PART VII Give the correct form of the word in bracket to complete the passage Your answers: The (say) “never judge a book by its cover” could not be

more true for Ridiculous Rules by Marjorie Allen The cover is completely blank, whereas the book is crammed full of wonderful examples and anecdotes Allen is an (speak) critic of what is taught to native and non-native speakers of English, and has issued a (declare) of war against textbooks and style books which tell lies

Take the ridiculous and (mean) rule of never ending a sentence with a preposition The lovely - if famous – story goes, that Winston Churchill, well-known for his numerous

(write) as well as for being British Prime Minister during the

Second World War, received a manuscript back from an ignorant (edit), who had told him rather rudely that he had to

(phrase) a sentence which ended with a preposition Churchill

responded by making the simple yet forceful (state) in the margin: “This is an impertinence up with which I will not put.” – the (imply) being that not to end a sentence with a preposition often sounds ridiculous in English, Sadly, Allen informs us that the story is probably mere 10 (hear), and that Churchill may have actually only written “rubbish!” in the margin 10 C READING

PART VIII Read the passage and choose the best answer A, B, C, or D to each of the questions

of maintaining a constant body temperature Instead of trying to keep down the body

temperature deep inside the body, which would involve the expenditure of water and energy, desert mammals allow their temperatures to rise to what would normally be fever height, and temperatures as high as 46 degrees Celsius have been measured in Grant's gazelles The overheated body then cools down during the cold desert night, and indeed the temperature may fall unusually low by dawn, as low as 34 degrees Celsius in the camel This is an advantage since the heat of the first few hours of daylight is absorbed in warming up the body, and an excessive buildup of heat does not begin until well into the day

Another strategy of large desert animals is to tolerate the loss of body water to a point that would be fatal for non-adapted animals The camel can lose up to 30 percent of its body weight as water without harm to itself, whereas human beings die after losing only 12 to 13 percent of their body weight An equally important adaptation is the ability to replenish this water loss at one drink Desert animals can drink prodigious volumes in a short time, and camels have been known to imbibe over 100 liters in a few minutes A very dehydrated person, on the other hand, cannot drink enough water to dehydrate at one session, because the human stomach is not sufficiently big and because a too rapid dilution of the body fluids causes death from water intoxication

The tolerance of water loss is of obvious advantage in the desert, as animals not have to remain near a water hole but can obtain food from grazing sparse and far-flung pastures Desert-adapted mammals have the further ability to feed normally when extremely dehydrated, it is a common experience in people that appetite is lost even under conditions of moderate thirst

1 What is the main topic of the passage?

A Weather variations in the desert B Adaptations of desert animals C Diseased of desert animals D Human use of desert animals According to the passage, why is light coloring an advantage to large desert animals?

A It helps them hide from predators

B It does not absorb sunlight as much as dark colors C It helps them see their young at night

D It keeps them cool at night

3 The word "maintaining" is closest in meaning to _

A measuring B inheriting C preserving D delaying The author uses of Grant's gazelle as an example of _

A an animal with a low average temperature

B an animal that is not as well adapted as the camel

C a desert animal that can withstand high body temperatures D a desert animal with a constant body temperature

5 When is the internal temperature of a large desert mammal lower?

A Just before sunrise B In the middle of the day C Just after sunset D Just after drinking The word "tolerate" is closest in meaning to _

(7)

7 What causes water intoxication?

A Drinking too much water very quickly B Drinking polluted water C Bacteria in water D Lack of water

8 What does the author imply about desert-adapted mammals?

A They not need to eat much food B They can eat large quantities quickly

C They easily lose their appetites D They can travel long distances looking for food

9 Why does the author mention humans in the second paragraph?

A To show how they use camels B To contrast them to desert mammals

C To give instructions about desert survival D To show how they have adapted to desert life

10 Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an adaptation of large desert animals? A Variation in body temperatures B Eating while dehydrated C Drinking water quickly D Being active at night Your answers:

Coal, oil and natural gas supply modern civilization with most of its power However, not only are supplies of these fuels limited, but they are a major source of pollution Therefore, it’s importantto improve, explore and develop such alternativesenergy sources as nuclear, water, solar and wind power Each of these alternatives, however, has advantages and

disadvantages

Nuclear power plants efficiently produce large amounts of electricity without polluting the atmosphere; however, they are costly to build and maintain, and they create the difficult problem ofwhat to with nuclear waste Hydroelectric power is inexpensive and

environmentally safe, but impractical for communities located far from moving water Wind power is a pollution –free source of renewable energy but it can’t be used in many parts of the world where there is insufficient wind Solar power is renewable, it does not cause pollution and it does not add the earth’s heat load However, it is difficult to collect and store Solar power also requires expensive equipment

Every source of energy has its disadvantages One way to minimize them is to use less energy Conservation efforts coupled with renewable energy resources will ensure supplies of clean, affordable energy for humanity’s future

II READING

Part 1: Read the passage and choose the correct answer for the following questions: All at once Hazel was coming in through the French windows, pulling off gardening gloves, and Bill was entering through the door, both at once So I only had time to take one quick look at her before I turned to face him All very confusing What that first glimpse showed me was that time had thickened her figure but didn't seem to have made much difference to her face It still had good skin and youthful outlines She was holding a bunch of roses – must have been cutting them in the garden while waiting for me The gardening gloves lent a delightfully informal touch It was quite an entrance, though Bill spoilt it a bit by making his at the same time

Bill seemed longer and thinner His tightly massed hair had a tinge of grey Apart from that, twenty years had done nothing to him, except deepen the lines of thoughtfulness that had already, when I knew him, begun to spread across his face Or was that all? I looked at him again, more carefully, as he looked away from me at Hazel Weren't his eyes different somehow? More inward looking than ever? Gazing in not merely at his thoughts, but at something else, something he was keeping hidden or perhaps protecting

Then we were chattering and taking glasses in our hands, and I came back to earth For the first ten minutes we were all so defensive, so carefully probing, that nobody learnt anything Bill had forgotten me altogether, that much was clear He was engaged in getting to know me from scratch, very cautiously so as not to hit a wrong note, with the object of getting me to contribute a big subscription to his African project I kept trying to absorb details about Hazel, but Bill was talking earnestly about African education, and the strain of appearing to concentrate while actually thinking about his wife proved so great that I decided it would be easier just to concentrate So I did I let him hammer away for about ten more minutes, and then the daughter, who seemed to be acting as parlourmaid, showed in another visitor Evidently we were to be four at lunch
