How can scientists predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain areas They happen in places where pieces of the earth’s surface meet This pattern causes them to shake the same places many times Foe example, earthquakes often occur on the west-coast of North and South America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of Asia

Another way predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface, like a sudden drop of water level in the ground Some people say animals can predict earthquakes Before earthquakes people have been chickens sitting in the trees, fish jumping out of the water, snakes leaving their holes and other animals acting strangely

After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food , water, and medical supplies The amount of destruction caused by an earthquake depends on where it happens, what time it happens, and how strong it is It also depends on types of building, soil conditions and population Of the 6000 earthquakes in the earth each year, only about fifteen cause great damage and many deaths

By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can considerably increase their children's language development It is surprising, but true How parents talk to their children makes a big difference in the children's language development If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is reading, the child's language skills increase

A study was done with two or three-year-old children and their parents Half of the thirty children participants were in the experimental study; the other half acted as the control group In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather than yes-no questions For example, the parent should ask, "What is the doggy doing?" rather than, "Is the doggy running away?" Experimental parents were also instructed how to expand on their children's answer, how to suggest alternative possibilities, and how to praise correct answers

At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ on levels of language development, but at the end of one month, the children in the experimental group were 5.5 months ahead of the control group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary Nine months later, the children in the experimental group still showed an advance of months over the children in the control group

Parents and teachers alike have mixed opinions as to when it is appropriate and most beneficial to the child Many preschool children learn to work with a mouse and play interactive games before they learn to write or lean their ABC’s It is true that computers can be used as very effective tools for learning, but at what age you begin?

Along with jogging and swimming, cycling is one of the best all-round forms of exercise It can help to increase your strength and energy, giving you more efficient muscles and stronger heart But increasing your strength is not the only advantage of cycling Because you’re not carrying the weight of your body on your feet, it’s a good form of exercise for people with painful feet or backs However, with all forms of exercise it’s important to start slowly and build up gently Doing too much too quickly can damage muscles that aren’t used to working If you have any doubts about taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to your doctor and ask his/her advice

Ideally you should be cycling at least two or three times a week For the exercise to be doing you good, you should get a little out of breath Don’t worry that if you begin to lose your breath, it could be dangerous and there must be something wrong with your heart This is simply not true; shortness of breath shows that the exercise is having the right effect However, if you find you are in pain then you should stop and take a rest

46 According to the writer, it is best to go cycling

A once a week B at least two or three times a month

C at least two or three times a week D every day 47 All forms of exercise must be started

(43)

48 People with back problems might go cycling because A it enables them to carry the weight of their body on their feet B it helps them to relieve their backache

C it helps to make their backs become stronger

D it does not make them carry the weight of their body on their feet

49 You should not worry about the shortness of breath because

A it is a sign of exercise having the right effect

B it shows that you should stop and take a rest

C it shows that there is something wrong with your heart D it is a sign of your getting rid of your heart problem

50 Which of the following is NOT included in the advantages of cycling?

A Giving you a stronger heart B Increasing you strength and energy

Questions 31 – 35: Read the following passage and then choose the best answer to the questions by circling the letter A, B, C or D:

Women in Britain are without doubt better off today than they used to be At the beginning of the 19th century, women seemed to have almost no rights at all They could not vote , or even sign a contract Their marriages were arranged by their parents They were once kept at home and if they were allowed to work, they were never given responsible jobs It is strange to think that, as far as we know, most women were happy with that situation

Today the position is quite different Women now can vote and choose their own husbands In 1970, a law was passed to give them an equal share of property in the case of divorce, and in the same year the Equal Pay Act gave them the right to get equal payment with them for work of equal value Yet , despite these changes, there is no doubt that there are still great differences in status between men and women Many employers-maybe even in the majority-seem to ignore the Equal Pay Act It is also more difficult for a woman to get a promotion than a man does

There is sex discrimination in England although it has not been so serious as it was More and more women got out to work, earn more money, get high positions in the society, and live independently However there are two great problems to solve The first problem is men’s attitude They always think that women are inferior and are the weaker sex We not know exactly how long it will take them to change their mind And the other problem whish is much more difficult is women’s attitude They should be ready to struggle to change their fate
