Today, one of the keys to CUNY’s success is the strategic utilization of networking technology. From on-line classes to the Web library, embracing new technology is crucial to CUNY’s success. City University of New York Providing Access to Academic Excellence As a public institution of higher learning, the City University of New York’s mandate is to offer a powerful academic program at affordable costs. CUNY’s roots date back to 1847, with the founding of the Free Academy by Townsend Harris. The mission of that institution, as he put it, was to “Open the doors to all—let the children of the rich and poor take seats together and know of no distinction save that of industry, good conduct and intellect.” Then, as today, its mission was to “educate the whole people”—to uphold a commitment to academic 2 FROM A COLLEGE ON MANHATTAN’S POSH PARK AVENUE TO A SPRAWLING BEACHFRONT CAMPUS IN BROOKLYN, CUNY OFFERS STUDENTS A RICH, DIVERSE ARRAY OF MORE THAN 900 PROGRAMS. 3 excellence while providing equal access to, and opportunity for, education. Yongsoo Ha, Director of Academic Computing and Law School Systems, wanted to make sure the latest CUNY data cabling installation would support the University’s future needs. The City University of New York CUNY is the largest urban university and the third largest public university system in the United States. With more than 200,000 students in nearly 300 degree programs on its 20 campuses (and more than 150,000 students in adult and continuing education programs), CUNY offers a vast array of educational opportunities to diverse populations. CUNY campuses serve as indispensable cultural, social and educational resources to the surrounding communities. Alumni—from Gen. Colin Powell and comedian Jerry Seinfeld to novelist Oscar Hijuelos, Nobel Laureate Rosalyn Yalow and 10 other Nobel Laureates—excel in every field of human endeavor. Additionally, more American chief executive officers have graduated from CUNY than any other baccalaureate-granting institution. Its extraordinary faculty features world-renowned scholars teaching 4 THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK NOW BOASTS 10 SENIOR COLLEGES, SIX COMMUNITY COLLEGES, A DOCTORAL-GRANTING GRADUATE SCHOOL, A LAW SCHOOL, AN ACCELERATED MEDICAL PROGRAM AND A MEDICAL SCHOOL. 5 courses on all levels, from introductory undergraduate classes to small graduate seminars in CUNY’s nationally-ranked doctoral programs. Tools for Education The computer age and the Internet have radically changed the college experience in the past few years. Virtual classrooms (including on-line registration, lebrary access and report cards), quizzes over the Internet and networked dormitory rooms are just a few examples of how colleges and universities have leveraged technology to both enhance the learning experience and create efficient academic administration. To provide such services, CUNY needed to ensure that the infrastructure would be able to support such diverse and demanding applications. Yongsoo Ha knew that their infrastructure would need to be improved. “We were beginning to call upon our network to do more and more, yet we had not updated the cabling system in almost 10 years. Response time was slow and users had to wait much longer than they should have—primarily due to an inadequate cabling system.” 6 “EDUCATING STUDENTS TODAY INCREASINGLY INVOLVES COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY. THE CABLING SYSTEM WILL DETERMINE WHETHER WE CAN LEVERAGE OUR NETWORKS TO PROVIDE A QUALITY EDUCATION.” YONGSOO HA, CUNY 7 Rapid Advancement More users, new applications, faster Internet connections and efficient and reliable data transfer were prime considerations in choosing products to build CUNY’s School of Law’s new network. “Starting with a good foundation made perfect sense to me. We wanted to install a system that supported both current and future applications…one we could put in the wall and forget about,” stated Bill Darios, Network Administrator. CUNY’s School of Law looked at several system offerings available on the market and chose the TrueNet solution from KRONE. Opting for KRONE’s C6T solution, which is an Anixter Levels XP 7 compliant solution, CUNY’s School of Law was impressed by the performance capabilities of the KRONE products—both in electrical performance and data carrying capacity. According to Yongsoo Ha, “We wanted a system that was perfect from one end to the other. KRONE’s C6T, we felt, was as good as they came.
