Postgraduate study at QUT
Why choose QUT?
Here are some good reasons students
choose to undertake postgraduate study
at QUT:
Reputation
QUT is one of Australia’s leading
universities with 8400 postgraduate
students, including more than 2000
research students, among its total
enrolment of 41 000. QUT is a major
contributor to the creation of new
knowledge in its areas of research
strength. Our researchers address
complex problems and issues with
rigour and imagination.
Industry input
Course content is created in collaboration
with top industry professionals to
ensure courses are relevant to changing
industry needs. Opportunities for you
to gain professional experience through
workplace projects in industry in Australia
and overseas are built into our courses.
Flexibility
Many QUT courses allow for flexibility
when it comes to choosing when, where
and how you study. Depending on the
course you choose, you may be able to
attend classes in the evening, access
study materials online or undertake
flexible assessment options. Mid-year
entry may enable you to fast-track your
postgraduate study.
For more reasons to choose QUT for
postgraduate study visit www.qut.edu.au/
study/postgraduate-study
Course choices
You can complete your postgraduate
study through coursework or research.
Choosing the best option to suit you
primarily depends on your reasons
for study.
If you are interested in using study as a
way to change or advance your existing
career, then coursework study is ideal for
you. Postgraduate coursework programs
lead to graduate certificates, graduate
diplomas and masters qualifications.
Graduate certificates may be completed
in as little as one semester, graduate
diplomas in two semesters and masters
courses typically take between two and
six semesters (depending on the mode of
study selected, i.e. full-time or part-time).
Coursework programs are often ‘nested’
in design whereby, following successful
completion of a course, progression to
the next level of studies is automatic in the
next available teaching period.
QUT’s research programs meet the needs
of students, industry and the community
through supervised research training
that is collaborative, multidisciplinary and
purpose driven. Choose from a graduate
diploma, masters by research, professional
doctorate or Doctor of Philosophy.
Gardens Point campus
Gardens Point campus is a prime location
in Brisbane’s city centre, beside the
Brisbane River, City Botanic Gardens
and Parliament House—a position that
reinforces QUT’s links with business,
industry and government.
Gardens Point campus, with more
than 23 000 students, is within easy
walking distance of shops, restaurants,
theatres, galleries, and public transport
including buses, trains and its own
ferry stop. The Goodwill Bridge, a
pedestrian and cyclist bridge, links the
campus to South Bank Parklands and
the Queensland Cultural Centre.
QUT’s centre for the arts, the Gardens
Cultural Precinct, offers a full theatre
and exhibition program. QUT Creative
Industries productions in acting,
dance and music are presented at the
Gardens Theatre, in addition to work
by a wide range of visiting Australian
and international companies. QUT Art
Museum and the William Robinson Gallery
in historic Old Government House offer a
program of changing exhibitions.
An exciting new $230 million Science and
Engineering Centre, due for completion
in late-2012, will bring together teaching
and research in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics disciplines.
It will include stimulating learning and
research spaces, food and retail outlets,
and a 50-metre swimming pool and gym.
Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove
campuses are linked by a free shuttle bus.
For more information about your transport
options visit www.qut.edu.au/transport

Go global
Business graduates operate in a global market place and, as an internationally oriented
business school, we provide you with exposure to international environments and perspectives.
Whether it is through relevant curriculum and cases onshore, or the ability to undertake
exchanges, short-term programs or even compete in international competitions offshore, you
will find many opportunities to ensure you are ready for a global career.
Studying abroad can open up new and
rewarding opportunities. New friends,
new languages, new cultures and new
experiences mean that you will have a
great time and enhance your graduate
studies. More importantly, employers
are always looking for graduates who
can distinguish themselves from other
job candidates.
Studying overseas helps you develop the
international and intercultural perspectives
that they will be looking for. Living and
travelling overseas can be an exciting way
to gain professionally relevant skills in an
appropriate setting.
Student exchanges
Student exchanges enable you to spend
a semester or two studying with one of
our partner institutions. These studies will
count towards your QUT degree.
The QUT Business School partners
with some of the best institutions in the
world, many of which are ranked number
1 in their home country. If you want to
enhance your studies by spending time at
some of the best business schools in the
world, undertake an exchange as part of
your program.
For more information visit www.qut.edu.
au/business/courses-and-study/study-
overseas-and-exchange
Short-term programs
We understand that many of our students
have busy personal and professional
lives and are unable to undertake an
international exchange. To cater for your
needs, we support students to undertake
short-term programs (two to six weeks) at
a range of overseas partner institutions.
In 2011 more than 80 students travelled
to countries such as Croatia, France,
Germany, Norway, Denmark, Colombia
and Korea for short-term programs.
Study tours
Some programs, such as the MBA and
EMBA, offer students the opportunity to
undertake organised study tour programs.
Consult your degree program for more
information.
International business
competitions
We actively encourage and support
students to work together and use their
entrepreneurial skills and abilities to
compete with universities around the world
at international business competitions.
These initiatives are designed to enhance
the quality of entrepreneurship and
management education, to increase the
rate of success for new ventures, and to
extend national and international networks
for young entrepreneurs and educators.
Our student teams have successfully
represented the QUT Business School at
a range of competitions over the past few
years, competing in Thailand, India, the
United States, and Canada.
For example, the Mai Bangkok Business
Challenge at Sasin is Thailand’s premier
business plan competition. It was created
in 2002 to encourage postgraduate
students in business administration
programs across Thailand and Asia to
become more entrepreneurial.
Financial support
QUT recognises that travelling overseas
can be costly. Every year, QUT and
the QUT Business School support
students to participate in exchanges or
other international opportunities with
scholarships. Additional financial support
may be available to students who attend
a QUT Business School preferred partner
university. So just think, you can travel,
enhance your degree, develop your career
prospects and have QUT support you to
do so.
7
International double
masters
Would you like to attain two masters
degrees from triple-accredited institutions
in about the same time it would normally
take you to get just one? The QUT
Business School offers two international
double masters programs.
In an exchange study, you complete part
of your degree at one of two leading
institutions in Europe. Through cross-
crediting of your course content, you are
able to obtain the full degrees from both
institutions—and you may be able to
complete the double degree in the same
time that it would take you to complete
your QUT Master of Business program.
You continue to pay QUT fees during
your exchange program; there are no
additional study fees incurred.
Entry to these programs is limited and
competitive. For more information please
contact the QUT Business School Student
Centre or email bus@qut.edu.au
For more information about the QUT
Master of Business program, please refer
to page 18.
