Trường THCS Phạm Ngọc Thạch Chuyên đề Reported Speech Chuyên đề: REPORTED SPEECH A/ Đặt vấn đề: Trong khi, nói đơi khơng nói lại ngun văn lời nói mà dùng ngơn ngữ riêng để tường thuật lại lời đảm bảo nội dung cần truyền đạt Người ta gọi câu Tường thuật gián tiếp Ở chương trình tiếng Anh lớp lớp 9, em học điểm ngữ pháp Trong kỳ thi, điểm ngữ pháp thường xuyên xuất Và chúng tơi nhận thấy chuyên đề ngữ pháp quan trọng xuyên suốt trình học em Đặc biệt chương trình tiếng anh lớp lớp 9, lớp THPT đại học Tuy nhiên, nhận thấy rằng, đa số em học sinh q trình học thường gặp khó khăn để nắm vững điểm ngữ pháp Một số em cách làm để làm dạng tập Chính vậy, phân cơng cho phép, chúng tơi thực chun đề nhằm tìm phương pháp dạy, giúp em học sinh nắm vững làm dạng tập câu Reported speech có hiệu Trong q trình báo cáo chuyên đề này, hi vọng đồng nghiệp góp ý bổ sung cịn thiếu sót để chuyên đề có hiệu B/ Giải vấn đề: I Định nghĩa: Direct speech also known as Quoted speech (Lời dẫn trực tiếp –) Khi ta nói lại, tường thuật lại lời người khác cách nguyên vẹn, không thêm bớt gọi lời dẫn trực tiếp Lời dẫn trực tiếp đặt dấu ngoặc kép Examples:  Nam said, “I am good at English.”  “I like reading books,” she said Reported speech also known as Indirect speech (Lời dẫn gián tiếp) Người Viết: Lê Thị Quế Anh Trường THCS Phạm Ngọc Thạch Chuyên đề Reported Speech Khi ta nói lại, tường thuật lại lời người khác không thiết phải chữ, lời mà có thay đổi đảm bảo nội dung lời nói người gọi lời dẫn gián tiếp Lời dẫn gián tiếp không đặt trong dấu ngoặc kép  Examples:  Nam said (that) he was good at English  She said (that) she liked reading books II Những thay đổi chuyển từ lời trực tiếp sang gián tiếp: Thay đổi động từ tình thái: (tenses and modal verbs) Direct speech Present simple - He said, “I have breakfast at o’clock.” Present continuous - He said, “I am having breakfast” Present perfect - He said, “I have had breakfast” Present perfect continuous - She said, “I’ve teaching English for seven years.” Past continuous - She said, “I was teaching earlier.” Reported speech Past simple - He said he had breakfast at o’clock Past continuous - He said he was having breakfast Past perfect - He said he had had breakfast Past perfect continuous -She said she had been teaching English for seven years Past pefrfect continuous/ past continuous -She said she was/ had been teaching earlier Simple past Past perfect - He said, “I had breakfast two hours - He said he had had breakfast two hours ago.” before Will Would - She said, “I’ll teach English online - She said she would teach English online tomorrow.” the following day Can Could - She said, “She can teach English - She said she could teach English online online.” May Might - She said, “May I open a new - She asked if she might open a new browser?” browser Had to Had had to - He said, 'After the lecture I had to - He said that after the lecture he had had rush home.' to rush home * Những trường hợp cần lưu ý:  Shall  Would (future) Ex: “I shall tell him exactly what I think,” she said Người Viết: Lê Thị Quế Anh Trường THCS Phạm Ngọc Thạch     Chuyên đề Reported Speech She said she would tell him exactly what she thought Shall  Should (offers, suggestions, requests for advice) Ex: “Shall I speak to him in person?” she asked She asked whether she should speak to him in person May  Might (possibility) Ex: “I may finish my work before a.m,” he said He said he might finish his work before a.m May  Could (permission) Ex: “May I use your computer?” he said to me He asked me if he could use my computer Must  Must (commands, prohibitions, deduction or advice) Ex: His father said, “Tom must work harder next term.” His father said that Tom must work harder the following term Thay đổi từ thời gian, nơi chốn: (Changes in time and place words/ Now and here Words.) before The following week/ the next week/ the week after/ a week later The previous week/ the week before The previous night/ the night before There * Lưu ý:  Ngồi thay đổi thì, trạng từ thời gian thành that  Examples:  He said, “I am going shopping this morning.” (direct speech)  He said that he was going shopping that morning (reported speech)  This, That (determiner) trước từ người vật đổi thành The  Example:  Mai said, “I like this book.” (direct speech)  Mai said that she liked the book (reported speech)  This, That đại từ đổi thành it  Example:  Mai said, “I like this.” (direct speech)  Mai said that she liked it (reported speech)  III/ Những trường hợp không thay đổi (Cases remaining unchanged) Một số khơng thay đổi chuyển sang câu tường thuật gián tiếp Past perfect She said, “The lesson had already started when he arrived.” Past perfect continuous She said, “I’d already been teaching for five minutes.” Conditional statements  Type 2: “If you passed your test, I would buy you a car,” he said  Type 3: “If you’d passed your test, I would have bought you a car.” Past perfect (NO CHANGE) She said the lesson had already started when he arrived Past perfect continuous (NO CHANGE) She said she had already been teaching for five minutes NO CHANGE IN TENSES  Type 2: He said that if I passed my test, he would buy me a car  Type 3: He told me that if I’d passed my test, he would have bought me a car Nếu động từ tường thuật (reporting verb) đơn, hồn thành tương lai đơn giữ nguyên động từ lời dẫn gián tiếp Examples:  She says, “I wash my hair every day.”  She says she washes her hair every day  She has said, “I wash my hair every day.”  She has said that she washes her hair every day  She will say, “I wash my hair every day.”  She thuật thường giữ nguyên (no change) Examples:  A: What did the conductor say?  B: He said that the next stop is Northgate Nếu động từ will động từ khiếm khuyết câu tường thuật diễn đạt nghĩa tương lai tình mơ tả câu trích dẫn ln thời điểm tường thuật will khơng đổi thành would cho dù động từ tường thuật khứ Example: Mr Arden said that a volcanic eruption will occur next year Trong mệnh đề thời gian khứ, ta không thực bước lùi Example: “When he arrived, I had left the room,” said Hoa Hoa said that she had left the room when he arrived Thì khứ tiếp diễn theo lý thuyết phải chuyển thành q khứ hồn thành tiếp diễn, thực tế giữ ngun ngoại trừ đề cập đến hành động hoàn thành EX: + He said, “When I saw them, they were playing tennis.”  He said that when he saw them, they were playing tennis + She said, “We were thinking of selling the house but we have decided not to”  She said that they had been thinking of selling the house but they had decided not to Chúng ta khơng thay đổi q khứ đơn dùng để mơ tả tình trạng khơng thay đổi việc mà tồn lời nói tường thuật EX: + She said, “I decided not to buy the house because it was on a main road.”  She said that she had decided not to buy the house because it was on a main road Chúng ta khơng thay đổi mệnh đề câu ước Ex: + “I wish I lived in Nha Trang.”  He said he wished he lived in Nha trang + “I wish my children would eat vegetables,” she said  She (said she) wished her children would eat vegetables Khi tường thuật lại thật, chân lý ta thường giữ ngun mệnh đề Examples: + She said, “The moon causes the tides.” Người Viết: Lê Thị đơi dùng khứ trường hợp + He said, “The Sun rises in the East.”  He said that the Sun rose in the East * Các động từ tình thái sau khơng thay đổi: Must Should Ought to Would Would rather Would sooner Could Used to Had better Might Needn’t have            Must (hoặc had to) Should Ought to Would Would rather Would sooner Could Used to Had better Might Needn’t have IV Các loại câu tường thuật: Tường thuật lại lời trực tiếp xác định phủ định: (Statements) a Công thức chung: said S + said to +O + (that) + S + V (lùi thì) told (O) Ví dụ: (Language focus 3/ p.39 – English 9)  Aunt Xuan said, “I am happy to see you.” (direct speech)  Aunt Xuan said (that) she was happy to see you (reported speech)  Mr Quang said to me, “I don’t love these roses.” (direct speech)  Mr Quang said to me (that) he didn’t love the roses (reported speech) Hoặc:  Mr Quang told me (that) he didn’t love the roses (reported speech) c Các bước làm:  Dùng động từ said (that) để tường thuật Nếu có đối biệu câu hỏi YES/NO: Câu hỏi Yes/No thường bắt đầu trợ động từ như: Do, Does, Did, Can, Could, Is, Am, Are, Will, Has, Have, Was, Were Ex:  “Do you know his name?”, she said  “Does your mother work in a factory?” I asked him  “Did you finish your work?” he said  “Can you swim?” she said  “Could you swim when you were a child?” I said to him  “Will you go to Dalat next week?” she said  “Are you use a computer?” (direct speech)  She asked me if/ whether I could use a computer (reported speech)  “Is your school near here, Hoa?” said Nga (direct speech)  Nga asked Hoa if/ whether her school was near here (reported speech) * Chú ý: o Các câu hỏi đuôi tường thuật giống câu hỏi Yes/ No  “You don’t play chess, you?” he asked me  “You play chess, don’t you?” he asked me  “You don’t play chess, you?” he asked me (direct speech)  He asked me if/ whether I played chess (reported speech) o Những câu hỏi Yes/ No có thêm OR NOT cuối câu thường tường thuật là:  “Do you want any dinner or not?”  He wanted to know if/ whether we wanted any dinner or not  He wanted to know whether or not we wanted dinner (Ở trường hợp thứ này, t không dùng IF OR NOT để tường thuật.) d Các bước thực hiện:  Dùng động từ asked (sb) để tường thuật  Mở đầu nội dung tường thuật If Whether  Đảo trợ động từ sau chủ ngữ Nếu trợ động từ do, does did ta bỏ phải nhớ lùi cho động từ cuối câu khơng dùng dấu hỏi  Thực thay đổi có liên quan (đại từ, trạng từ, …) e Bài tập: Exercise 2: Put the following sentences into indirect speech 'Do puppies travel free?' asked a dog owner 'Can I bring I said to her 10 'Were your own boys happy at the school?' she said  Wh-questions: Người Viết: Lê Thị Quế Anh Trường THCS Phạm Ngọc Thạch Chuyên đề Reported Speech a Công thức chung: S + ASKED + (O) + W/h – Question word + S + V (lùi thì) b Một số hình thức biểu câu hỏi W/H: Câu hỏi W/h thường bắt đầu từ như: what, why, when, who, which, where, whose, how (much/many/often/old…) Ex:  “What are you doing now?”  “Why you learn English?”  “When did you come back home?”  “Which one you like best?”  “Where you live?”  “How old are you?”  “How many children you have?”  … c Ví dụ:  He said, “What is it?” (direct speech)  He asked what it was (reported speech)  She said to me, “ What is the name of your school?” (direct speech)  She asked me what the name of my school was (reported speech)  “How you go to school, Lan?” said the teacher (direct speech)  The teacher asked Lan how she went to school (reported speech) d Các bước thực  Dùng động từ asked (sb) để tường thuật  Mở đầu nội dung tường thuật nghi vấn từ câu hỏi trực tiếp  Đảo trợ động từ sau chủ ngữ Nếu trợ động từ do, does, did ta bỏ phải lùi cho động từ cuối câu khơng dùng dấu hỏi  Thực thay đổi có liên quan e Notes:  Ngoài động từ asked (sb), ta dùng số động từ khác để tường thuật như: wondered, wanted to know, required, …  Trường hợp câu trực tiếp có statement question đổi sang câu gián tiếp, phần đổi theo phần ấy, vế câu có liên từ and, because, although…  Example:  “I have left my watch at home Can you tell me the time?”, said he  He said that he had left his watch at home and asked me if I could tell him the time + “I can’t the test It is too hard,” said Nam  Nam said that he couldn’t the test because it was too hard Người Viết: Lê Thị Quế Anh Trường THCS Phạm Ngọc Thạch Chuyên đề Reported Speech - Nếu nghi vấn từ lời dẫn trực tiếp cụm từ làm chức chủ ngữ đổi sang lời dẫn gián tiếp ta không thực bước đảo vị trí từ  Example: + He said, “What is happening?” He asked what was happening f Bài tập: Exercise 3: Put the following sentences into indirect speech The first ten questions require no change of order: “What happened to Mr Budd?” said one of the men “Which of his sons inherited his estate?” asked another “Who is going to live in the big house?” enquired a third “What will happen to his racehorses?” asked someone else “Which team has won?” asked Ann “Which team won the previous match?” said Bill “Who is playing next week?” he asked “Who will be umpiring that match?” asked Tom “Who wants a lift home?” said Ann 10 “Who has just dropped a Ј10 note?” I asked 11 “Where is the ticket office?” asked Mrs Jones 12 “What shall I with my heavy luggage?” she said (Use should.) 13 “What platform does the train leave from?” asked Bill 14 “When does it arrive in York?” he asked 15 “When was the timetable changed?” I asked 16 “Why has the 2.30 train been cancelled?” said Ann 17 “How much does a day return to Bath cost?” Mrs Jones asked 18 “Why does the price go up so often?” she wondered 19 “How can I get from the station to the airport?” said Bill 20 “When are you coming back?” I asked them Tường thuật lại câu cầu khiến (indirect commands, requests) Công thức chung: S + asked/ told + O + to/ not to – infinitive b Các hình thức biểu câu cầu khiến: - “Can you wait a moment, please?” he said - “Could you tell me the way to the post office?” She said - “Will you help me with my homework?” said Peter - “Woud you like to join our Drama Group?” she said - “Please turn on the lights?” said Lan - “Would you mind cleaning the blackboard?” he said - “I wonder if you can type this letter for me?” she said - “Do you think you could help me?” she said a Lưu ý: Can you this for me? told me to open the window (reported speech)  The teacher said to students, “Close your books, please.” (direct speech)  The teacher asked/ told students to close their books (reported speech)  “Don’t stay up late, Nam” said Hoa (direct speech)  Hoa asked/ told Nam not to stay up late (reported speech) d Các bước thực hiện:  Dùng động từ asked/ told (sb) để tường thuật  Đưa động từ câu trực tiếp hình thức “to-inf” u cầu mang nghĩa khẳng định “not to-inf” yêu cầu mang nghĩa phủ định  Nếu câu yêu cầu/ đề nghị trực tiếp có chữ “Please” ta bỏ  Thực thay đổi có liên quan Một số trường hợp đặc biệt: (special cases) Reported commands, requests, advice, suggestion, offers expressed by an infinitive:  Verb + object + infinitive: advise, encourage, invite, remind, warn, tell, ask, order, beg (…) Ex:  Khuyên làm gì/ khơng làm gì: + “I think you should see a dentist.”  He advised her to see a dentist + “If I were you, I wouldn’t buy that second hand laptop.”  He advised me not to buy that second-hand laptop  Bảo làm chuyện gì: + “Please type this letter for me.” The director said to his secretary  The director asked his secretary to type the letter for him  Ra lệnh cho làm + “Lie down on the floor.” The robbers said to everybody at the bank  The robber ordered everybody at the bank to lie down on the floor  Mời làm + “Would you like to go to the café with me?” change into reported speech “Come to the cinema with me,” he asked her “Make a list of what you want,” she told us “Don't put your hands near the bars,” the zoo keeper warned us “Would you like to attend the presentation?” they said to all their friends “You ought to enter the competition You’ll certainly win,” he encouraged me “Remember to book the tickets for the theatre,” she reminded him “Would you mind not smoking between courses?” said their hostess “Will you help me, please?” she said “Could you check the oil, please?” I asked the mechanic  Verb + to-infinitive: agree, decide, offer, promise, refuse, threaten… Examples:  Từ chối làm điều + She said, “No, I won’t lend you my bicycle.”  She refused to lend me her bicycle  Đe dọa điều + The robber said, “If you inform the speech with a verb followed by That + Clause: admit, agree, decide, deny, explain, insist, promise, recommend, suggest, boast, claim, complain, demand, ect Examples:  Biểu đạt khoe khoang, niềm tự hào: + “I’m the most successful businessman in the country.”  He boasted that he was the most successful businessman in the country  Biểu đạt tự khai, tự cho là: + “I know his address” said she  She claimed that she knew his address  Biểu đạt phàn nàn + “The room is in the mess”  She complained that the room was in the mess  Biểu đạt mệnh lệnh, yêu cầu: + “Open the safe immediately.” Said the robber  The robber demanded that she should open the safe immediately  Biểu đạt thông báo + “The examination will be held on Tuesday.”  He informed me that the examination would be held on deny, recommend, suggest, advise, regret, Examples:  Biểu đạt lời thú nhận + “Yes, you are right I broke the vase while cleaning the table.” said she  She admitted breaking the vase (Hoặc: She admitted having broken…)  Biểu đạt phủ nhận + “No, of course not I didn’t damage your computer,” said Peter  Peter denied damaging my computer (Hoặc: Peter denied having damaged my computer.)  Biểu năn: + “If only I had told him the truth.” Jane regrets not telling him the truth  Verb + object – preposition – gerund: accuse, blame, congratulate, criticize, thank, etc Examples:  Biểu đạt lời buộc tội accuse sb of + He said, “You destroyed the computer.”  He accused me of destroying the computer  Biểu đạt ngăn cấm prevent sb from + “No, no Sit down and don’t go out of the class.” said the teacher  The teacher prevented us from going out of the class  Biểu đạt lời chúc mừng congratulate sb on + “You’ve won the first prize Congratulations, Hoa” said the teacher  The teacher congratulated Hoa on winning the first prize  Khiển trách, đổ lỗi cho việc gì: blame sb for + “You have just broken my beautiful glasses, Tom.” Peter said  Peter blamed Tom for breaking his beautiful glasses  Xin lỗi điều apologize to sb for + She said, “I am very sorry I’m so rude to you, Nam.”  She apologized to Nam for being so rude to him  Khen ngợi, ca tụng compliment sb on/ for + “Oh!
