With The New Community Rules, you'll understand how social web technologies work, and learn the most practical and effective ways to reach people who frequent these sites Written by an expert in social media and viral marketing, this book cuts GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 60 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH Noun clauses are subdivided into kinds: That-clauses, Wh-question clauses, and Yes/No question clause Example 11: In the sentence: “It’s amazing what talking with people can do.” [39] This sentence has the independent clause “It’s amazing”, and the noun clause “what talking with people can do.” The clause “what talking with people can do” is a complement of the adjective “amazing” Suggested version: “Thật tuyệt vời nói chuyện với người làm điều đó.” Example 12: In the sentence: “One of the primary objectives for many social media marketing campaigns is to increase traffic, either among a relevant audience, or in a general effort to gain more eyeballs with the hopes that a fraction of them will be relevant.” [3] The word “that” appears after the noun “hopes” as a noun phrase “the hopes that a fraction of them will be relevant.” => That clause of Noun clause Suggested version: “Một mục tiêu hàng đầu nhiều chiến dịch quảng cáo truyền thông xã hội tăng lưu lượng truy cập, số lượt truy cập có liên quan , nỗ lực chung để đạt nhiều lượt xem với hy vọng phần nhỏ số có liên quan.” Example 13: In the sentence: “Who is likely to buy my product or participate in my service offering?” [51] Beginning with a question word “Who” to ask for information of “likely to buy my product or participate in my service offering” => Wh-question of Noun clause Suggested version: GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 61 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH “Ai mua sản phẩm tham gia vào chương trình dịch vụ tơi.” Example 14: In the sentence: “Instead, he contacted numerous blogs and asked if they would consider reviewing his products on their sites.” [27] In this sentence, the clause “if they would consider reviewing his products on their sites” is dependent noun clause that are formed yes/no question and is introduced by the subordinator “if” => If/whether clause of Noun clause Suggested version: “Thay vào đó, anh liên lạc với nhiều blog hỏi liệu họ có xem xét sản phẩm trang web họ hay không.”  Relative clause A relative clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a noun phrase, most commonly a noun There are two types of relative clause: - Defining Relative Clauses Defining relative clauses (also called identifying relative clauses or restrictive relative clauses) give detailed information defining a general term or expression Defining relative clauses are not put in commas - Non-Defining Relative Clauses Non-defining relative clauses (also called non-identifying relative clauses or non-restrictive relative clauses) give additional information on something, but not define it Non-defining relative clauses are put in commas Example 15: In the sentence GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 62 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH “In this case, you are aiming for two different goals: reputation management and new links that will emphasize other relevant pages in the search engine results.” [1] The clause “that will emphasize other relevant pages in the search engine results” is a subordinate clause which refers to “reputation management and new links” in the clause before, so it modifies “reputation management and new links” Suggested version: “Trong trường hợp này, bạn nhắm đến hai mục tiêu khác nhau: quản trị danh tiếng liên kết mà làm bật trang có liên quan khác kết cơng cụ tìm kiếm.” Example 16: In the sentence “For example, at a recent conference I attended, a disability website marketing director complained that her extremely social media–friendly content, which earned hundreds of thousands of visitors in a short period of time via social news site Digg, was not converting into real long-term visitors who would stay on the site and engage with the actual disability site subject matter.” [5] The clause “which earned hundreds of thousands of visitors in a short period of time via social news site Digg” is a subordinate clause which refers to “her extremely social media–friendly content” in the clause before, so it modifies “her extremely social media–friendly content” to express more information Suggested version: “Ví dụ, hội nghị gần tơi tham dự, giám đốc tiếp thị trang web cho người khuyết tật phàn nàn viết thân thiện với truyền thông xã hội, kiếm hàng trăm ngàn khách truy cập khoảng thời gian ngắn thông qua trang web tin tức xã hội Digg cô, không GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 63 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH chuyển đổi thành thời gian thực người truy cập lại trang web ăn khớp với chủ đề thực tế người khuyết tật.” Example 17: In the sentence: “Individuals who post negatively about your product are those who are passionate enough about it to share their dissatisfaction with their readers; they also are looking for people willing and ready to listen.”[39] The clause “who post negatively about your product are those who are passionate enough about it to share their dissatisfaction with their readers” is a subordinate clause which refers to the word before “Individual”, so it modifies “Individual” And in the clause “who are passionate enough about it to share their dissatisfaction with their readers” is a subordinate clause which refers to the word before “those”, so it modifies “who post negatively about your product” Suggested version: “Những cá nhân đăng tiêu cực sản phẩm bạn người đủ đam mê để chia sẻ khơng hài lịng sản phẩm với độc giả họ; họ tìm kiếm người có thiện ý sẵn sàng lắng nghe.”  Adverbial clauses Adverbial clause is a dependent clause introduced by a subordinating conjunction The subordinating conjunction shows the relationship between the adverbial clause and the rest of the sentence in term of time, place, reason, purpose, manner, result etc Example 18: In the sentence: “Your objectives should be specific so that you will know exactly how (and if) you’ve achieved your goal.”[44] => Adverbial clause of purpose GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 64 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH The clause “so that you will know exactly how (and if) you’ve achieved your goal” is a subordinate clause which refers to the clause “Your objectives should be specific”, so it modifies the clause before Suggested version: “Các mục tiêu bạn nên cụ thể để bạn biết xác làm (và liệu) bạn có đạt mục tiêu hay khơng.” Example 19: In the sentence: “Since forums have preceded many social networks, study the behaviors of the forum members.” [52] => Adverbial clause of reason The clause “Since forums have preceded many social networks” is a subordinate clause which refers to the clause “study the behaviors of the forum members”, so it modifies the clause after Suggested version: “Vì diễn đàn đời trước nhiều mạng xã hội, nên nghiên cứu hành vi thành viên diễn đàn.” Example 20: In the sentence: “You should have an understanding of the emotional dynamic before you dive into the pool, so learn to swim first.” [53] => Adverbial clause result The clause “so learn to swim first” is a subordinate clause which refers to the clause “You should have an understanding of the emotional dynamic before you dive into the pool”, so it modifies the first clause Suggested version: “Bạn nên có hiểu biết động lực cảm xúc trước bạn học lặn phải học bơi trước.” Example 21: In the sentence: GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 65 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH “After exploring this question and studying the social sites that feature content that was well received for particular topics, you can get a feel of the style and type of content that you should craft for your target audience.” [55] => Adverbial clause of time The clause “After exploring this question and studying the social sites that feature content that was well received for particular topics” is a subordinate clause which refers to the clause “you can get a feel of the style and type of content that you should craft for your target audience”, so it modifies the clause after Suggested version: “Sau khám phá câu hỏi nghiên cứu trang web xã hội có nội dung đón nhận tốt cho chủ đề cụ thể, bạn cảm nhận phong cách loại nội dung mà bạn nên làm cho khán giả mục tiêu mình.” Example 22: In the sentence: “For more information on community involvement and how to establish yourself as a valued member of any online community, see Chapter 4.” [52] => Adverbial clause of manner The clause “as a valued member of any online community” is a subordinate clause which refers to the clause “For more information on community involvement and how to establish yourself”, so it modifies the clause before Suggested version: “Để biết thêm thông tin tham gia cộng đồng cách thiết lập thân bạn thành viên có giá trị cộng đồng trực tuyến nào, xem Chương 4.”  Participial phrase GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 66 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH A participle is word that is formed a verb and used as an adjective to modify nouns There are two kinds of participles: present participle (active voice verb) and past participle (passive voice verb) Participial phrases are groups of words that contain participles + other modifiers Participial phrases can be formed by reducing relative clauses adverbial clauses Example 23: In the sentence: “In many instances, visitors are not interacting with the website and will only be interested in the content being shared directly through social channels.” [5] => Participial phrase from relative clause In this sentence, we have reduced relative clause The clause “being shared directly through social channels” is reduced relative clause The relative pronoun was reduced If I reproduce the clause as “In many instances, visitors are not interacting with the website and will only be interested in the content that is being shared directly through social channels.” Suggested version: “Trong nhiều trường hợp, khách truy cập không tương tác với trang web quan tâm đến nội dung chia sẻ trực tiếp thông qua kênh xã hội.” GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 67 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH CHAPTER 4: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 4.1 Difficulties This graduation paper is a good opportunity for me to train my skills and practise my knowledge which I learned during the past years I learned many things about translation through this paper Furthermore, the analysis is a fantastic chance for me to enhance my abilities, skills and search more deeply about the modern and postmodern education Besides, I also acquired more useful experiences about translating However there are many difficulties that I facea with in implementing the analysis During the process of translating this graduation paper, despite having got some knowledge about environmental health terms, I still had many difficulties in vocabulary and grammar to offer the best translation from English to Vietnamese, as follows: Firstly, I had a trouble about phrases and vocabulary in Marketing It was so complex that I couldn’t understand this I spent much time on reading books, searching internet and using difference dictionaries so that I can find suitable words Moreover, there are many terms I have never seen before, it’s so hard to translate them, so some versions weren’t smooth Secondly, there are too many vocabularies and phrases of marketing field in the analysis which I cannot look up in dictionaries in this document It makes me difficult to give an exact meaning of a particular field Besides, some words have multiple meanings and the meanings of these words depend on the contexts Therefore, I can’t identify the suitable meaning Hence, it takes me a lot of time to analyze and to search for exact meanings As a result, my suggested version also sounds not smooth and natural Thirdly, grammar is also a very hard element that I must pay double attention because there are differences of grammar between two languages There are many structures that are very popular in English but not existed in GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 68 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH Vietnamese, for example empty subject structure So translating this structure is a challenge for translators because they must understand the author’s idea, then use other structures in Vietnamese to express Fourthly, many sentences with difficult structures make me difficult to analyze Although I look up dictionaries and grammar books, I cannot understand clearly the use of types of sentences Hence, it takes me a lot of time to complete this suggested version Finally, when I carried out the analysis, I was stressed and worried about the deadline, so I was affected in mental and health, which made the analysis not efficient In brief, it is uneasy to translate a text successfully To have exact version, translators have deep knowledge not only about the field that they are translating, but also about structure, lexis in both two languages 4.2 Solutions During the translating process of my graduation paper, I overcame difficulties and challenges in translating part 2, 3, with title “Asking the Right Questions: Setting Goals for your Campaign”, “Making your goals smart”, and “Researching your social media community” in the chapter “Goal setting in the social environment” Now I would like to offer some solutions that help me finish my graduation paper Firstly, I read some good graduation papers in the library and directions of my department to master the process and the way of implementing the paper After that I read the whole chapter to understand its general content Secondly, before translating, I found a document about online marketing to understand clearly content From this I could choose the style of translation for the paper I researched the grammatical structures It helped me reduce the mistakes when I arranged words and phrases in translation version to be suitable to the terminologies and writing style in Vietnamese GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 69 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH Thirdly, I had to use a lot of different dictionaries such as Oxford dictionary, Lac Viet dictionary, English-English-Vietnamese dictionary, etc , Internet, books, newspapers to translate some difficult words However, some words were not available in those; others did not suit the content of the text Therefore, I thought that it was important to depend on the content in translation Fourthly, I began to establish a plan: how much time I had to complete the translation, how long I analyzed a structure, etc Everyday, I divided my work into a lot of parts, each of which I tried to complete as soon as Obviously, during the translating process whenever I did not understand any words, concepts or structures, I often asked the opinion, the advice of my supervisor – Mrs Nguyen Thi Bich Giang, who has guided enthusiastically me She often led me to the best translated version Finally, I usually played sports, relaxed, and chated with my friends, which made me better to complete the analysis GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 70 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH PART C: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS Summary of the Findings After completing this graduation paper, I not only gained a lot of precious experiences but also faced many difficulties These are many new words in this text which I could not determine the suitable meaning with the context Because dictionaries have many equivalent meanings, I had to look up them in different dictionaries, even research in many sources (such as: books, internet, etc) in order to select out the best suitable meaning for the context I spent a lot of time doing this work Although I was not really confident in translating and analyzing the structures in this chapter, I knew more knowledge about educational section and valuable things through the process Anyway, I think that this is a good chance for me to improve my major English as well as my skills and abilities for my career in the future Besides, the structures in this chapter are quite difficult Although I have learned them in four years at Duy Tan University, I don’t also have enough confidence to translate and analyze them However, it also helps me obtain some more knowledge about English advanced grammar and improve some translated skills Suggestions After finishing my graduation paper, I have some suggestions for Duy Tan University in general and Department of Foreign Languages in particular The first, I think that translation is an important subject It helps students practise their translation ability Therefore, the department should increase time for students so that they can practice skills, improve the knowledge and advance their translating ability The second, some major subjects such as Translation theory, Translation and 2, Syntax, Advances Grammar should be more concerned GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 71 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH because they are very indispensable to students during the process of doing the graduation paper Moreover, one of the disadvantages of students is that they have less vocabulary and knowledge of English grammar is not enough So, teachers should require students to have the analyzing habit on reading any English sentence to focus on the grammar and vocabulary as well as give them more homework to develop skills and knowledge Finally, I hope the curriculum of Duy Tan University will have a few subjects which are similar to PBL 496 (Project-Based Learning) so that students can practice many large projects This will help them have experiences and confidence before beginning an important project as the graduation paper GRADUATION PAPER Student: HUYNH THI THUY TRAM GIANG, M.A 72 Supervisor: NGUYEN THI BICH REFERENCES BOOKS [1] Bùi Tiến Bảo, Đặng Xuân Thu (1999)
