IOBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to write a personal letter with an outline  a letter about a visit to a place

Warm up: Brainstorm (two forms of verbs)

- Teacher gives some questions and asks Ss to answer them + Have you ever visited any other places in Vietnam? + When did you go?

+ How did you get there?

+ Did you visit any places of interest?

+ When you are away from home, you keep in touch? How? * Pre:

- Ask Ss to imagine you are visiting your relatives or friends in another part of Vietnam or in a different country

1- Where are you now? How did you get there? 2- Who did you meet?

- Teacher asks or Ss to tell the class about their visit

A/ Eliciting the form of a personal letter, based on the ordering:

- Remind Ss about the format of a personal letter by asking the questions: What are the parts of a personal letter?

1 Heading: Writer’s address Date

2 Opening: Dear, …. 3 Body of the letter:

(1st paragraph): Talk about where you are staying… (2nd paragraph): Talk about: what you’ve done

who you’ve met (etc)

(3rd paragraph): Talk about how you feel… 4 Closing: Love,

B/ Set the scene: Now, imagine you’re visiting one of your relatives or friends in another part

of Vietnam Write a letter to your family using the outline on page 11 - Have students read the outline (p.11) carefully

A- Heading: - Writer’s address and the date B- Opening: - Dear

C- Body of the letter:

D- Closing: - Your friend /regard (q/mến, k /trọng) / love.

** While:

- Ask Ss to write a letter to their family, telling them about their visit - Suggested ideas:

First paragraph:

I arrived at Da Nang airport / train station / bus station at pm / 8am / late in the afernoon / at midnight, ete On Tuesday / Wednesday / Saturday

Nam/ Huong/ Uncle Yan/ Aunt Hau met me at the airport/ train station/ bus station, then he/ she took me home by taxi/ motorbike/ bicycle

Second paragraph:

I’ve visited/ (been) to many places like the beaches, the Cham Museum, Marble Mountains, supermarkets, the water park, etc

I’ve tried different foods: seafood, Da Nang specialties I’ll visit Hoi An and My Son tomorrow/ on Sunday

Third paragraph:

I feel so happy and enjoy myself so much The people here are so nice and friendly, the foods are so delicious, and the sights are so beautiful

Dear ,

I arrived at Phu Bai Airport at about pm on Thursday Uncle Hung and Loan, my cousins, met me at the airport and took me home by their car.

You know, I’ve visited many places in Hue such as Thien Mu Pagoda, Ngo Mon Gate, Huong River, Dong Ba Market… I’ve bought a lot of souvenirs such as clothes, hats, for my family I’ve tried different foods in Hue such as cakes and porridge are very delicious, but the soup is very hot Tomorrow, I will go to visit Tombs in Hue.

I feel very happy and enjoy myself so much (here) The people here are very friendly, and the sights are so beautiful.

I will leave Hue at a.m next Saturday and will arrive home at about p.m Please pick me up at Ca Mau bus station.

A/ Activity 01:

- Teacher guides Ss give the structure “past simple”

+ Formation:

+ Use:

1- Thì khứ đơn để diễn tả hành động hồn thành q khứ khơng cịn liên quan đến Các trạng từ thường kèm thuộc khứ như: yesterday, last Sunday, last week / month / year, ago, time + ago ( days ago)

Ex: Yesterday I went to the market and bought some books.

2- Thì khứ đơn để diễn tả thói quen khứ tình trạng khứ Trong trường hợp thường có trạng từ thời gian kèm

Ex: a) I always got up late in the morning when I was young ( thói quen) b) I lived in that village for a long time (chỉ tình trạng)

3- Một chuỗi hành động khứ, xảy sau

Ex: At that time, he got out of his car, locked the windows, came to the gate of his vila,

4- Một hành động xảy đồng thời với (hoặc sau) hành động khác khứ Ex: a) He met his friend while he was driving home

b) He met his friend after he had posted the letter Meaning:

Use: Express actions happened in the past at a definite time(yesterday, last , ago) - Have students practice asking and answering the questions:

- Get students to ask and answer questions about what each person did on the weekend (Use the table on page 11)

- Some pairs of good students model the example conversation - Closed pair practice with the cues from the table (P.11)

- Open pair practice (teacher asks any two other students to demonstrate any conversation) Eg1:

Hoa: What did Nga on the weekend?

B/ Activity 02:

* Production :

Chain game (using the simple past tense): two tables, one group Eg:

A: Yesterday, I got up early

B: Yesterday, I got up early and had a big breakfast

C: Yesterday, I got up early, had a big breakfast and said goodbye to my parents (etc) - Teacher gives the picture which they did to prepare for the party And asks Ss to practice a farewall party for Maryam (practice in pairs and then in groups)

* Set the scene: Lan and her friends are holding a farewell party for Maryam Write things they did to prepare for the party using the picture and phrasal verbs above

- Divide the class into groups Tell them to name the people in the picture and to go to the board, write as quickly as they could

* The past simple with “wish”:

- Set the scene: Tom is short, he wants to be taller What will he say? → I wish I were taller

Meaning: Ước gì, mong ước Use: Diễn tả điều trái ngược với thực tế

Concept check: + What tense is used for “wish”? + What comes after “wish”?

+ What tense is used in the clause after “wish”?

- Have students work with a partner, make wishes for the situations at page 12 - Give feedback and correct:

- Teacher elicits the lesson and asks Ss to give the sentence structures with “Wish” and “If only” (giá mà, ước gì)

* For present actions:

S1 + wish + S2 V(ed / II) + O ……

If only + S + unreal past Be -> were ….

Can -> Could + V …… (Be-> Were sử dụng cho tất ngôi.)

Ex:

a- I can’t speak English -> I wish I could speak English./ (If only I could speak English.) b- Mai doesn’t understand the Grammar lesson

-> She wishes she understood the Grammar lesson / (If only she understood the Grammar lesson.)

Ex:

a- We are going to a text tomorrow -> We weren’t going to a text tomorrow -> (-> If only we weren’t going to a text tomorrow.)

b- Hong won’t come with us on the trip to the countryside

-> We wish she would come with us on the trip to the countryside -> (If only she would come with us on the trip to the countryside.)

* For past actions:

S1 + wish + S2

If only + S + could have + p.phad p.p

Ex:

a- Hoa didn’t go to Maryam’s birthday party last night

-> Hoa wished he had gone to Maryam’s birthday party night -> (If only he had gone there.)

b- I couldn’t come to the meeting last time

-> I wish I could have come to the meeting last time -> (If only I could have come to the meeting last time.)

- Ask students to complete the exercises and then write them on the board - Give the example:

a) You are not very tall -> I wish I were taller - Call each student make the lesson on the board

b- I wish I were in the swimming pool. c- I wish I had a computer.

d- I wish I lived near my school. e- I wish I had a sister.

f- I wish I drew well.

g- I wish I had my friend’s phone number. h- I wish I knew many friends.

i- I wish I there were rivers and lakes in my hometown. (I wish my hometown had some rivers and lakes.)

4 – Consolidation:

- Teacher gives some exercises and guides Ss to complete them * Write the sentences with “wish”…

1- I don’t know many people (and I’m lonely) -> I wish I knew more people.

2- I can’t give up smoking (but I’d like to) -> I wish I could give up smoking.

3- It’s hot (and I hate hot weather).-> I wish it weren’t so hot. 5 – Homework:

- Learning the lesson by heart - Doing the homework
