In response to growing global demand in both the Access and Premises markets, KRONE Australia has developed a 25 pair HIGHBAND module. As the R&D Centre of Competence for the Indo-Pacific region and one of only two A- Class manufacturers in the KRONE group, we were the obvious choice to develop and manufacture the HIGHBAND 25. HIGHBAND 25 is a high-density cross-connect solution that will set new standards for network performance and functionality. An integral part of the new Premis NET ® GLOBAL LEADER solution, HIGHBAND 25 is backed by our TrueNet ™ Zero Bit Error guarantee for maximum data throughput. The HIGHBAND 25 module is the only 25 pair module available on the market that features the unique KRONE 45°, silver plated contact principle and disconnect feature, which allows for “Patch by Exception”(PBE). Utilising the PBE method, network managers can decrease installation costs and improve cabling methods at the cross-connect. KRONE’s patented LSA-PLUS ® , 45° contacts offer an integrated Insulation Displacement Connection (IDC) system for mechanical and electrical connection. Special attention to maximum contact reliability regardless of climatic and ambient conditions results in a high degree of technical security through a gas-tight, low resistance joint. The new HIGHBAND 25 solution performs well beyond the recently released Category 6 standard. The HIGHBAND 25 module combined with innovative patch cordage, superior cable management, excellent labelling facilities and the ever-reliable KRONE LSA-PLUS ® contact principle, results in a solution that provides network administrators with the peace of mind that they have purchased the best structured cabling products available. The HIGHBAND 25 solution comprises: HIGHBAND 25 MODULE Colour coded for ease of termination, the HIGHBAND 25 module allows six, four pair (Category 6) cables to be terminated. There is also a variant available that is numbered 1 to 25 for termination of 25 pair cables. The contact is silver plated and positioned at 45° to the axis of the wire. This ensures maximum copper conductor remains at the point of wire termination. The contacts have constant torsional restoring forces ensuring a gas tight termination on the wire conductor. As with all LSA-PLUS contacts, there are clamping ribs on the plastic housing to ensure mechanical integrity of the connection and to remove any stress caused by movement of the wire. The HIGHBAND 25 is a disconnect module, which means that the top and bottom rows of the module are connected by two contacts pressed against each other. The disconnect feature allows for Patch by Exception (PBE), ease of testing, quick disconnect of faulty computers from the network and ease of monitoring of network performance. REAR CABLE MANAGER The rear cable manager provides cable management for incoming cables and makes installation easier. The incoming cables are simply routed through the slots provided and are held in place by built in clips. The slots direct the cable to the point of termination and hold the cable whilst each pair of wires is terminated. This eliminates the need for velcro ties to hold the cable to the module. MOUNTING FRAME The 300 pair mounting frame is made from high- grade stainless steel, providing strength and corrosion resistance. The frame is made with extra depth to allow for strict Category 6 bend radius requirements and velcro tie points have been added to allow for tidy installation practices and ease of cable routing. The module mounting holes have been placed at exact intervals to hold the module firmly in place. Cable troughs are mounted at both the top and bottom of each vertical to ensure correct cabling practices between verticals and to assist with the appearance of the overall frame. 4 \ NETWORKnews In response to growing demand for high density, high performance network cabling solutions we have developed the HIGHBAND 25 solution. PRODUCT WATCH HIGHBAND 25 SETS NEW STANDARD IN COMMUNICATIONS CABLING PATCH CORDS The innovative design of the patch cords provides for a neat and tidy solution. The cords are directed to the rear of the module and then fed into the vertical cable managers. The fully compliant Category 6 cords are available in both four pair and four pair to RJ45 configurations. Each patch cord can be individually labelled and a variety of colours are available to help identify specific services. A one pair patch cord is also available to patch voice applications or to do single pair testing. The plugs are manufactured from a durable, high impact polycarbonate material that has strength superior to other plastics - ensuring fault free connection every time. VERTICAL CABLE MANAGERS The vertical managers provide excellent cable management between frames and are available in single and dual versions. The cable managers slot directly into the mounting frame and are held firmly in place to ensure correct positioning. The single version is suitable when space is at a premium or where an additional cable manager is required beside the first or last vertical frame. The dual version is ideal for positioning between verticals. Both versions provide easy access for patch cords or hard wiring and hold the cables away from the face of the modules, improving the whole appearance of the frame. No matter how state-of-the-art your active network is, if your cabling system is of poor quality your entire network performance will be degraded. Technologies that form the backbone of today’s business communications systems such as Internet, e-mail, multimedia conferencing and e-commerce were still in their infancy just a few years ago. Your cabling system needs to be able to accommodate your current communications requirements and provide the scope to plan ahead. F eedback from those in attendance revealed that KRONE’s annual Access NET HighTIME conference is vital in understanding where the industry is heading and what new products they will be seeing in the market-place. This year’s conference held at the Novotel Glen Waverley, Melbourne on July 30th kicked off with a corporate overview from our Sales and Marketing Manager, Peter Davis. Peter Meijer, Technical Training Manager and Industry Liaison covered the latest developments in cabling standards and also talked about KRONE’s Special Applications Division, which develops custom client solutions and specialty production runs, specific to individual client needs. Following Peter, Robert Cross, National Sales Manager, Access NET discussed the effects of lightning strikes on networks. Robert physically demonstrated how KRONE arrestor magazines and maintenance-free ComProtect guard against over-voltage network spikes and power cross faults. Philip Day from Telstra’s Protection, Power & Buildings division presented an insight into the workings of the “International Telecom- munications Union” (ITU) National Study Group 5 (NSG5). Philip outlined how the ITU studies the cause and effect of various sources of overvoltage and overcurrent on telecom- munications lines and equipment. He outlined Australia’s contribution to these studies, as well as touching on the recommended methods for maximising the effects of protective apparatus. Doug Montgomery, KRONE’s Key Account Manager for Access NET markets in Victoria and Tasmania, then guided delegates through some case studies of the use of KRONE cabling by some of Australia’s and the world’s major telecommunications players. Alan Crawford, KRONE’s Product Manager, Fibre Optics, presented the applications and benefits of KRONE’s fibre, free- space optic and wireless solutions. Alan also took the opportunity to introduce the new ODS1000 from KRONE GmbH in Germany. The ODS1000 is an optical distribution system for fibre-based networks. Its extremely high-density frame and configuration flexibility ensures that this will be a popular choice for carriers and service providers that need to manage large volumes of optical fibre in limited floorspace. After closing comments, HighTIME guests took the opportunity to network amongst peers and meet new business associates. Popular political satirist Mr. Brian Dawe provided the evening’s entertainment. Access NET HighTIME is the premier event for the access market and with more than 70 industry professionals in attendance, this year’s Access NET HighTIME conference was a great success. In what appears to be difficult times for carriers, SP’s and ASP’s it was promising to see such a strong attendance. An indicator, perhaps, that this market sector is in recovery phase. ACCESSNET HIGHTIME SUCCESS A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME by Robert Cross, National Sales Manager, AccessNET, KRONE Australia AccessNET HighTIME guests 8 \ NETWORKnews Quality, flexibility and local manufacture were deciding factors for NMIT when it chose to standardise on KRONE’s PBE solution across its seven campuses. N orthern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) is a multi-campus, multi-discipline TAFE, which delivers diverse training programs to young and mature-aged students. Over 300 full- time, part-time and short courses are offered to 30,000 students across NMIT’s seven campuses located throughout the inner and northern Melbourne regions of Preston, Heidelberg, Epping, Collingwood, Greensborough, Parkville and Fairfield. Excellent resources, including state-of-the-art technology, are features of the NMIT’s high- quality training programs. NMIT has fully equipped laboratories and workshops, audiovisual equipment and studios, language laboratories and computer equipment. Aquaculture and viticulture research and development are just two of the courses NMIT offers that demand sophisticated information technology resources. In 2000 the Victorian State Government awarded NMIT a grant of $150,000 to open an aquaculture and applied research centre as part of the Epping Agricultural Campus. The centre now has 28 tanks and some 16,000 silver and jade perch. By using sophisticated computer software, students can experiment in food terms, projected rates of growth and water culture and reticulation methodology. The Australian College of Wine (ACW) is a world-class wine industry education and research facility initiated by NMIT. It provides quality training in viticulture, winemaking, wine evaluation and wine marketing. ACW has three vineyards – at Eden Park in the Plenty Valley, the Yarra Glen Racing Centre in the Yarra Valley and Aradale in Ararat. The latter was formerly an old prison and mental asylum with around 40 buildings, many of which are heritage sites. “Our network demands have escalated and it is an ongoing challenge to ensure we continue to provide the best technology assets for our teachers and students”, said Mary Waterhouse, IT Manager, NMIT. About three years ago NMIT decided to look at a standard cabling infrastructure solution across the NMIT network. Since that time they have been investigating various options such as pair managed, RJ45 and PBE solutions from KRONE as well as from other suppliers. NMIT installed KRONE’s HIGHBAND ® PBE methodology at the Greensborough campus about six years ago as the backbone for a high- density telecommunications enterprise on the back of Cisco switches and routers. It was extremely successful and gave the IT department that immeasurable luxury of more time. There are 18 staff members reporting to Mary Waterhouse in the IT team, with responsibility across all campuses. Their time is at a premium. As a result clutter is minimised, cables are efficiently tied, labelled and organised and active equipment is readily accessible. Fault finding becomes much easier to track and diagnostic research can be performed either through the online management system or offline. NMIT’s seven campuses include a range of architectural styles from contemporary office administration blocks to heritage prison and hospital buildings, farms and vineyards. As NMIT’s educational offerings continue to expand, existing campuses are relocated or refurbished and new campuses are added to the network. The challenges when networking such diverse types of premises are many and varied. NMIT are using KRONE fibre as the wide area connection to each campus from the head office administration centre at Preston. KRONE’s Premis NET ® PBE solution will be progressively installed at each campus under the premium KRONE 20-year parts and labour warranty. Most of the metropolitan cabling work will be done by KRONE endorsed installer, Newscom. NMIT also had no problem finding a KRONE endorsed installer in the country. Rural Phones and Data will be under-take all the work at the Australian College of Wine campus at its historic Aradale Vineyard at Ararat, 200kms north west of Melbourne. PBE has worked well for NMIT at the Greensborough campus and it’s gratifying for us to see PBE applied across the seven NMIT campuses. It’s also rewarding to know that our own Australian-designed and manufactured HIGHBAND technology is at the core of PBE technology. The fact that KRONE HIGHBAND was developed and manufactured in Australia was a major factor in the purchasing decision for NMIT. Supplier specifications state that NMIT must buy Australian product wherever possible. NMIT have been able to abide by the Australian made rule while, at the same time, getting the best and most flexible solution for their current and future needs. Q NETWORKnews \ 9 KRONE ACROSS SEVEN CAMPUSES Students picking grapes at the ACW vineyard, Eden Park Stables at the NMIT Eden Park campus. 10 \ NETWORKnews T he cable manager is used to form and hold the wires on the KM8 jack as the conductors are terminated onto the jacks silver plated KRONE LSA-PLUS ® 45-degree contacts. In addition, the cable manager supports the wires and prevents disturbances after termination. This is all done on the KM8 jack without using the familiar KRONE tool. This departure from the previous method of termination results from the recent release of the Category 6 performance level for structured cabling components. Category 6 sets a performance specification for transmission over twisted pair cabling at an upper frequency of 250 MHz, this is two-and-a-half times that of the well known Category 5e standard. Category 6 more than doubles the bandwidth of Category 5e, vastly improves signal-to-noise margins and has much better isolation from external noise, allowing improved transmission performance. While cables have a very consistent geometry throughout their length, it’s when the signal transitions from a cable to a connector that a potential for discontinuity exists. When frequencies of up to 250 MHz are transmitted there is a quite different set of considerations in cable and connection behaviour. IDC modular jacks have to be user friendly in the field, allowing the installer to easily form and terminate the eight (8) wires. At the same time, the required transmission characteristics at Category 6 performance have to be taken into account. At these frequencies uncontrolled bending of the wires and variation in the distance between wires will have considerable effects on performance. The KM8’s unique cable manager provides better control over the placement of the wire pairs and automatically resolves the important issue of keeping the unsheathed wire pairs as short as possible up to the 45-degree IDC terminals. In some circumstances, for example, when terminating and fixing a modular jack on wall outlets, the wires are terminated in the front of the mounting position and the jack is turned around and pushed back into the housing with the cable ending up in an uncontrolled and unknown position. This is not such an electrical problem on Category 5e, but without the benefit of a Cable manager at Category 6 frequencies there could be dire consequences for the transmission performance of the circuit. Conventional plastic cable ties must not be used with Category 6 cable. With undisturbed geometry, KRONE Category 6 cable has impedance of 100 Ohms and a constant NEXT. The transmission characteristics of the cable will be disturbed if:  The sheath is removed  The sheath and the pair separator are removed  The sheath and the pair separator are removed and the wires are untwisted.  The geometry of the wire pairs relative to each other is changed. This disturbance of the geometry has an adverse impact on the transmission characteristics, especially on NEXT and return loss. The affect becomes greater with increasing length of the disturbed region. The task of the cable manager is to minimise these disturbing influences, this is how it works: NEXT: By separation of the different wire pairs and a defined guidance of the wire pairs there will be no deterioration of the NEXT.
