All Rights Reserved An Equal Opportunity Employer Description ADC has designed a family of Fiber Loop Converters (FLCs) that provides a cost-effective alternative to deploying service over copper while avoiding the high capital investment of DS3 fiber optic terminals. This family includes products designed for economical distri- bution of single or multiple DS1s. The Quad FLC multiplexes up to four T1s for transport over two fibers at distances of 16 to 20 miles (26 to 33 km). The QFLC system consists of a rack mounted central office chassis and a wall mounted customer premises chassis. In contrast to M12/M13 fiber optic terminal sys- tems (FOTS), which require a variety of modules to start up operation, the QFLC mod- ule is a stand-alone system and does not require additional plug-in equipment. The QFLC was designed to be installed quickly. Plug, play and walk away installation is a reality with the QFLC. Extensive, built-in self-test circuitry allows the QFLC to isolate module failures and alert maintenance personnel via standard office alarms. The optional microprocessor unit (MPU), residing in the 8 position rack mount chassis, collects alarm information from all remote and local QFLC modules for connection to alarm surveillance equipment with a Telemetry Byte Oriented Serial Interface (TBOS). The QFLC supports 1+1 redundancy to protect against single point failures of both opti- cal facilities or electronic equipment. The QFLC features two sets of bit error rate (BER) threshold select switches. These switches enable the user to select the BER at which the module will 1) declare a minor alarm to indicate that the BER has exceeded an early warning level and 2) initiate protection switching in a system configured in a protect mode. The BER threshold at which protection switching occurs may be set according to the performance levels guaranteed to your customers. All of ADC’s FLC products feature the option to provide 60 mA simplex current, which can be turned on and off by the user depending on the needs of a particular installation. This feature allows the QFLC to supply span current on a DS1 output to power channel service units (CSUs) or • Chassis supports optical hubs and is compatible with ADC’s entire FLC family of O/E products Mechanical housing can accommodate a wide variety of plug-in modules. From single DS1 to multiple DS1s, or mixing DS1s with DS3s, the chassis provides a broad platform from which new services can be delivered. A variety of high capacity circuits can now be distributed from a single chassis. • Single module system No need to inventory different working and protect modules, or different near and far-end modules. One part number does it all, reducing investment in spare inventory and simplifying circuit provisioning and installa tion. • Optional 1+1 redundancy Protection against fiber facility or equipment failures. Unprotected circuits can be upgraded later to provide protection, thereby lowering the initial cost of installation. • Dual selectable BER threshold setting Provides selectable BER thresholds for protection switching and early warning minor alarm. Switching and minor alarm levels can be set according to service requirements. • 60 mA simplex current on DS1 outputs Provides span power on an as needed basis for powering network interface devices or channel service units. This eliminates the need for most span powering repeaters at the customer premises, saving money and installation time. Features and Benefits QFLC and Mounting Chassiss 437 10/97 Original © 1997 ADC Telecommunications, Inc. All Rights Reserved An Equal Opportunity Employer Features and Benefits (cont'd) • Remote (far-end) alarms can be displayed locally Simplifies trouble diagnostics and allows single-ended trouble shooting. This reduces field dispatches and improves responsiveness to potential service interruption. • Remote housekeeping alarm transport Housekeeping alarm inputs provide monitoring of external equipment at the remote site, such as fire and door alarms. Reduces investment in external alarm reporting systems. • Individual DS1 remote loop back capability Allows single-ended testing of each DS1 link to aid in trouble sectionalization. • Redundant AC power converters at customer premises Two AC/DC converters are available in the wall mount chassis to ensure that service is not interrupted if a supply should fail. For an enterprise in today’s highly competitive world, communications and the ability to effectively manage information are seen as strategic components in developing and maintaining a competitive edge. Growing demands for faster service, more features and higher quality mean that service providers must design a migration strategy for their networks that not only addresses today’s needs but also anticipates tomorrow’s. The Quad Fiber Loop Converter provides a solid foundation for future products and services. By installing the chassis at a central location, service providers can support multiple customers in a variety of applications. Since the chassis supports all FLC modules, including the DS3 FLC, modules can be mixed or matched depending on service requirements. Described on the following pages are several applications which take advantage of the flexibility in the Fiber Loop Converter sys- tem. The QFLC allows the service provider to take advan- tage of any unused fiber already terminated at the building premises, thereby providing T1 service in the most economical means possible. By using the span power option on the QFLC, the service provider can eliminate the need for an additional office or span repeater to power the customer’s equipment. As the customer’s service requirements become more critical, the service provider can install an additional QFLC on each end of the link to fully protect the system. Referencing the application drawing below, you can see many possible configurations that allow for fiber drops on each floor. An M13 FOTS can be located in the basement of a high rise building and the DS1s can be deployed to the various floors of the building via QFLC modules. A series of wall mount chassis can be mounted in the wiring closets of each floor. In all situations, an AC power recep- tacle is all that is required to power the units; battery back- up is also available.
