Enabling MSO Advanced Services Delivery Today’s MSO customers are demanding always-on service without exception. While the telecommunications industry has long targeted 99.999% (five nines) service availability, CATV has traditionally been more ‘relaxed’ in its commitment to always-on availability. That attitude has changed. MSOs have become dedicated to reducing service downtime. They are focusing on scalability, requiring the ability to grow their systems, without major rebuilds. Flexibility and ease of expansion are also high on the list, as they're essential for continued growth. At ADC, we know the value that MSOs place on providing high-quality service to subscribers. We know that each and every deployment is crucial, that integration is extremely difficult and that it takes a tremendous amount of resources to provide always-on service without exception every time. ADC's RF Worx ® SignalOn ® Series platform enables operators to reconfigure and balance the network without disrupting high-value traffic. Featuring patented "make-before-break" hitless attenuation technology and best-in-class technical specifications, the RF Worx platform is central to a finely tuned yet flexible network infrastructure. All products feature excellent RF performance, quality and reliability. ADC also has products for the RF network that enable MSOs to add and expand services quickly and maintain RF signal quality, in a true end-to-end broadband solution. AV Management ADC offers a complete line of accessories to accompany our audio and video patch panels and other products, including patch cords, connectors, designation strip kits and many other items. ADC offers two lines of very high-quality video patch cords: the patented ST ™ series capable of handling uncompressed high-definition digital video and the VX™ series for analog and serial digital video Data Management Historically, MSOs only had a small number of data cables in the headend, mostly connecting computers to the network. But today, IP-based data is a large part of the headend, especially to provide high-speed Internet services. Because of the increased demand for high-speed data, cable management solutions must be incorporated for structured cabling solutions. Offering data-based services requires the cable operator to transport traffic from the Internet Service Providers to each server and onto the cable modem transport system (CMTS) to customers. As with other areas of the ideal headend, the data-center portion of the network must be completely flexible and scalable. In fact, data delivery has become so important to today’s MSOs, the ideal headend is beginning to transition from just housing RF signal management equipment into resembling an actual data center. Ethernet-based data services offer MSOs the opportunity to create differentiation, command premium pricing and earn higher margin for such value-added data services as transparent LANs. Circuit-to-Packet Telephony Solution For over 60 years, ADC has provided innovative, high- quality solutions for twisted pair and coax-based DS1 and DS3 networks, ensuring a robust, flexible network. Cable congestion can compromise network integrity; ADC’s DSX-1 and DSX-3 products ensure proper cable routing and simplify routine testing and maintenance. This contributes directly to the reliability and functionality of the network and controlling operational costs. In a typical cable system, circuit-switched telephony is accomplished by headend equipment that “talks” to a telephone switch at a telephone company’s central office. However, with the advent of IP telephony, those systems are rapidly migrating to some form of packetized transport. Telephony is exiting the days of circuit switching and entering the new world of packetized switching and routing. Power Distribution Building a future-proof headend begins with ensuring you have the necessary power distribution facilities in place to support new equipment and services. The type of power required will be determined by the services to be delivered across the system. However, MSOs planning to deliver telephony services over IP (which include lifeline or E-911 services) will have to change their power structure. Fusing power to active network elements such as the CMTS, amplifiers, laser transmitters and return path receivers is crucial in maintaining consistent and safe operation of the DC-powered gear. ADC PowerWorx ® products distribute DC power and provide protection for critical network gear. Next Generation Network Solutions for the MSO Market Deep Fiber Deployment New FTTP technologies require a new approach to the outside plant. There is more fiber to manage; there is greater need for physical layer access; and the network must be designed for future expansion and upgrades. Deploying a successful FTTP network requires careful planning and execution. Taking FTTP networks from the lab/field trial mode to full-scale network deployment presents many significant challenges for service providers. One of these challenges is deploying the network for the of best possible cost, while creating a fiber network infrastructure that has the flexibility and reliability to last long into the future. ADC’s OmniReach™ FTTP Infrastructure Solutions are the industry’s first platforms designed from the ground up to meet the unique requirements of FTTP networks. Fiber Management The ideal headend will be designed not only to enable cable operators the flexibility to add new subscribers, but also easily reconfigure the network to adapt to customer churn. Fiber-cable management is broken down into a few key principles, the first of which is to develop clear routing paths that are obvious to any technician at a glance. In other words, routing the fiber correctly should be intuitive and easily accomplished. ADC’s industry-standard fiber distribution frames and panel products provide the ultimate environment to protect fiber cables. MSOs can alleviate cable congestion concerns by implementing a cable-management system to manage and store excess fibers. These components encourage proper cable management and preserve signal and network integrity. Consulting and Support There may be instances when your organization needs assistance with network builds and upgrades. ADC’s unique experience in multivendor, multitechnology and multiservice solutions makes ADC the ideal choice for projects that require an in-depth, hands- on understanding of simple to complex network environments. • Planning Services • Deployment Services • Maintenance Services ADC Professional Services offers comprehensive solutions for network operators delivering voice, video and data services over wireless, wireline and cable networks.
