I. Learning outcome: By the end of this lesson, students will able to:

+ use the lexical items related to changes in transport systems, family groups and school life in Viet Nam in past and at present.

+ Listen and read for specific information about a conversation about the school in the past at Viet Nam (Scanning, skimming) and talks about changes to Ss’ school.

+ Practice listening and speaking with the lexical items related to the topic.

Structures:

+ Use adjectives to modify nouns and adverbs to modify verbs + Competencies:

- Form and/or improve such competencies as collaboration, teamwork, communication, presentation, problem solving, assessment, etc.

II. Materials and references: text book, lesson plan, chalk, sub-board, handouts, flash cards, pictures…

III. Anticipated problems: Students may not know many new words because they study in the modern school.

IV. Proposed solutions: teacher should prepare the lesson carefully and give the Ss clear instructions.

Contents WARM UP (5’)

Helping Ss to review the previous unit by asking them to play a game.

- T prepares pictures or a

slideshow of wonders (including caverns, fortresses, tombs, citadels, sculptures, monuments, palaces, etc) and shows the pictures one by one.

- Each time , the team that can call out the right word denoting the wonder shown wins a point.

- The game stops when all pictures / photos have been

shown. The team with more points wins.

- Works in 2 teams

LISTENING AND READING(15’)

Helping Students listen and read for general and specific information about the dialogue between Phuc, Duong and Tom

PRE-TASK:

1. Lead-in:

- T writes the words Past and Present - look at the title

Questions:

* Who can you see in the picture?

on the board and asks Ss to give another expression for phrase. When Ss have given the phrase “then and now” , T asks them to look at the picture and the heading “our school in the past” and ask them some questions.

- Encourage Ss to answer the questions. Their answers can be as simple as one word or phrase.

- T writes their ideas on the board.

- Playing the recording. Ss listen and read.

- Ask Ss if their predictions are correct

Exercise a:

- Have Ss work in pairs to label the pictures with the words given and allow pairs to share their answers.

- Asks some Ss to read the words /phrases aloud.

-T corrects their pronunciation if necessary.

Exercise b:

- Have Ss work independently.

- Have Ss share their answers with a partner before asking them to discuss a

class.

- Call some Ss to give their answers.

- T checks and confirms.

PRACTICE ( 15’)

Helping students practice asking and answering the questions from the dialogue. Practice the words relating the dialogue.

Activity C:

- Ask Ss to work individually and - Individual

- Have Ss to read the sentences and decide if they are true or false.

- Ask Ss to correct the false sentence.

- T writes the correct answers on the board.

Activity D:

- Ask Ss to do the exercise without reading the conversation again.

- Let Ss compare their answers with a classmate.

- After Ss finish the exercise, T asks them to check the answers by reading the dialogue again.

- T calls some Ss to give their answers.

- T checks and confirms.

Exercise 2:

- T asks Ss to read the REMEMBER box individually.

- T goes through the points as a class and see if any Ss can make sentences using these adjective and adverbs.

- Afterwards, T asks Ss to work individually on the gap-fill exercise.

- Check the answer as a class.

Activity D: Read the

conversation again and answer the questions.

Suggested answers:

1.The conversation takes place on the school ‘s 60th anniversary.

2. Beacause it explains a lot about how the school was in the past 3. There were trenches outside the classroom.

4. The roof was made of tiles and some tiles were broken. The window frames were made of wood and some of them were missing.

5. They can learnt that they are lucky to have such great learning facilities nowadays.

Exercise 2: Complete the sentence with a noun from the Remember box which has the same meaning as the words in the brakets.

Remember: when we want to Describe changes, we can use adjectives to modify nouns and adverbs to modify verbs.

Suggested answers:

SPEAKING ( 7’)

- Helping Student to able to speak in front of class about changes to their school.

Exercise 3:

- T asks Ss to think about their own school’s history.

- T have pairs to write a couple of questions about the school in the past that they would like to ask T. then as a whole class T can answer questions from Ss about the school when she/he started teaching.

- Have Ss to work in small groups to talk about the changes to the school.

- Asks Ss to use the adjectives and adverbs in REMEMBER box.

-T can tell Ss that they can talk.

- Pair work

- Groups of 4

Exercise 3:

Topic: changes to their school.

+ the school principal and school teachers

+ the school yard + the library

+ the computer room + the classroom

OUTCOME AND HOMEWORK(3’) - T calls 1 student to read aloud the

requests for next lesson.

- Ask Ss do some exercises in the work book. ( Unit 6)
