v ABSTRACT The thesis aims at unravelling salient linguistic features of a non-native variety of English as used in a different text type - that is headline From this point, the thesis addresses the headlines of English and Vietnamese news lexically and syntactically from a contrastive perspective To meet the above aims, this study attempts to compare and contrast news headlines in English and Vietnamese language published in an American news site to figure out the types, the roles of lexical and syntactic features of newspaper headlines The second, some differences and similarities between newspaper headlines of the two languages will be discovered The last portion of the study is intended to analyze the implications of the findings to language teaching and translating The thesis is also hoped to present further insights on how headlines are constructed and provide basis for more studies on the genre In order to accomplish the aims of the research, the qualitative approach will be first used The following is quantitative approach The last one is a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches The study employs three main methods namely data collecting and material analysis research method, descriptive research method, and contrastive method The findings from the study hopefully will benefit not only translators of the two languages but also teachers and researchers who are interested in the issue Criticism and comments are welcome for more profession of the thesis vi LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS A: Adverb C: Complement Eng: English O: Object S: Subject V: Recapitulation The study is an attempt to compare and contrast news headlines in English and Vietnamese language published in VOA – an American news website to figure out the types, the roles, the characteristics of lexical and syntactic features of newspaper headlines, and then discover some differences and similarities between newspaper headlines of the two languages The last portion of the study is intended to analyze the implications of the findings to language teaching and translating During the process of carrying out this research, these objectives have been usually paid much attention to with the aim to achieve all Employing descriptive and contrastive research methods, the study has been analyzed and compared each linguistic feature in both English and Vietnamese selected news headlines During the process of analyzing the data, the concrete computational statistics have been done for each characteristic Besides, the comments aiming at comparing the two languages have been also presented From the results with the major findings in the lexical and syntactic features of headlines, some pedagogical implications in teaching journalistic English as well as teaching translation have been given 4.2 Concluding remarks The major findings of the study include the lexical and syntactic differences and similarities between English and Vietnamese newspaper headlines in VOA news As for the former, the two languages used in headlines are different in the use of acronyms and abbreviations, English headlines tend to use them more than Vietnamese ones It is the same with the use of adverbs and prepositions Moreover, frequent omissions of certain words such as articles, verb “be”, 51 "and", "people/person", "pronoun", "that" were major features of English headlines Also, the use of tenses is different In Vietnamese headlines adverbs of time are used to indicate the time of an action, the verb form does not agree with the subject like in English The English and Vietnamese headlines are lexically similar with a dominant use of nouns, active voice and present tense As for the latter, the study discovers that in English headlines, complex headlines are used quite frequently, however, it is opposite in Vietnamese headlines In English headlines, it can be explored various forms of non-finite clauses, in which past participle form after subject, “to infinitive” form after subject, are used with quite a high frequency These forms make headlines shortened and still ensure the tense and aspect meanings (past, future or in progress) In Vietnamese headlines, non-finite clauses can be found more than in English headlines All of these contain verbs at initial position of the clause Some words such as đã, sẽ, etc or adverbs sometimes are supplemented in order to denote time, to add more information or to express the reporters’ attitude Many English headlines appear as verbless clauses, whereas, this type cannot be found in Vietnamese headlines Besides, it can be seen that the frequency of using sentential headlines account for the most in both English and Vietnamese samples The writers of the two languages used a great number of simple sentences with SVOA structure as the most frequent occurrence Despite of accounting for a not-very-high percentage of non-sentential headlines in the corpora, phrases appear as typical of headline language The phrasal headlines found were equal in both English and Vietnamese samples in which nominal ones outnumbered of any other types Statement headlines are the most frequent 52 kind in newspapers because they fulfill one of the functions of headlines which is to inform the reader of what the article is about It can be said that the application of contrastive analysis is really wide, especially in language teaching It is very useful in the sense of comparing two languages which help teachers easily transfer knowledge and help learners acquire it quickly Therefore, this study, to some extent, has contributed to the vivid world of contrastive analysis between English and Vietnamese This study which concentrates on the lexical and syntactic characteristics of newspaper headlines will hopefully bring about useful knowledge for those who care about the field particularly the Vietnamese teachers of English 4.3 Limitation of the study This study, whose scope is the headlines taken from VOA – an online newspaper – in a five-day corpus, generally answer the research questions given and achieve the objectives set before However, it has some limitations that should be taken into consideration in further studies First of all, the number of headlines should be more in order to have more sufficient data; second, if the headlines were taken from many different sources, the results could be more significantly influenced Third, the research questions were not answered on the base of cultural differences One more thing, syntactic features of headlines were analyzed and grouped in details, however, it was not explained why these types of groups were formed and due to which situation that these headlines were classified 4.4 Recommendations and suggestions for further research An important implication for foreign language teaching has been drawn out from the results of this study as it can give a source of helpful material to the 53 teachers of English Future researches can shed some light on the features of English and Vietnamese newspaper headlines from some other grammar school perspective such as functional or cognitive grammar To journalists it is possible to pay great attention to the choice of word and structure when writing headlines in order to get their readers To translators, a study on lexical and syntactic features in English and Vietnamese headlines helps to translate headlines without difficulties and misunderstanding even when headlines not accompany with the content of the articles Therefore, a profound understanding of linguistic features in English electronic newspaper headlines will certainly make a great help for translators in their work This thing is very important because it can decide the quality of translating versions is correct or incorrect If translators master distinctive characteristics of headline language, headlines translation will become much smoother and easier The author would like to encourage ones who are interested in the study on headline language, especially in linguistic features of headlines to carry studying under the following aspects:  Cultural influence on newspaper headline  Collocations or idiomatic expressions in newspaper headlines  Ambiguity in English and Vietnamese newspaper headlines 54 REFERENCES In English: Abdulla, M.A & Salih, Y.M., (2012)
