Warm-up: Name it (5mins)

Arrange some chairs, back to back, in the middle of the room

Choose phonics cards and place them on the chairs Play a song (use a song from the previous units) When the music stops the students pick up a

phonics card and, one at time, tell Teacher the name of the item pictured on their phonics card The student who gives an incorrect answer is out of

the activity

Play the activity as many times as necessary

Revision & Practice

1 Listen Read along (Track 26) (10mins) (book closed) Tell the students that it’s story time Ask them if they like reading stories and what their

favourite story (or character) is

Prepare phonics cards of these words: ant, bed, dog, cat, clock, dragon, drum

Ask the students to read out the words

Invite students to guess what they think the story is about (do not dismiss any ideas)

Ask the students to open their books

Ask them questions about what they can see in the pictures

e.g Teacher: (pointing to the dog in picture 1) Look! What’s this?

Class: (It’s a) dog!

Teacher: (pointing to the bed in picture 1) Yes! The dog is on the ….

Class: bed! etc

follow the story in their books, pointing to the pictures of the key words

Play the CD again pausing for the students to repeat

Ask individual students to read the story aloud

Extension (optional)

Ask the students to read the story again

Then ask them to look at the pictures for a few minutes and close their books

Say a few sentences (some correct and some incorrect) and ask the students to say yes or no e.g Teacher: The dog is on the bed.

Student 1: Yes!

Teacher: The dragon is on the clock. Student 2: No! etc

2 Which animals are in the story? Colour (10mins)

Point to the animals and ask students to name them Ask the students to say which animals appear in

the story

Ask them to colour those animals Activity 1: Act Out (10mins)

Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key words

Invite the students to mime them (the dog, the bed, the ant, the cat, the clock, the dragon, the drum. Have the students come to the front of the

classroom and act out the story

Encourage them to have fun as they perform Evaluations:

Warm-up: Run and Touch (5mins)  Put up some phonics cards on the board  Line up students into teams of

 Call a student from each team to stand 1m from the board

 Read words out loud, one at time (e.g ant), the students must run to tap the card of that word  The student who taps the correct card first will

get point for his/her team The team with the most points wins the activity

Explain the activity

Ask the students to say the letters

The students match the upper case letters to the lower case ones

Ask individual students to repeat the letter and the sound

Go around and provide any necessary help

Ask individual students to say out the letter and the sound

4 Look and tick ( ) (6mins) Explain the activity

Ask the students to name the items

Ask them to tick the correct letter that corresponds to each picture

Ask students to match the pictures that begin with the same letter and then match them to the

corresponding letter

Activity: Get in line (7mins)

Ask 12 students to come to the front of the classroom and make a circle

Give the students randomly 12 phonics cards of the words they have learnt Say: Go!

The students must find and get in line with other students holding cards beginning with the same letter

The first students to make a complete line win the activity

Warm-up: How’s your memory? (4mins) Write the words the students have learnt so far on

the board Give the students minutes to remember the words Erase them

Divide the class into small teams

Ask them write down the words in minutes Then put teams’ lists up the board

The team with the most correct words wins the activity

Revision & Practice

7 Say the words Circle the beginning sound (7mins)

Click Review and part

Click on the apple picture and have students repeat and circle the correct letter

Repeat for all pictures

Have students come and click on the correct letters to check answers

Read the letters in the first question and elicit what comes next

The students read the letters and write the correct letter in their boxes

Ask them to write the beginning letter (upper case) that corresponds to each picture

Refer the students to the upper and lower case letters in the grid as well as the sentences below it Click on the ball Ask students where it should go

Have students read the other sentences and draw the objects in the boxes

Go around and provide any necessary help Have students come and click on the object and

Write the words the students have learnt in the units on the board

Ask students to choose any five and copy them in their notebooks (make sure they haven’t all chosen the same five words)

Call out one word after another and point to it on the board

Any students who has that word can cross it off The winner is the first student who crosses out all

Invite a student to come to the front of the class and whisper the name of a vocab item

The student does some actions for the rest of the class to guess what it is

e.g letter A says /æ/

Show the students how to write the letter stroke by stroke and have them it in their book

Point to each picture and elicit the letter, the sound and the name of the item

Ask the students to colour the pictures

Ask students to write the names of the vocab items
