technology From on-line classes to the Web library, embracing new technology is crucial to CUNY’ success s City University of New York Providing a high-quality, Providing Access to Academic Excellence As a public institution of higher learning, the City University of New York’s mandate is to offer a powerful academic program at affordable costs CUNY’s roots date back to 1847, with the founding of the Free Academy by Townsend Harris The mission of that institution, as he put it, was to “Open the doors to all—let the children of the rich and poor take seats together and know of no distinction save that of industry, good conduct and intellect.” Then, as today, its mission was to “educate the whole people”—to uphold a commitment to academic FROM A COLLEGE ON MANHATTAN’S POSH PARK AVENUE TO A SPRAWLING BEACHFRONT CAMPUS IN BROOKLYN, CUNY OFFERS STUDENTS A RICH, DIVERSE ARRAY OF MORE THAN 900 PROGRAMS excellence while providing equal access to, and opportunity for, education Yongsoo Ha, Director of Academic Computing and Law School Systems, wanted to make sure the latest CUNY data cabling installation would support the University’s future needs The City University of New York CUNY is the largest urban university and the third largest public university system in the United States With more than 200,000 students in nearly 300 degree programs on its 20 campuses (and more than 150,000 students in adult and continuing education programs), CUNY offers a vast array of educational opportunities to diverse populations CUNY campuses serve as indispensable cultural, social and educational resources to the surrounding communities Alumni—from Gen Colin Powell and comedian Jerry Seinfeld to novelist Oscar Hijuelos, Nobel Laureate Rosalyn Yalow and 10 other Nobel Laureates—excel in every field of human endeavor Additionally, more American chief executive officers have graduated from CUNY than any other baccalaureate-granting institution Its extraordinary faculty features world-renowned scholars teaching THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK NOW BOASTS 10 SENIOR COLLEGES, SIX COMMUNITY COLLEGES, A DOCTORAL-GRANTING GRADUATE SCHOOL, A LAW SCHOOL, AN ACCELERATED MEDICAL PROGRAM AND A MEDICAL SCHOOL courses on all levels, from introductory undergraduate classes to small graduate seminars in CUNY’s nationally-ranked doctoral programs Tools for Education The computer age and the Internet have radically changed the college experience in the past few years Virtual classrooms (including on-line registration, lebrary access and report cards), quizzes over the Internet and networked dormitory rooms are just a few examples of how colleges and universities have leveraged technology to both enhance the learning experience and create efficient academic administration To provide such services, CUNY needed to ensure that the infrastructure would be able to support such diverse and demanding applications Yongsoo Ha knew that their infrastructure would need to be improved “We were beginning to call upon our network to more and more, yet we had not updated the cabling system in almost 10 years Response time was slow and users had to wait much longer than they TO PROVIDE A QUALITY EDUCATION.” YONGSOO HA, CUNY Rapid Advancement More users, new applications, faster Internet connections and efficient and reliable data transfer were prime considerations in choosing products to build CUNY’s School of Law’s new network “Starting with a good foundation made perfect sense to me We wanted to install a system that supported both current and future applications…one we could put in the wall and forget about,” stated Bill Darios, Network Administrator CUNY’s School of Law looked at several system offerings available on the market and chose the TrueNet solution from KRONE Opting for KRONE’s C6T solution, which is an Anixter Levels XP compliant solution, CUNY’s School of Law was impressed by the performance capabilities of the KRONE products—both in electrical performance and data carrying capacity According to Yongsoo Ha, “We wanted a system that was perfect from one end to the other KRONE’s C6T, we felt, was as good as they came Made by one company, KRONE’s unequalled warranty program tells me that they believe in, and stand by, their products and systems.” Post-Installation ACR -10 Attenuation NEXT Attn Cat 5e NEXT Cat today’s applications require Network performance is determined by the interaction between transceivers (active components such as hubs, switches and NICs) and the cabling system (passive components such as cable, patch cords and connectors) Levels XP solutions are more forgiving of marginally–performing active components, so a larger portion of the data sent is transported successfully ERROR THE SAME—TO SUPPLY CUSTOMERS WITH HIGH QUALITY, STATE-OF-THEART PRODUCTS AND SERVICES 23 Warranty TrueNet is the first cabling system solution to offer a warranty that addresses what’s really important to the network user: throughput Other cabling warranties offer “application assurance.” This means that the link light will go on, but it does NOT ensure you that your system will run efficiently With TrueNet, you can be assured that your new cabling system channel will not cause bit errors, which rob your system of throughput Plus, after the installation of your new TrueNet system (greater than 250 nodes), KRONE technicians visit and perform active testing at the installed site to make sure that everything is running as it should This even includes your active equipment! TrueNet can offer this remarkable guarantee because all products are designed and tested using active network technology that evaluates the performance of a new cabling system as if there were a live network in place This ensures that not only the TIA/EIA passive criteria are met, but also the IEEE specifications—which are critical for throughput performance 24 OFFERING THE INDUSTRY’S FIRST THROUGHPUT WARRANTY, KRONE ASSURES ZERO BIT ERRORS OVER THE PASSIVE COMPONENTS FOR A FULL 5-YEAR RENEWABLE PERIOD, PLUS A SEPARATE 20-YEAR ELECTRICAL PERFORMANCE, APPLICATION ASSURANCE AND PRODUCT WARRANTY 25 TESTING PARAMETERS INCLUDE: Passive Testing Channel Impedance Min Voltage/Amplitude Jitter Delay Skew Noise Link Impedance Oversized/Undersized Packets PSNEXT CRC Errors PSACR Interference PSELFEXT Interframe Gap Active Testing Rise Time/Fall Time Alignment Fragments Return Loss Network Load/Live Testing Differential Impedance Insertion Loss Deviation TrueNet warranties cover all aspects of the cabling system: patch cords, horizontal cable, patch panels and jacks Additionally, KRONE will report to you in the course of the warranty verification if any active devices are not performing within IEEE specifications 26 - 0 - A N I X T E R • a n i x t e r c o m Worldwide Headquarters: Anixter Inc., 4711 Golf Road, Skokie, IL 60076-1278 • 847/677-2600 #xxxxxx 10K 06/01–xx Printed in U.S.A on Recycled Paper 1S0004X0 © 2001 Anixter Inc ... embracing new technology is crucial to CUNY’ success s City University of New York Providing a high-quality, Providing Access to Academic Excellence As a public institution of higher learning, the City. ..
