20 PART I: OPENING I REASONS FOR CHOOSING THE THEME Vocabulary plays an indispensable role in every language It is vocabulay that helps speakers and writers convey almost everything they would like to express The more vocabulary you master, the more effectively you express your thoughts and feelings To students, beside the effectiveness of communication, gaining a wide variety of vocabulary, specially synonyms and antonyms supports students a lot in reading comprehension and answering the questions relating to closest and opposite meaning According to the rate in the matrix of English test in the GCSE in recent years, the percentage of questions relating to vocabulary accounts for almost 30 percent Therefore, the more words and expressions students know, the better their answers to vocabulary questions are In my teaching periods, I have paid special attention to presenting synonyms and antonyms with the hope that students can enrich their vocabulary as much as possible Until now, my efforts have brought some positive results First, students take more notice of synonyms and antonyms in each lesson They try to find out words or phrases which have similar or opposite meaning to the words they have just learnt Second, students’ vocabulary is getting better and better Third, students give better answers to questions relating to closest and opposite meaning in the tests they have done recently With my experience in teaching English at Hoang Hoa High School, I have researched reference documents, learned from co-workers as well as applied many different teaching methods I have gained some first positive results However, due to the limitation of the thesis, I just present my initiative applied in Unit 1: HOME LIFE – Basic English 12 I would like to choose the theme “Integrating teaching synonyms and antonyms in Unit – “Home life” of basic English 12 and designing some synonym and antonym excercises” II STUDY PURPOSES - Analysing real situations of teaching vocabulary - Presenting some experience in integrating teaching synomyms and antonyms in Unit “Home Life”– Basic English 12 to raise general learning effects - Designing some exercises that help students revise and remember vocabulary as easily and quickly as possible - Helping students give better answers to questions relating vocabulary especially the ones about synomyms and antonyms in study tasks III STUDY OBJECTS - Real situations of teaching and learning vocabulary at Hoang Hoa High School - Unit 1- “Home life” in basic English 12 IV STUDY METHODS Exploiting the basic English textbook 12 – Unit 1: “Home life” and reference documents Exploiting teaching aids Exploiting students’ synthetic ability Working positively individually and in small groups V SOME INNOVATIONS OF THE THEME - Helping enrich students’ vocabulary about the topic “Home life” - Emphasizing antonyms and synonyms of words students have learnt - Providing students with chances to recall their vocabulary to relating exercises after the lesson - Bettering students’ effectiveness in learning vocabulary and applying words/phrases they have learnt to required tasks PART II: STUDY CONTENTS CHAPTER I: ARGUMENT GROUNDS Theoritical grounds Just when students start learning English, they get accustomed to four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing It is through these four skills that teachers pass knowledge to students and students gain their knowledge In order to improve these four skills, students need enrich their vocabulary particularly through lessons It requires that teachers not only understand well effective teaching methods but also apply smoothly the principle “Learning parallels hands-on” [4] Starting from the view of “Learners are the centre”, teaching and learning methods have changed greatly Teachers are not those who hold knowledge and pass it to students, but those who guide, support, consult and check students’ working Students not absorb knowledge passively Becoming the centre of the teaching-learning process, students are completely active and creative in study to achieve good learning results and know how to apply knowledge in real life as well as doing tasks required in tests and exams [3] From the grounds above, how to apply innovative methods of teaching vocabulary in general and synonyms and antonyms about the topic “HOME LIFE” in particular is very important It helps students improve their basic language skills and better exercises which focus on vocabulary meaning This meets some real demands of learning a language Practical grounds All high schools have used English teaching and learning materials, which ask students to develop equally all four skills, which cannot ignore the integral roles of vocabulary Mastering a wide range of words and phrases, students will feel easier and more confident in choosing suitable words to express their ideas more effectively Furthermore, in terms of lexical meaning, students will reinforce the use of words so that they can comprehense better the reading texts and improve their correctness in choosing options when answering questions relating to vocabulary as well as synonyms and antonyms In order to raise students’ vocabulary, both teachers and students need to make efforts in each lesson For teachers, they had better study each lesson carefully, choose suitable teaching methods to students’ levels, design proper teaching steps and use teaching aids to achieve the aims Besides, teachers should also ask students to participate actively in each study activity in order to recall the words and phrases they have known as well as absorb new ones, copy them carefully, try to learn by heart as many as possible and specially try to use them frequently to remember At Hoang Hoa high school, students’ vocabulary is really limited Therefore, they have difficulty in understanding passages and express their thoughts in English Trying to enrich students’ vocabulary is a necessary step to improve four skills in learning English generally and doing exercises relating to lexical meaning particularly When experimenting in some classes of grade 12 at my school, I have gained some encouraging results My periods of teaching become more interesting with students’ participation before after each lesson, which makes students more active and betters their vocabulary Little by little, their English knowledge is improved and their answers to questions relating to vocabulary are more and more correct With some experience of helping students better their vocabulary applied to Unit – HOME LIFE through the techniques of integrating teaching synonyms and antonyms, I have realized that students’ vocabulary is better after the lesson CHAPTER II: REAL SITUATIONS Students Generally, the level of students’ knowledge is quite low due to the difficult economic conditions in the poor countryside and little contact with situations in which they use English Besides, the English knowledge of students is not equal in the same class and among classes in the same grade Moreover, the number of students in a class is quite high (about 40-45 students) These result in difficulties when teachers decide to choose methods as well as control class activities during lessons Generally, students’ vocabulary is quite limited, which affects negatively their results when they tasks requiring a variety of word uses Teachers After testing some teaching methods, teachers often feel discouraged because students not participate in activities actively Thus, the practical results are not as good as expected ones Gradually, teachers seem not to pay serious attention to promoting students to learn synonyms and antonyms in order to enrich their vocabulary little by little They often teach each lesson separately with a view to completing required tasks without widening vocabulary especially synonyms and antonyms Material facilities Due to the lack of essential material facilities especially reference documents such as English story books, novels, magazines, newspapers, Thus, students’ vocabulary is mainly gained from lessons in class and textbooks However, the amount of vocabulary in textbooks is quite limited, and the number of synonyms and antonyms in textbooks is not large enough to help students meet the requirements of tasks focusing on vocabulary With these limitations, the results of students’ tasks relating vocabulary seem difficult to be improved It is like a challenge which has no exit for quite a long time Survey results before integrating teaching synonyms and antonyms (Average percentage on completing tasks which focus on vocabulary) Class 12A1 12A6 Student number 38 45 Levels of task completion Under 50% 50% - 80% Over 80% 20 52,6% 14 36,9% 10,5% 23 51,1% 18 40,0% 8,9% Class 12A1 is chosen to become the experimental class and 12A6 is the control class in my study CHAPTER III: SOME EXPERIENCE USED TO IMPROVE REAL SITUATIONS I General understanding of Synonyms and Antonyms [5] What is “Synonym”? A synonym is a word, morpheme, or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word, morpheme, or phrase in the same language For example, the words begin, start, commence, and initiate are all synonyms of one another; they are synonymous The standard test for synonymy is substitution: one form can be replaced by another in a sentence without changing its meaning Near synonyms are words considered synonymous in only one particular sense: for example, long and extended in the context long time or extended time are synonymous, but long cannot be used in the phrase extended family What is “Antonym”? Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings An antonym is one of a pair of words with opposite meanings Each word in the pair is the antithesis of the other A word may have more than one antonym Similar to synonyms, antonyms also have two types: complete antonyms such as good - bad, happy sad and incomplete antonyms such as fat– slim, hot – cool From the above concepts, there are some points we need to keep in mind: Whether words are considered complete synonyms or antonyms, there are differences between them so that they cannot be used interchangeably in all cases Therefore, besides teaching and learning the meaning of words, we need to pay attention to the context in which synonyms and antonyms can be used II Some principles when teaching synonyms and antonyms - Principle 1: Clear instructions All teachers' instructions must be detailed, clear, and have a specific purpose If instructions are general, students will not know clearly how to perform their tasks and the tasks easily come to nothing The most important part in this section is to guide students to find reliable resources to look up synonyms, antonyms as well as quick and effective ways of looking up Reliable resources for looking up synonyms and antonyms are the English-English dictionaries and specialized dictionaries of synonyms and antonyms Students can look up with a printed dictionary or an Internet dictionary A quick lookup for compound words that are not in the dictionary is to look up the original word and then determine the meaning of the word basing on its prefixes and suffixes - Principle 2: Students as the centre Regarding students as the center, teachers assign work to groups of students to find out synonyms and antonyms in specific lessons This principle helps students to actively and actively participate in lessons while helping to develop students' teamwork and presentation skills Assigning the task of finding out synonyms and antonyms in a certain lesson to students makes them brainstorm, perform their task actively, and thus they actively memorize vocabulary Assigning work to groups of students will help reduce pressure Besides, students can also help each other to complete the task The presentation can be given in Vietnamese or English, both of which help to develop students' presentation skills - Principle 3: Follow - up, comparison, contrast and evaluation Paying serious attention to the work progress of the groups helps teachers compare, contrast and evaluate students’ results better Following the work progress of each group will help teachers evaluate and comment more accurately on the results of each group In addition, teachers can promptly give appropriate help to groups facing difficulty Comparing, contrasting and evaluating the results of each group of students even of each student in the group will create more motivation for them to try to complete their tasks - Principle 4: Correction and supplement Teachers play the main role in synthesizing, editing and supplementing the results of the groups After the results of the groups have been evaluated, they need to be fully compiled, edited and supplemented before teachers return the final product to the students This is the stage where teachers play the main role to ensure that they provide complete and accurate knowledge to their students - Principle 5: Regular check and evaluation Teachers should regularly check, comment and evaluate students’ use of the knowledge of synonyms and antonyms they have learned in doing tasks focusing on vocabulary use This is the principle of "Learning parallels hands-on" It encourages students to use their learned knowledge in performing language production skills such as speaking and writing It also creates the habit of using foreign language for students III Experience of integrating teaching synonyms and antonyms in Unit of basic English 12 and designing some synonym and antonym exercises [5] Some experience of integrating teaching synonyms and antonyms in Unit of basic English 12 1.1 Assigning tasks for students to prepare before the lesson Divide students into four groups, each group is assigned a specific task: Group 1: Finding synonyms and antonyms of the following words and phrases Words and phrases attempt (v/n) pressure (n) look after (phr.) rush (v/n) support (v/n) come up (phr.)
