in a global business environment • … learn how the latest breakthroughs in science and engineering can become the basis for breakout entrepreneurial businesses • … explore the critical role of human endeavor–from research and development to the arts, culture and popular media–in shaping services and products to meet emerging demands • … enjoy questioning conventional wisdom and critically examining fundamental business concepts such as “market”, “rationality”, “value”, and “globalization” • … engage in a program that puts human beings–and the timeless insights of the humanities – at the very center of management IE Business School Brown University 09/10 IE Brown Executive MBA The program Curriculum The program is composed of six curriculum areas: • At the heart of the program sits the MBA Core Comprising roughly two thirds of all program sessions, the MBA Core familiarizes participants with the latest management tools and concepts through courses in Marketing Management, Organizational Behavior, Strategic Management, Accounting and Management Control, Financial Management, Managerial Economics, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Information Systems, Human Resources Management, and General Management Organized around real-life business cases, dynamic class sessions draw on the diversity of participants’ professional experience, backgrounds, and perspectives as professors develop and illustrate cutting-edge insights • The Liberal Arts & Critical Studies module is inspired by the fact that the globalized world is not flat but intensely diverse and differentiated, and that a focus on the present and the future requires understanding of the past Drawing from areas including history, philosophy, legal studies, political science, anthropology, the arts, and media studies, this module explores the historical roots and current concerns underlying societies and cultures of the world Topics and themes range from dialogues and tensions between religion and secularization to capitalism and its hidden economies, comparative ethics in political and economic contexts, and the production of knowledge across cultural boundaries, from science to the arts • Another module focuses specifically on Globalization & the Changing Context of Business The ability to sell, source, and draw on talent all over the world has become the new business imperative This requires a deep understanding of the political and social forces shaping emerging markets and how this affects management and business strategy At the same time, global challenges from climate change and migration flows to epidemics and transnational terrorism constitute sources of disruptive change that will occupy the management agenda for years to come • The objective of the Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship module is to teach the innovation processes and develop the entrepreneurial skills associated with the continuous creation of value in a business environment and social context The ability of a company to create new value for customers and end users is essential to sustained growth This module is therefore about participants understanding corporate innovation processes and learning the leadership skills associated with entrepreneurial management and new business development The pedagogical approach is that of ‘experiential learning’ in which the faculty provide a framework for understanding, but the participants develop and sharpen their skills by undertaking projects based upon relevant experiences drawn from their own environment The projects blend team and individual activities, culminating in a business case The project also incorporates the nuanced learnings from the liberal arts and critical studies curriculum in framing the business case in a relevant cultural, historical and geopolitical context IE Business School Brown University 11/12 IE Brown Executive MBA • Skilled decision-making in a complex environment is the essence of good management The Decision-Making & Modes of Thinking module focuses specifically on the science and practice of decision-making Whereas most traditional management Leadership & Communication Decision-Making & Modes of Thinking education approaches decision-making as an objective process in which information is gathered and weighed to arrive at ‘the optimum’ solution, the module develops richness and insights into the topic by drawing from different disciplinary traditions, including philosophy, psychology, and sociology Participants arrive at a deeper understanding of their personal decision-making, and the processes of other people Companies are social networks of individuals, and the module leads to an understanding of the dynamics of interacting people and interactive thinking that is essential for a mastery of decision-making within the modern Globalization & Changing Context of Business MBA core dynamic and complex business environment Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship • The best business ideas and strategic insights are lost if executives lack the skills to implement them The Leadership & Communication module focuses on the development of the critical “interactive people skills” that set leaders apart From virtual teamwork to creativity, public speaking, and coaching, the workshops of this module chart a personalized course to help each participant become a more effective leader Liberal Arts & Critical Studies IE Business School Brown University 13/14 IE Brown Executive MBA Structure Lasting 15 months, the IE Brown Executive MBA comprises some 300 teaching sessions, roughly half of which are delivered during five face-to-face periods and the other half being taught via IE’s proven and acclaimed online methodology The program is highly interactive, giving participants the opportunity to work closely with their peers and with the faculty The program relies heavily on the case method, role-playing, and other participant-centered learning techniques and much of the work is undertaken in teams that are formed to maximize diversity Program length: 15 months Start date: March 2012 Core MBA Curriculum March June October March May weeks Brown week Brown week IE week Brown weeks IE Liberal Arts & Critical Studies Globalization & the Changing Context of Business Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship Decision-making & Modes of Thinking Leadership & Communication The online program components allow participants from anywhere in the world and with any working timetable or travelling requirements to attend the program Online forum discussions unfold asynchronously over four days and therefore often go deeper than conventional face-to-face sessions as students and professors have time to read contributions that have been posted, digest and reflect upon them, and then respond with carefully thought out comments to the class In a given week, several discussions are held in parallel, which fosters linkages across subjects and threads Complementing the online forum discussions, participants work with a variety of digital distance learning tools, from video conferencing and instant messenger to online documents and VOIP, to overcome geographical and time constraints Perhaps surprisingly, this connectedness builds stronger communities among students, professors, and program staff than in most face-to-face programs IE Business School Brown University are just some of the professors you will be working with on the program: Carl Kock IE Business School Germany PhD Wharton, University of Pennsylvania Strategic Management “Participants need to look at what they’re being taught with fresh eyes It’s crucial to understand a few things about the game that’s being played, and to that you need to look at causal processes, the evolution of the what and the why.” John Clendenin IE Business School USA MBA Harvard Business School Leadership and Organisational Behaviour “ My research interests in Leadership, Performance and Human Values are supported by the collaborative teaching environment I believe there is no better place for executives seeking multicultural learning using a state of the art on-line environment to gain insight into effective leadership and global change management solutions” Gayle Allard IE Business School USA PhD University of California at Davis Managerial Economics “My most recent areas of focus include how the welfare state affects productivity as well as jobs, and what effect immigration flows have on the labour market It’s fascinating to see how implementing and even just administering these policies differently gives rise to very different results I’m also doing a lot of research and data mining on immigration because, with an aging population and a declining native population, that is becoming a real challenge for Europe.” Pablo Martin de Holan IE Business School Canada PhD McGill University, Canada Entrepreneurship “The entrepreneurial attitude is the power we all have to see things as they are and imagine them in a different way It is about seizing opportunities and changing businesses, communities, the world It is about life itself, creating something we did not know was possible with resources we did not know we had.” Eduardo Fernández-Cantelli IE Business School Spain PhD University of Minnesota Marketing “My academic and professional interests have evolved from deep involvement in sports My athletic background and exposure to the industry now come through in my competitive teaching style, challenging students to approach current marketing issues through innovation and teamwork I work from an athlete’s perspective, using the strengths of each individual to reach the common goal.” Mark Blyth Brown University Scotland PhD Columbia University Political Economy “Parts of the traditional MBA curriculum have been at the eye of the storm of the financial crisis Abstract and formal theory was seen as part of the problem rather than part of the solution What the IE Brown program does is to draw on the strengths of Brown, its depth in the historical sciences and the humanities, to put that theory in context, grounding and contextualizing the knowledge needed to perform in a networked economy.” Seth Rockman Brown University USA PhD University of California at Davies History “Global integration isn’t a product of the last two decades, but rather of the last five hundred years The financial and moral success of business in the twenty-first century is urgently connected to that history.” Joachim Krueger Brown University Germany PhD University of Oregon Psychology “Today’s international executive looks beyond traditional geographical and disciplinary boundaries The successful executive understands diverse perceptions, assumptions, and practices in light of their cultural context.” Angus Kingon Brown University South Africa PhD University of South Africa Entrepreneurship and Organizational Studies; Engineering “The imperative facing the leaders of today’s companies is to achieve and sustain growth This requires entrepreneurial leaders who can tap innovations from global sources to continuously create value for customers and society in a rapidly changing environment” Melani Cammett Brown University USA PhD University of California at Berkeley Political Science “It is impossible to understand the impact of globalization on the Global South without understanding the histories behind business-government-labor relations One of the many exciting things about the IE Brown collaboration is its attention to the roots of social and economic change – a focus that is so critical to future business leaders and yet is often lost in traditional business programs.” Sherine Hamdy Brown University USA PhD New York University Anthropology “What are the processes and rich sites of exploration between ethics and modernity? And how might they intersect with the contemporary global problems of the environment, the polarization between rich and poor, and great disparities in health and the quality of living? The IE Brown collaboration promises new ways to approach these types of questions, bringing in scholars from various disciplines to offer critical perspectives and to think through practical problem-solving.” International Representatives www.ie.edu/offices ARGENTINA - Buenos Aires argentina@ie.edu ECUADOR - Quito ecuador@ie.edu MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA mea@ie.edu AUSTRALIA - Sydney australia@ie.edu EGYPT - Cairo egypt@ie.edu PERU - Lima peru@ie.edu BRAZIL - São Paulo brasil@ie.edu GERMANY - Munich germany@ie.edu PORTUGAL - Lisbon portugal@ie.edu CHILE - Santiago de Chile chile@ie.edu INDIA - Mumbai india@ie.edu CHINA - Shanghai china@ie.edu ITALY - Milan italia@ie.edu RUSSIA & UKRAINE Moscow russia@ie.edu ukraine@ie.edu COLOMBIA & CENTRAL AMERICA - Bogota colombia@ie.edu centroamerica@ie.edu JAPAN - Tokyo japan@ie.edu MEXICO - Mexico City mexico@ie.edu UAE, QATAR, BAHRAIN & KUWAIT - Dubai uae@ie.edu UK & IRELAND - London uk@ie.edu SINGAPORE - Singapore singapore@ie.edu USA Los Angeles westcoast@ie.edu Miami southusa@ie.edu New York northeast@ ie.edu SOUTH KOREA - Seoul korea@ie.edu VENEZUELA - Caracas venezuela@ie.e IE Admissions Department María de Molina, 13 28006 Madrid, Spain Tel.: +34 91 568 96 10 Fax: +34 91 568 97 10 admissions@ie.edu www.iebrown.com IE Business School would like to extend its deepest thanks to all those students, alumni, faculty members, and other parties who appear in this brochure October 2011 www.ie.edu ... is fully accredited by the three leading accreditation agencies in the management education arena: AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA, guaranteeing the quality and academic rigor of our programs IE Business...
