I. OBJECTIVES - By the end the lesson, students will be able to use prepositions of time and used to (to talk about the action which always happen in the past), and further practice in simple past tense. - Developing speaking, reading and writing skills. II. LANGUAGE FOCUS - Grammar:* Past simple tense. ( Review) * Prepositions of time. ( Review) * Used to + Bare infinitive. - Vocabulary: III. TECHNIQUES - Comunicative approach, pelmanism, questions - answers, role play. IV. TEACHING AIDS - Textbook, pictures, word cards, … V. TIME: 45 minutes VI . PROCEDURES Sections Steps Techniques and contents *Warm-up (3’) *Pelmanism -Teacher prepares 12 cards with number on one side and the verbs on the other. -Teacher sticks the cards on the board so that the students can only see the numbers, make sure the verbs are mixed up. -Teacher devides class into 2 groups. -Teacher chooses in each group one person ( leader) and play it. - Students choose and turn 2 cards over at the same time. - Teacher corrects and students take note. run ride fly sit eat come ate flew came rode ran sat Simple past tense *Presentation (5’) - -Teacher revises the simple past tense: - + Teacher asks students : the form and usage of the simple past. - + Students answer, teacher corrects and students take note. - Form: (+) S+ V 2 / ed + O …… - (-) S+ didn’t+ V+ O …… - (?) Did+ S+ V+ O …… ? - Yes, S+ did - No, S+ didn’t - - - 1 - + Teacher asks:” When do we use this structure?”. - + Students answer. - + Teacher reminds: - Usage: To express an action or event that happened and finished in the past, usually definite time expressions such as: last, yesterday, ago,… - Exercise 1 (2’) *Controlled practice - Teacher asks students to work individually. - Teacher invites Ss to write their keys on the board. - Teacher checks and corrects. - Teacher gives key: a) run- ran b) fly- flew c) take- took d) go- went e) have- had f) do- did g) be-was/were h) ride- rode i) eat-ate j) sit- sat k) come-came Exercise 2 (4’) - Teacher asks students to work in pair. - Teacher asks 4 pairs to read out and correct. - Teacher gives key: a) Did Lan eat rice for breakfast? b) I took a bus to school./ I went to school by bike/ I rode my bike to school. / …… c) Where were you last night/ yesterday? d) I had English / Math / …… Prepositions of time *Presentation (5’) - Teacher rivises the prepositions of time: + Teacher asks students : prepositions of time students learned ( on, in, at, after, before and between ). + Teacher asks student:” When do we use the prepositions of time?” Students answer and then teacher summarizes : We use * In+ year (in 1997) , In+ part of the day (in the morning) In+ month ( in May) , In+ century ( in the 18 th century) In+ season ( in summer) * On+ date, month, year ( on September 7, 1990) On+ day (on Monday) , On+ date (on 17) * At+ time (at 7 am) * Before+ time: tröôùc ( before 7 .30 am) * After+ time: sau ( after 5 pm) * Between …… and…… : giöõa …… vaø …… ( between 6.30 and 7.15 am) 2 Exercise 3 * Controlled Practice (5’) - Teacher asks students to work individually, then compare with their partners. - Teacher calls on some students to read their complete sentences aloud and write their answer on the board. - Teacher corrects . - Teacher gives key: a) on b) in c) between d) at/ after e) before Used to *Presentation (7’) - Teacher asks : “ Where did Nga’s grandmother use to live?”  She used to live on a farm. It isn’t Ha Noi. Hoa: No, it’s Hue. I used to stay there. 3 Exercise 4 *Controlled practice (5’) - Teacher hangs on the pictures on page 45 on the board. -Teacher lets students look at the pictures and dialogue between Nga and Hoa. - Teacher asks students to complete the dialogue using : used to with the verbs “ Live- Stay- Have- Be”. ( Work in pair) - Teacher calls on some pairs to practice in front of class. - Teacher corrects. - Teacher gives key: (1) used to have (2) used to be (3) used to live 4 *Further practice (5’) Deliberate mistakes: - Teacher reads aloud some sentences and asks students to listen carefully and try to find out the mistakes. - Students hear a mistake, stand up and say No, then correct Example: (0) T: I usually stay at home in Sunday. S S : No, on Sunday, not in Sunday (1) T: My father used to play football when he has free time. (2) T: She used live in Hanoi. (3) T: My parents will go in 3 pm. (4) T: He was born in September the second. - Teacher corrects . - Teacher gives key: (1) S S : No, had free time, not has. (2) S S : No, used to live, not used live. (3) S S : No, at 3 pm, not in 3 pm. (4) S S : No, on September the second, not in.
