Thanh toán tín dụng là phương thức thanh toán phổ biến được sử dụng rộng rãi trên toàn thế giới. Giao dịch thanh toán này cần sự tham gia của ba bên chính: bên nhập khẩu, bên xuất khẩu và ngân hàng (hoạt động như là trung gian). Ngân hàng chịu trách nhiệm phát hành thư tín dụng thay mặt cho người nhập khẩu và cam kết thanh toán cho người xuất khẩu nếu họ đáp ứng các điều kiện do bên phát hành đặt ra. Phương thức thanh toán này có nhiều ưu điểm, chẳng hạn như cung cấp sự bảo đảm cho cả người mua và người bán, giảm rủi ro gian lận và dễ sử dụng. Tuy nhiên, nó cũng có một số nhược điểm, chẳng hạn như chi phí cao, quá trình thực hiện phức tạp và có thể gây tốn thời gian.
