everyday life communication as well as in exchange of ideas in terms of culture, society, economy, politics and business all over the world As a result, we need to enhance the mastering of principles in English usage In learning English, grammar is an important factor and normally carefully considered Besides, conjunctions have been one of the most fascinating topics that attract a large number of people It is one of the four main categories of adverbials and it plays an important role in joining phrases, clauses, sentences in order to create coherence in every text So, this study investigates how learners of English and Vietnamese use the conjunctions in some marketing newsletters The writer use two main research approaches They are quantitative and qualitative Data used in this study are collected from various sources some English magazines, marketing newsletters in English and Vietnamese, internet, media as well as other related research To obtain the main objectives of the study which is to show the similarities and differences of the conjunctions in English and Vietnamese marketing Newsletters The results show that in conjunctions, both two languages have the same kinds However, they have some kinds and the usages are not the same in English and Vietnamese The writer would like to conduct this research with the hope that our study can bring some theoretical and practical value for both linguistic study and language teaching methodology vi LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS E.g: HTML: Ibid: M.A: PDF: For example Hypertext Markup Language The same author/ resources Master marketing newsletters Table 3.3 Vietnamese conjunctions in Vietnamese marketing newsletters viii 10 46 49 50 CHAPTER : INTRODUCTION 1.1 Rationale In the world of cooperation and development, English has become an international language and effective means of communication bringing nations throughout the world close together English is said to have played a very important role in the development of commerce, trade, education, technology, economics, etc in almost every country especially in Vietnam’s integration into the world Therefore, it is necessary to know how to use English correctly and communicatively In the process of learning English, having good knowledge of English grammar is of great importance, for one can express his/her ideas, feelings or emotions not only by separated words but also by meaningful sentences formed grammatically Thus, the importance of grammar is the researcher’s first reason for choosing this topic The second reason the writer chooses conjunctions to study is that when grammar is under discussion, most people tend to appreciate the significances of tenses, aspects, voices, order of clause elements rather than conjunctions Conjunctions, functioning as connectors and transition signals, actually play an important role in linking sentences, paragraphs, or clauses Apart from this, thanks to conjunctions, various kinds of grammatical sentences are formed such as compound sentences and complex sentences One more reason that has inspired the researcher to the topic is her deep interest in English Language, especially in newsletters The fact is that, a newsletter is regarded as a form that many companies use to promote their products It serves as a smaller version of the newspaper to create good relationships with customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders It goes without saying that newsletters contribute towards the overall success of the business Newsletters are also known as consultant letters, so they need to have the logic and coherence to attract customers Besides, conjunctions are seen as an essential means of linking so as to increase the persuasion in newsletters For the above reasons, the writer would like to choose the topic “Conjunctions in some English Marketing Newsletters with reference to Vietnamese equivalents” with the attempt to find out the similarities and differences in conjunction usages in English and Vietnamese Newsletters It’s also CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION 4.1 Recapitulation After much exploration and consideration, this thesis has come to these following points In terms of frequency of using conjunctions in English and Vietnamese Marketing Newsletters, as previously discussed, frequency of occurrence of conjunctions in English and Vietnamese Marketing Newsletters is equivalent The most frequently English conjunctions found in marketing newsletters are “and”, “or”, “but”, the Vietnamese equivalents most in use are “và, hoặc, nhưng” Regarding the similarities and differences in conjunction usages in some English and Vietnamese Newsletters, based on the results from synthesizing the occurrence frequency of conjunctions in English and Vietnamese marketing newsletter samples, the writer has conducted a succinct contrastive analysis to find out the similarities and differences of conjunctions in terms of syntactic and semantic features in both languages As regards syntactic features, we see the following similarities: (i) both English and Vietnamese conjunctions have the function as joiners or linking devices (ii) conjunctions in two languages are used as transition signals of ideas and sentences to create the logic and coherence in a paragraph (iii) coordinators and subordinators exist in both English and Vietnamese (iv) positions of conjunctions used flexibly in English and Vietnamese (initial, medial or final positions) However, some differences have been also worthily noted: (i) English newsletters writers are likely to use one conjunction as a linking word in a sentence rather than two as in the Vietnamese ones (ii) English conjunctions are divided into three types (coordinators, subordinators, and correlatives) whereas there are only two main types in Vietnamese (iii) there exist some words whose functions are both conjunctions and prepositions (e.g since, for …) In terms of semantic features, the comparison between the two languages has led to the identification of some similarities: (i) English and Vietnamese 54 conjunctions have the same literal senses (ii) conjunctions used as the means of expressing meanings such as reason, concession, purpose … (iii) there appear many conjunctions representing the same semantic relationship in the both languages (e.g though/ although/ even though express the concessive relation) (iv) the order expressing of meaning in cause – effect relation and the concessive relation two languages are similar Nevertheless, both languages appear to be different to a larger extent: (i) Vietnamese conjunction meanings tend to be more flexible than those in English (ii) In English there exist conjunctions expressing positive or negative meanings while this phenomenon seems to be not clear in Vietnamese (iii) conjunctions “và”, “ hoặc” in Vietnamese are used with only one meaning whereas conjunctions “and”, “or” in English possess other different senses Although English is far different from Vietnamese in many aspects, both languages agree that conjunctions play an important role in creating cohesion in sentences and paragraphs Therefore, the study was conducted with hope that students study as well as English teachers will get benefits from the study that is presumably a necessary source for teaching and learning conjunctions 4.2 Concluding remarks This study provides three main contributions to the research on conjunctions in the field of English language The first contribution is the thesis’s addition to the previous studies about conjunctions, especially the very limited studies acquired by Vietnamese learners Secondly, the present study is the first to conduct a contrastive analysis of syntactic and semantic features of English conjunctions as well as Vietnamese conjunctions to find out the similarities and differences unveiled in Marketing Newsletters so that readers, particularly students can deeply understand how to use conjunctions in both languages Last but not least, the study gives some useful implications for teaching, learning and translating conjunctions in general As a result, these implications can be applied as a general framework or model for teaching conjunctions This is extremely significant for learners in particular 55 4.3 Limitation of the study The scope of the study has limited this research to certain areas, leaving behind not a few matters that need to be revealed One thing that the researcher left unresolved in this study is that it only focuses on the contrastive analysis of syntactic and semantic features across two languages: English and Vietnamese Owing to the time constraints and the requirement of the minor M.A research, the writer has been unable to explore other features of conjunctions to help teachers and learners of English have a thorough understanding of their usages The second limitation of the study is that the number of English and Vietnamese marketing newsletters taken to analyze does not really cover all kinds of conjunctions Therefore, there can be some more similarities and differences in the use of conjunctions in both languages that the researcher has not discovered Moreover, the paper only focuses on finding the similarities and differences in conjunction usages in English and Vietnamese marketing newsletters, other aspects such as the format of newsletters have not been studied The last limitation is due to the limited knowledge and experience of the author, the thesis inevitably remains some mistakes and shortcomings 4.4 Recommendations and suggestions for further research 4.4.1 Recommendations - As for the teaching staff The finding from this study can be applied to the teaching to help teachers gain a better understanding of the importance of sentence connectors in English and their Vietnamese equivalents An accurate explanation of the subtle meanings of these words is necessary and helpful for users to obtain greater precision in using them and to avoid misunderstanding or embarrassment in communicating Students should be provided more opportunities to practice English under the teacher’s supervision and teachers need to provide many materials which are helpful and usable in real-life situations - As for the students Materials and ways for learning to speak English are now diversified Moreover, students should not only learn to speak English but also understand its 56 culture They should be aware of the existence of pragmatic competence and the bad results of lacking it Thanks to observation, description and classroom or group discussion, students may recognize factors of pragmatic awareness such as active listening, eye contact, facial expressions, gestures and body position This awareness then makes them more prepared to use the language in natural situations - As for the translation work In the same way, when translating English conjuncts into Vietnamese, the translator should select suitable Vietnamese translational equivalents since there are many Vietnamese translational equivalents for only one English conjunct The selection of suitable Vietnamese translational equivalents requires the translators to have a profound knowledge of the Vietnamese language so that his translation sounds natural It means that the way of using them is in accordance with the way Vietnamese people speak or write 4.4.2 Suggestions for further research The present research has provided all sorts of conjunctions in English and Vietnamese Moreover, the writer also has conducted a contrastive analysis in terms of syntax and semantic features to find the similarities and differences between them This may be considered the first step in linguistic research Hopefully, this will pave the way for further studies on this subject with a larger scope, going far from what the writer has mentioned such as: - Studying on the significance of conjunctions as a cohesive device in teaching writing - Conducting a corpus-based investigation of conjunctive usages in the Vietnamese students’ writin 57 REFERENCES IN ENGLISH 1.Alice, O & Ann, H (1990), Writing Academic English, second edition, AddisonWesley
