Biên dịch nâng cao, unit 1, Reference meaning PART 1: INTRODUCTORY NOTES 1. Reference Referential words are those that stand for something already said, or implied, in the text. Some of the commonest of these are it, that, this, which, these, those. Examples: • It’s possible to get angry and dismayed about what we’re doing to the world but it does not help. • He added that the world was already suffering as a result of climate change which was now unstoppable. • In as recent as 1950 the population of Africa was half that of Europe, now it is about equal. In 2050 it will be three times that of Europe. We have to change these trends. • Under a new European directive car manufactures are to be made responsible for dealing with their products at the end of their lives. A referential word can stand for a whole spoken or unspoken thought. It is therefore necessary for the students not to look at words such as this or that in isolation and to try to translate them both literally and idiomatically. For the Vietnamese translation to be natural, clear and formal, sometimes it is necessary if not compulsory to repeat at the referee or using a superordinate word, instead of simply using such words as “nó”, “cái mà”, as evident in the examples provided above.

concept (hàm số) - The more meanings a word has, the longer it takes to understand a text, and sometimes even context does not help This problem is associated with ambiguity or polysemy, which is inherent in most languages Readers of one language, especially those who wish to translate it, need to watch out for ambiguous elements, be it lexical or grammatical, in order to render a faithful message In other words, one of the key tasks of a translator is to determine correctly where polysemy or ambiguity is most likely to occur, and use appropriate wording to disambiguate his translation
