Soneplex ® WDM Quad Loop Extender Module (WQLX) The Soneplex Single Fiber Quad Loop Extender (WQLX) module converts four multiplexed DS1 signals into an optical DS2 using wave division multiplexing (WDM) optics. Similar to ADC’s Quad Loop Extender (QLX), the WQLX transports the signal over single mode fiber, but uses only one fiber instead of two. The same module is also used at the remote end to convert the optical DS2 back into four DS1s at the customer premises. ADC’s Soneplex system is the lowest total cost solution to expand local loop business services. In addition to HDSL, HDSL2, HDSL4, traditional T1 repeater and optical DS2 technologies, Soneplex‘s advanced diagnostics and management functions allow maximum control and visibility throughout local networks. Focused on flexible, end-to-end solutions, the Soneplex system approach provides robust, cost-effective transmission and access over either fiber or copper, using a single platform. Features: • Saves existing fiber plant by using half the fiber of other modules • 1+1 protection switching • 1310/1550 nm single fiber optical laser transport with optical budget of 18 dB • Extensive network management with a Soneplex Shelf Controller Unit • Supports central office and remote applications • Central office and remote alarm capability 2 www.adc.com • +1-952-938-8080 6/02 • 4085 Soneplex Quad Loop Extender Module Description The protected mode requires a pair of WQLX modules at each end of the circuit. In a 1+1 line protected system, identical traffic is transmitted across both the working and protect paths. Up to seven unprotected or protected systems can be deployed from a single Soneplex Loop Extender system. The Soneplex WQLX module is a fiber loop converter that provides cost-effective, reliable transmission of four DS1 signals at distances up to approximately 22 miles (18 dB budget). The system can be configured for either protected or unprotected service. The WQLX provides extensive alarms and diagnostic capabilities. Protection Switching: Protection is accomplished using automatic protection switching (APS). APS is completed within 50 ms of the decision and occurs when: • A module fail condition occurs or the module is removed while on-line • An optical failure occurs (optical loss of signal (LOS), optical out of frame (OOF), optical bit error rate (BER) threshold exceeded) • DS1 transmitter failure occurs The unprotected mode requires one WQLX module per four DS1s installed in the Soneplex Loop Extender chassis at the central office and one WQLX module at the customer (remote) end. For flexibility, the same system can also support copper transmission from the same chassis. The Soneplex Loop Extender is located in the building basement or a closet, feeding one or more customers in the building. The WQLX module is ideal for low-density T1 based applications such as PCS cell sites and building risers. PCS Cell Sites With the installation of the Soneplex Loop Extender system in the central office, a local exchange carrier or a remote PCS service provider can serve a remote cell site using a WQLX remote module and a two or four position chassis. As the PCS market continues to expand, the ability to establish cell sites and initiate service quickly is essential. Since most sites require one or two T1 lines, the Soneplex Loop Extender with the WQLX is ideal. A majority of cellular sites are constructed with 24 VDC sources as the primary power supply. The requirement to feed this growing application over a fiber network demands a system operating with a 24 VDC power feed. ADC has developed unique WQLX modules to serve this application. The functionality is identical to the -48VDC versions of the WQLX.
