same link by allocating a different time interval (“slot” or “slice”) for the transmission of each channel (i.e the channels take turns to use the link.) TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A communications technique that uses a common channel (multipoint or broadcast) for communications among multiple users by allocating unique time slots to different transmission sources Transmission Control Protocol A protocol developed for the Internet to get data from one network device to another; TCP uses a retransmission strategy to ensure that data will not be lost in transmission (TCP) Transmission Rate Includes all over-the-air data This includes the user data (information rate), iDirect overhead, and FEC encoding bits Transponder A device in a communications satellite that receives signals from the earth, translates and amplifies them on another frequency, and then retransmits them UHF Ultra High Frequency Band in the 500-900 MHz range, including TV channels 14 through 83 Uplink The Earth station used to transmit signals to a satellite and the stream of signals going up to the satellite Upstream Upstream carrier (synonymous to inbound carrier) is the carrier from the remote modem to the Hub, via the satellite Carrier VHF Very High Frequency, Refers to electromagnetic waves between approximately 54 MHz and 300 MHz VSAT Very Small Aperture Terminal Means of transmission of video, voice, and data to a satellite Used in business applications 604 iBuilder User Guide iDX Release 4.1.x Index A ABS see Automatic Beam Selection accelerated GRE tunnels 193 accepting changes automatically accepting changes 19 enabling accept changes button 19 acquisition aperture 158 activating remotes 349 active users pane 438 activity log 51–54 copying data from 53 list of selectable activities 51 viewing 52 adaptive TDMA acquisition margin (M3) 165 adaptive parameters of inroute group 159 adding adaptive carriers to an inroute group 447 configuring adaptive parameters per remote 207 configuring uplink control parameters 164 converting an inroute group to adaptive TDMA 446 converting to adaptive TDMA 445 enabling superburst 83 fade slope margin (M1) 164 goal of frequency hopping in adaptive TDMA 156 hysteresis margin (M2) 164 inroute group composition allowed dropout factor for IGC selection 159 carrier-specific IGC parameters 162 configuring IGCs 161 default IGC 159 enabling a fixed IGC 159, 458 selecting a carrier’s MODCOD for an IGC 163 update frequency for IGC selection 159 measurement spacing 165 prerequisites for converting to adaptive TDMA 445 selecting adaptive modulation 82 selecting carrier payload size 82 static vs adaptive TDMA carriers 156 updating an inroute group composition 449 verifying network operation after conversion 455 iBuilder User Guide iDX Release 4.1.x antenna 69 antenna, adding 69 applying changes to roaming remotes 370 applying configurations 362 Automatic Beam Selection 503–522 adding beams to a network 505 adding elevation / gain pairs for flat plate antennas 508 adding skew angle / gain pairs for flat plate antennas using OpenAMIP 509 antenna reflector definition 507 changing the GPS interval 516 changing the minimum look angle 512 changing the usable beam timeout 515 configuring a local mapserver IP address 516 configuring a remote for 509 configuring hunt frequency 511 configuring the initial tx power offset 511 determining a remote’s initial tx power offset 521 determining beam numbers 521 disabling or enabling the rx-only feature 516 forcing a beam switch 521 IP address of antenna 510 muting the remote transmitter when mapless 515 reading the tx power from the beam map 521 remote console commands 517 setting download timeout 514 setting network acquisition timers 514 setting OpenAMIP parameters 511 setting Orbit SBC parameters 512 setting SeaTel DAC parameters 512 setting up the configuration file 504 starting the map server 506 supported antennas 507 Automatic Beam Switching see Automatic Beam Selection B bandwidth adding 77 beam selection see beam switching for mobile remotes;
