it increasingly plays an important role in the world Being able to communicate effectively is perhaps the most important of all life skills It is what enables us to pass information to other people, and to understand what is said to us In reality, however, the level of English communicating skill of employees at An Nhien JSC still is not good Therefore, research topic: “ English Communication Skill of An Nhien Gemstone Jewellry Joint Stock Company, problems and solutions” is meaningful and necessary in both theory and practice to improve their communicating abilities in the workplace The study deals with finding the problems in communicting by English of staffs at An Nhien JSC In order to achieve the above mentioned objectives, the study presents the key theories related to English communication skill The researcher carried out survey questionnares among 20 staff of An Nhien JSC to get their oppinion In addition, the study also gives some solutions to improve the staff’s English communication skill Based on findings, some suggestions are given with the hope that they might be useful for staff at An Nhien Joint Stock Company in particular and other companies in general to communicating English of the staff at An Nhien Gemstone Jewellry Joint Stock Company The rationale of the study, the previous studies, research subjects and the aims, scope of the study, research methodology as well as structure of the study are also mentioned Thanks to the data foundation, the study becomes clear and detailed 1.1 Rationale For years now, English has been thought of as the global business language What this means is that more and more international companies are using English as a common language to communicate To succeed in the business world, you are going to have to learn English fluently Being bilingual is impressive, but only if the company thinks it can put your language skills to good use That’s the importance of English Knowing English is a skill that companies can use If you want to be able to negotiate with other companies, knowing English is pretty much a must You’re going to have to find a common language and English is the most likely one to be it Learning English is the first step in getting ahead in your career The actual number of multinational companies in the world is difficult to estimate One of the most recent surveys was completed in 2016 by EF Education First, which showed a 25 percent increase in the number of multinationals over the previous 10 years In 28 non-English-speaking countries, 70 percent of the companies surveyed reported that English was important to their business, while 11 percent stated that it was the main language The disparity in English English on their own and more people are able to use English in the workplace.proficiency among industries has been narrowing, with the gap between the highest and lowest industries reduced nearly by half Companies are investing more in English training, more adults are learning In An Nhien Gemstone-Jewellry Joint Stock Company, everyone is required to know English Staff of Sale Departure use English the most Working as an saler in An Nhien JSC for more than months, I find that the English usage of staff here as well as of myself still faces many problems, especially in communication skill Therefore, in order to study this problem in depth, I have conducted the research entitled: “ English Communication Skill of the staff of An Nhien Gemstone Jewellry Joint Stock Company, problems and solutions” Hopefully, this study will help the staff understand deeply the issues that they have not noticed before and suggest some solutions to solve the problems and help them improve their English commnication skill 1.2 Previous of the study There are several studies conducted to investigate English communication skill not only in workplace but also in educational environment : The study by Abdel-Rahman (2016) “Improving English Communication Skill of Ajloun National University Students”, this study aimed to enhance the oral communication skills (conversations) of ANU students The sample of the study consisted of 20 students (12 female students and male students) all of them are studying English language, the majority of the sample were the seniors and juniors students, while freshman were minority students The researchers used random sample method To achieve the objectives of the present study, the researchers used semi-structured interview as an instrument for data collection The results of this study revealed that the students of ANU face many problems related to communication skill, such as confusion and embarrassment; students did not learn speaking lessons correctly at school, and face difficulty in pronouncing some words The results also showed that the most frequent problems were the limited amount of vocabulary among students, while the least frequent problems were the difficulty in understanding questions This study also presented some of appropriate solutions to overcome the weakness in speaking skill, such as practicing speaking English inside and outside the classroom effectively, using the modern social media to communicate in English and to express the students feelings and needs According to the study in 2018 by A.Clement “English for the Workplace: The Importance of English Communication Skill for Effective Performance” find out the importance of English in workplace by conducting a survey among employees of different companies in India The results show that the necessity of English communication skill in workplace hasn't changed and the participants have reiterated the role of English as the influencing factor during interviews and at workplace In addition, it has been found that poor English communication skill can hamper the attempts of finding a good job Moreover, participants emphasized the need for in-house English training for improvement of skills required to perform their duties Among all the skills, speaking has been considered the most important skill in workplace and majority accepted that they needed to improve their speaking skills and online training has been preferred by most of the participants as the favorite mode In addition to the research of foreigner scholars such as Abdel-Rahman (2016) and A.Clement (2018), in Vietnam, there were also many studies related to this issue In 2013, Nguyen Thi Dieu Huyen had a research paper on the subject, with the title: “A study on how to improve English communication skill through extraActivities for the first year english non - Major students in Hai phong Private University” The study is about to help the first-year English non-major students at Hai Phong Private University improve their communication skill through extraactivities and to prepare for them to the basic knowledge of communication skill with higher requirement for the next graders; find out appropriate techniques for teaching communication lesson which draw student’s attention into the lesson Some good techniques, especially the extra activities wil be given out in order to improve their communication skill It should be noted that this paper should not be considered exclusive to English non-major students at Hai Phong Private University In fact, the fundamental concepts and result of this paper can be applied to most English learners All the studies showed the reader a more multidimensional view and to recognize the problems when practicing English communication skill So users will be able to take corrective measures and improve their communication skill And this study, researcher hope to contribute to the research treasure, clarify the subject as well as extend the view to the staff in An Nhien JSC 1.3 Aims of the study To find out the difficulties and recommend possible solutions to improve communication skill of the staff in An Nhien JSC Within the framework of a majority of the staff have errors of tense Besides, the proportion of people have errors relate to plural form accounts for 10 percent 20% of people have other errors such as verb form, preposition, Some other reason is that they often feel shy and anxious to communicate in English although they maybe understand grammatical structure clearly Hence, this effects badly on communicating correctly in grammar In conclusion, employees were not confident in their English communicating abilities and have some grammatical errors 25 Question 10 : What are the difficulties in practising English in your work environment? Not needing using English in professional work Communicate primarily with people who use Vietnamese Incorrect English communication of Vietnamese people Figure 3.9: The difficulties in pratising English in your work environment The chart also illustrates the reason related to work environment is Vietnamese people often speak in English incorrectly The majority of participants agree with this idea, 55 percent tick on this reason, this leads to a conclusion that they are meeting a lot of challenges to speak correctly Besides, 35% of the staff think that there are many people who speak in Vietnamese and 5% of the whole participants confirm that they not need to use English in the professional work 3.2 The results of the managers’ interview Question 1: What you think about the reality of English communiction skill of the staff at An Nhien JSC ? All of three managers said that the majority of the staff have been learning English for many years and had a quite good English foundation, which can help them to find out knowledge in the world so as to support to their work The English level of the staff is checked by a test when they applied a position in the company However, some of the staff have communicated fluently yet because they not have many opportunities to practise in real situation at the international workplace That is the reason why the staff have many difficulties in communicating in English, which affect badly on exchanging to foreign customers 26 Question 2: In your opinion, what are the main difficulty in communicating faced by your staff? Managers supposed that psychology factor is the main trouble of the staff when communicating with foreigners They always feel shy and anxious because of many reasons such as fearing of making mistakes, poor pronunciation or listening skill which make them not understand what foreigners say They are afraid of managers’ judgment and colleagues laugh, considered as the main obstacles that hinder most of the staff to exchange and express their ideas in the workplace Question 3: What are the activities that you organize to help your staff to develop their level in communicating English? According to the participants, the activities that develop their abilities in communicating English are having a special room for learning communicating where the staff reading such as short stories, novels, poems and other tools to enrich their vocabulary and knowledge as well as listening to native speakers and foreign channels for developing their accent and pronunciation Especially, managers will give a gift for the staff who are excellent in professional work and English each month The aim of this question was to encourage managers to organize different activities, not only relying on what they did but they need to create more activities to enhance quality of the staff 3.3 Main findings and discussion In this study, the findings from the questionnaire survey and interview delivered to both the staff and managers showed that when the staff communicating, they encountered many problems By carefully categorizing and summarizing, the author showed the main findings after analysis of data from the questionnaires and interviews 3.3.1 The reality of English communication skill of the An Nhien JSC’s staff Generally, opinions of the staff at An Nhien JSC about English communication skill are very important in the international workplace Moreover, it is clear from the above data analysis that the staff have plenty of difficulties in communicating English Most of them say that communicating English is difficult and quite difficult for them to communicate with foreigners, this often made them feel 27 discouraged in communicating process Although they have been learning English for a long time, most of knowledge they have learned is based on theory and little pratice They have a quite good foundation in grammar and they can read some knowledge in English but they cannot communicate with foreigners so it is difficult encourage managers to organize different activities, not only relying on what they did but they need to create more activities to enhance quality of the staff 3.3.2 The difficulties in communicating English of An Nhien JSC’s staff According to the survey, there was a consistent among data from managers’ interview, staff’s questionnaire The author could summarize and categorize into different groups of the difficulties in English communicating skill of them The results indicated that there were a variety of the difficulties faced by the staff at An Nhien JSC Firstly, majority staff said that the performance of staff was affected by linguistic factors: Pronunciation, Grammar and Vocabulary Pronunciation is the most difficulty for the majority of the staff Secondly, psychology is considered to be factor that had influence on performance of the staff It includes self-confidence, attitude, motivation to learn and anxiety which have much effect on the quality of communicating process They often thought that they needed to be enough confident to perform well The results from them questionnaire were quite similar to those of the teachers, most of they thought that their communicating performance was affected by emotion, especially self-confidence Confidence was considered to be a factor that had much influence on performance of the staff In addition, keeping good opinion helps them have motivation to continue and enhance their language speaking process in general and English communication skill in particular Thirdly, the results indicated that a majority of the managers said that the staff’ performance was affected by social factors or practicing environment They live in Vietnam so they not have much opportunities to talk with foreigners as well as practise English regularly Besides, the managers’ feedback during communicating activities also was also reported to affect on communicating because feedback or comments helped staff realize their mistakes or shortcomings and stimulate their spirit of communicating English 28 In brief, it can be said that the tour guides have difficulties in linguistic factors, psychology and social factors Although they encounter some difficulties, it is very important for the staff to enhance their capability 3.3.3 The solutions of the difficulties in speaking English of the staff After analyzing results from questionnaires and interviews, the researcher found some solutions which both the staff and the managers apply to improve the staff’s speaking skills For the staff, they knew and tried several ways to improve their speaking such as reading books to enrich vocabulary, watching movie or listening to music, even joining English club or talking indirectly with foreigner on social networks, forums, However, some people think that reading books to expand vocabulary is not interesting and effectively so there are a few staff using this method Besides, watching English films and listening to music seems be concerned with many staff because For the managers, they understand the difficulties faced by their staff, so they also organized many activities with aim to help the staff to have motivation and improve their English speaking skills 29 CHAPTER 4: RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS After finding out the difficulties in communicating English of staff at An Nhien Joint Stock Company, the researcher realized that those difficulties will have much negative effect on the quality of learning English Therefore, the researcher would like to give some recommendations and suggestion which may help the staff at AN Nhien in particular and staff at other company in general in improving their English communication skill 4.1 Limitations of the study Although the researcher has made great effort towards conducting this study, there undoubtedly exist some limitations First, I just study only 20 staff of An Nhien JSC, not entire staff of the company It would be difficult to determine whether the same results with larger number of samples Second, I’m only collecting one assessment of each staff, as a result, it would be impossible to affirm that these problems were outstanding Third, the study was conducted in the short time The study was conducted only more than months Thus, the result of the study might be less convincing and it could not cover all difficulties in commnicating English 4.2 Recommendations 4.2.1 Recommendations for the staff at An Nhien JSC 4.2.1.1 Pronunciation  Practice a bit, but regularly This is the true secret to successfully learning a foreign language: instead of dedicating hour on your pronunciation from time to time, plan regular lessons of no more than 15 minutes each, if possible, every day You’ll be making considerable progress  Learn to listen: Before you learn how to speak, you’ll need to learn how to listen Some sounds can be hard to tell apart when you’re listening Did the speaker sleep or slip? Did he hurt his chin or his shin? If you can hear the difference, it will be easier to speak the difference.There are many guides to get you started in learning to listen We have some great articles about learning to listen from movies, songs and music and podcasts.The pronunciation practice at many things is really slick, especially its huge selection of lessons on minimal pairs Minimal pairs are pairs words like 30 sleep and slip, that are only different by one sound You can click on each word to hear a complete sentence with each, then quiz yourself in the second box and click the correct answer  Copy the experts: There’s no replacement for learning pronunciation from the experts – native-speakers So listen! Listen to English radio programs and watch television and movies in English Imitate what you’re hearing – even if you’re not sure what they’re saying yet  Notice how your mouth and lips move: When you speak, you move your mouth How you move your mouth affects how you pronounce a word The first step to correcting your mouth shape is to notice it and pay attention There are a few ways you can check that your mouth and lips are making the correct shape: Use a mirror This is by far the simplest way to tell what your mouth is doing while you talk Put a finger in front of your lips (like you’re saying “shh”) As you speak, don’t move your finger You should feel your lips moving away from or pushing against your finger  Break words down into sounds: Words are made up of syllables, or parts The word “syllable,” for example, has three syllables: syl-la-ble Turning words into parts can make them easier to pronounce To check how many syllables a word has, place your hand flat just under your chin Say the word slowly Each time your chin touches your hand, that’s a syllable 4.2.1.2 Vocabulary  Read: The more you read - especially novels and literary works, but also magazines and newspapers - the more words you'll be exposed to As you read and uncover new words, use a combination of attempting to derive meaning from the context of the sentence as well as from looking up the definition in a dictionary  Use a journal It's a good idea to keep a running list of the new words you discover so that you can refer back to the list and slowly build them into your everyday vocabulary Plus, keeping a journal of all your new words can provide positive reinforcement for learning even more words - especially when you can see how many new words you've already learned  Play some games Word games that challenge you and help you discover new meanings and new words are a great and fun tool in your quest for expanding your vocabulary Examples include crossword puzzles, anagrams, word jumble…  Link vocabulary with mnemonics and word associations: Once you get a hang of the language, learning new words gets easier and easier as you can 31 associate new vocabulary with homonyms, roots and other components you know already 4.1.2.3 Grammar  Read: Reading may be the number one way you can improve your grammar skills When you read, you reinforce correct grammar in your mind It can be particularly helpful to read out loud, as the combination of seeing, saying, and hearing assists in solidifying what you have learned In addition to improving your grammar, reading will help with all aspects of your writing, from sentence fluency to increased vocabulary  Get a grammar manual: It is useful to have a thorough reference book nearby that you can consult when writing This way, any time a grammatical question arises, you can quickly refer to the manual to obtain the answer There are many high quality grammar and writing guidebooks on the market Speak to a librarian or writing instructor for recommendations  Practice: There are many excellent resources, both online and in print, conducive to improving your grammar skills A quick Internet search will reveal a multitude of websites that offer grammar games and exercises If you know that grammar is an area you struggle with, set aside a few minutes each day to complete grammar exercises Even the simple act of taking a few English practice tests of any level can help you improve your grammar skill  Write: Just as it helps to read a great deal, it will also benefit you to write more The more you practice writing with proper grammar, the more naturally it will come to you These are greats tips to help you with writing a college essay 4.2.1.4 Psychological factor In reality, there are several ways for the staff to remove feeling of shyness and anxiety when talking in English Firstly, they should take a deep breath before speaking to five themselves time to think and help themselves feel more confident Besides, speaking slower makes the staff sound more confident and trustworthy and will also have an impact on how they feel As well as making them feel more confident, it gives them a bit of time to think about what they are going to say next 4.2.1.5 Practicing environment The quickest way to learn English is to surround themselves with English speakers Also, get into the habit of thinking in English, the staff should not translate from Vietnamese into English, it will slow them down The staff can find places which there are many foreigners to talk with easy topics such as Sword lake, 32 Hanoi Old Quarter, or in An Nhien JSC, In addition, It is also good to watch TV shows, or movies in English As an exercise, it’s good to have something they can listen to over and over again For example, a DVD can be repeated whereas a news report can only be heard once When listening to something more than once;
