By AISHWARYA ISHA (15510002) VIKAS SAINI (15511016) HOUSEHOLD CASE STUDIES Case Study Peeli Padav is a medium size village located in Haridwar District, Uttarakhand The village sits next to a local river called Peeli Ganga and is surrounded by Shivalik Mountains and forest To reach the village, one needs to take off from the national Highway and follow a very long and narrow road If a person doesn’t have his own means of transport then he may find little difficulty to reach the village Inside the village, there are few Pukka roads, one can find Kachha roads with big potholes on the way On the morning of 14th October 2015 we were taken to the Peeli Padav to conduct a survey about the village and its local residents The whole village was divided into six zones and the students were divided into group of two to survey different residences in each zone We were allotted Zone which was at centre of the village Soon after our bus dropped us at the nearest road leading up to our zone we went to the first house in our way We met a Middle aged woman who was busy making an earthen ‘Chulha’ We introduced ourselves and asked her if we could ask her some questions for our survey She welcomed us and offered us seats The woman’s name was Dharmo Devi and she was the wife of the Chaman who was the head of the Family They had two sons and the elder son was married and had a year old boy Their house was divided into various parts – a main residential unit comprising of the living rooms, a kitchen, a cowshed, a storage for grains and a separate toilet They had a huge ‘aangan’ infront of their house from where they could see their farmland The Aangan was shaded by Fruit trees and served as a beautiful place for family gatherings We were also sitting under the shade of the tree and talking to her Her grandson was sleeping on a wooden Charpoy The male members of the family were away at that time and we didn’t meet the daughter in law Fig : Dharmo Devi making an earthen a store room Upon talking to her we came to know that their ancestors had belonged to Himachal Pradesh but migrated to Peeli Padav some 50 years back in search of a better livelihood The parents were uneducated while their children were literate The grandson was suffering from some disease which gave him stunted growth and was bed ridden Their entire livelihood depends solely on farming They own approx 10 Bhigas farmland on which they grow various crops like rice, wheat and sugarcane They keep some amount of the crops for their consumption while they sell the rest of the remaining amount Last year the harvest was not much because of which they suffered huge losses They explained to us that harvesting more profitable crops like herbs and flowers was not feasible in the village because the monkeys and other wild animals would harm the harvest Their monthly income is less than Ten Thousand Rupees with very less savings Farming and cattle rearing takes up most of their time leaving little time for other activities Their only source of information is the television as they don’t get newspaper delivered at their home They used to go Doctor’s clinic to read newspaper The livestock in their house doesn’t provide sufficient milk which could be sold but provides only enough for family consumption The women of the house help the men in the farmlands and also the household chores After a while the elder son Joginder came home from outside along with his friends and joined in the conversation The mother returned to making the chulha while we finished asking him the questions He told us they liked celebrating festivals of Holi and Diwali and prepare Halwa, Puri and Kheer on such occasions For recreation the village boys would gather up on the riverside to play cricket He told us that he hasn’t not travelled very far and has only visited Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh Upon asking him if he faces any trouble because of staying in the village he replied, “the village life is much simpler and peaceful” He was happy to stay in the village which had very little traffic unlike the big cities and had almost no thefts The only trouble which he seemed to face was the lack of medical facilities in the village and the unavailability of mobile networks He seemed like a happy and contented man When we were leaving their house after finishing the questionnaire, the mother insisted that we have tea with them but due to lack of time we asked her for water instead Layout of the house Department of Architecture & Planning, Indian Institute of
