They are used to modify the preceding noun and tell us exactly which person or thing is being - A defining clause is essential to clear the preceding noun and gives essential information about a noun * Notes : - Can be omitted if it is the object of the verb - Don't use commas to enclose the clause II NON - DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES : Position : - Non – defining relative clauses are put after nouns which are defined already - Non – defining relative clauses are used to add extra information about the person or thing we have already known - Put commas at the begining and at the end of the sentence Usages: a They are used when a noun is a proper name or noun Example : Michael Jackson, who is the King of Pop music, is admired by young peolpe Non – definite R.clause b The noun is determined by a demonstrative adjectives ( this, that, these, those ) Example : This the result of our work, which I am pleased with c The noun is modified by a possessive pronouns ( his , her, our ) Example : Last night , we went to Jane's party, which we enjoyed very much d The noun is modified by an attribute Example: The strike at the car factory, which lasted ten days, is now over * Notes : - Never use “ that ” to replace “ who (m)” or “which” UNIT 10 : RELATIVE WITH PREPOSITION I Examples : The man is Tom’s teacher Tom is taking to him → The man whom Tom is talking to is Tom’s teacher Or : The man to whom Tom is talking is Tom’s teacher The exam lasted two hours We are successful in it → The exam which we are successful in lasted two hours Or : The exam in which we are successful lasted two hours II Formular : whom ( For people ) Preposition + (in, at, on, of, for, ) which ( For things ) III Usages : - Relative pronouns as an object of a preposition in defining relative clauses can follow the preposition: prep + whom/ which In this case only whom (for persons) or which (for things) is possible We don't use that after a comma - In formal English we can put the preposition before relative pronouns ( whom , which ) - In informal English we often put preposition at the end of clause ( that , which, whom ) reffered to * Notes : - Never use preposition after that / who - Prepositions like without , during , since can’t be placed at the end of clause UNIT 11 : RELATIVE CLAUSES REPLACED BY PARTICIPLES AND AN INFINITE PHRASE I Relative clauses replaced by present participles: Examples : The man is Mr Parker He is watching T.V → The man who is watching T.V is Mr Parker Or : The man watching T.V is Mr Parker The road is very narrow It leads to the church → The road which leads to the church is very narow Or : The road leading to the church is very narow II Relative clauses replaced by past participles (V3/Ved) A Examples : The shirt is 20 dollars It was made from cotton → The shirt which is was made from cotton is 20 dollars Or : The shirt made from cotton is 20 dollars The boy was very sad He was punished by the teacher → The boy who was punished by the teacher was very sad Or : The boy punished by the teacher was very sad B Formular : Active V – ing (Present participle ) Relative clause Replaced Passive P P(Ved/V3 ) ( Past participles ) - Present Participles can be used to replace relative clauses when the verb in the clause is active ( Relative pronoun + active verb ) - Past Participles can be used used to replace relative clauses when the verb in the clause is passive ( Relative pronoun + passive verb verb ) * Notes : - We can use a present participle to replace a relative clause which has an active meaning - We can use a past participle to replace a relative which has a passive meaning III Relative clauses replaced by an infinitive phrase: A Examples : Tom is always the first person He helps us when we're in difficulty → Tom is always the first person who helps us when we're in difficulty Or : Tom is always the first person to help us when we're in difficulty John was the last student He was interviewed for that job → John was the last student who was interviewed for that job Or : John was the last student to be interviewed for that job B Formular : the first……the next the last / the only and adjectives in superlatives (NOUN ) + RELATIVE PRONOUN + V → to + V the first… the next the last / the only and adjectives in superlatives (NOUN ) + RELATIVE PRONOUN + V → to be + V3 / Ved - To-infinitive can be used to replace Relative clauses when the preceding N/ Pron contain the first / second, the next, last, only and the superlatives (we can leave out the noun (except after only) if the meaning is clear) - To-infinitive can also be used to replace relative clauses when there is an idea of purpose or permission Example : Jane had a few letters that she had to type → Jane had a few letters to UNIT 13 : CLEFT SENTENCES : ( Câu chẻ - câu nhấn mạnh ) CLEFT SENTENCE IN THE ACTIVE I Subject focus : We use cleft sentence to emphasize the subject of the action It+is/was + NOUN (Subject) + Who/ that + V Examples : The boy visited his uncle last month → It was the boy who / that visited his uncle last month Collecting stamps help me understand about the world → It is collecting stamps that help me understand about the world II Object focus : We use cleft sentences to emphasize the object of the action It is/ was + NOUN (Object) + that + S +V Examples : I received a letter from my mother yesterday → It was a letter that I received from my mother yesterday David met Mary at your party → It was Mary that David met at your party III Adverbial focus : We use cleft sentences to emphasize the adverb ( time / place / …… ) It is/ was + Adv + That + S +V +O Ex1 : I bought this dress at this shop three days ago → It was three days ago that I bought this dress at this shop Ex2 : The pupils read books in the library → It is in the library that the pupils read books UNIT 14 : TAG QUESTIONS I Nếu động từ câu phát biểu khẳng đỉnh động từ tag question phủ định ngược lại Examples : They started the meeting at two o'clock yesterday, didn’t they ?
